Thankyou for reminding me of this lovely hymn which I remember singing when as a family we attended the Elim Pentecostal church. I’m 90 now and so glad that I remember so many of these lovely hymns that you play. I enjoy new hymns as well., but find it more difficult to remember the words, but remembering the words of the old hymns gives me great joy. God bless.

I am now in my seventh decade and remember singing this in church as a child.
When I was thirty-two, with three small children, I was diagnosed with encephalitis. I spent weeks in the hospital. I suffered almost stroke-like disabilities from the swelling around my brain. I was so discouraged, even frightened, because I was not able to take care of my children or do even the simplest task. I thank God for my loving Mother.
I woke up late one night and the words to this beautiful song came to me. I slipped out of bed and knelt there, praying in my 'distress and grief'. This song is precious to me.

The bells on our Church organ would toll and then the choir would file in quietly and reverently and sing the first verse.
Those were the precious days when worship was real worship and our HYMNS full of priceless theological content.

The song was translated into Assyrian and as a child I remember it being sung in Assyrian Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Iran. Now, the traditional Assyrian/Armenian Protestant Church in Iran lays largely in ruins, whether physically or metaphorically, but despite the persecution, the underground church with hundreds of thousands of Moslem converts is going from strength to strength.

Prayer is something we should look forward to and enjoy! We should look forward to prayer, it should not be something we just do just because it's important, but something we desire and constantly long for and when we have the privilege to pray we dont want it to stop, it's only then we would be able to say "Sweet" Hour of prayer. Thanks for sharing. Blessed me greatly ❤

A hymn we used to sing in our church many years ago but back then people attended the hour of prayer held each week, they took it seriously! This modern age we are too taken up in a busy world to spend time singing about a sweet hour of prayer, sadly!

Thank you for these devotionals, Luke. I look forward to these every week, and get up early on Saturday mornings to spend time in prayer and meditate on your thoughts. I had to share this on Facebook this morning. Here are my thoughts:
“Sweet hour of prayer. Sweet hour of prayer. Of meditation.
I’m listening to this beautiful devotional thought as I putter in the pepper garden. I’ve refilled our eight bird feeders. The birds watch me with eagerness. This morning they didn’t wait for me to finish. The cat also watches me with eagerness.
The bluejays and finches and ring neck doves are excited. A woodpecker and her babies are watching, and they are about 10 feet away. They’ve learned to trust me. Which is fascinating.
And I’m puttering in the peppers. Lots of jalapeños and chilies and cowhorns to harvest this morning.
A soft cool rain is falling, and I take it all in and soak it all in while listening to this devotional.
Cooper left a bit ago. He gives Horn lessons to a young lady on Saturday mornings. He has embraced this as a ministry. Lisa is not feeling well, and is silent as she is still in bed.
I’m getting ready for a family reunion today. It’s my mom’s family. I’m so grateful for her memory, and for her family.
I have a very dear cousin that comes. She is a prayer partner, and I love her dearly.
The soft cool rain continues. The birds are flocking. The peppers are plentiful and beautiful.
And I am soaked in a sweet hour of prayer. “
