    Welcome back! It's good to see you again! The God of the Woods sounds like a good book! The Emma Straub book sounds good. I'll put that on my TBR list. Oh, and Get the Picture sounds great. I read Persuasion last December. So good. "Maybe I cry all the time and just don't realize it." lol. You're right. The world really is a crazy place right now. Trying to make the most of every moment is sound advice.

      Hi Lin! Yes, the Moore and the Straub are both great choices for the TBR. I'm hoping to pick up Persuasion soon. My friend I was supposed to buddy read Get the Picture with started it and didn't like it at all! Oops. I'm still planning to read it, though. I hope you are having a lovely summer so far!

    Hi! Welcome back! You needn’t apologize for being gone. I, too, disappeared from BookTube these past months. I went into teaching and it’s a lot. 😅
    God of the Woods was my first Liz Moore. I got it a netgalley advance and wow. That book is phenomenal. I keep thinking about all the ways she tied everything together. It’s so cohesive. I added all her backlist to my tbr.
    I’d love a video of all your dnfs. I’ve had so many this year. I get so frustrated when it happens, but it does!
    Hope to see another video soon.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Mandy, congratulations on the teaching! I hope you are enjoying it. It is a lot, but can be so rewarding. I'm glad you loved The God of The Woods! I finished it this morning and...well, you'll have to wait! I highly recommend her other works.
      I'm not sure about doing a DNF video, if only because DNFs can be so personal. Just because something didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't be a great read for someone else.
      I hope all is well with you!

    Evening Reader!!!!! I missed you. Glad to see your face here. Great answers and selection of books. I bought Collected Works when Shawn (now Shawn Breathes Books) was highly recommending it. I will have to prioritize it now that you gave it your high marks. I have several of the books you mentioned on my shelves so I am in for a good next half of the year. One of my favorite books this year was The Road to Dalton by Shannon Bowring and have pre ordered the sequel Where the Forest Meets the River . Loved Brooklyn too and look forward to Long Island. I did order Orbital for my brother's birthday as I am hearing about it everywhere and it seems like something he would like. I am reading The Guncle too, but it is wrecking me emotionally!!! oh of course one more thing... I read Heft by Liz Moore years ago and loved it. Not sure why I never picked up another one of her novels . I will have to give it a go!!! See you in the next one.

      Hi Marcia! Oh, I've got to get Road to Dalton. I've heard so many good things. The Guncle is even better than I expected. If you get a chance to try the audio, I highly recommend! Heft was my first Liz Moore....I can definitely recommend Unseen World and Long Bright River. Hoping for the best with the new one. Lovely to see you!

    I’m happy you enjoyed Collected Works. I did too, very much. I listened to the audiobook (in Swedish) and I like your description of the feeling after reading it. I agree with the feeling. I don’t agree on the feeling towards the ”floppy” books though. I like them!

    Good to see you back! Glad to hear you mention Collected Works - I started it a while ago, but I always read a bunch of books at the same time and it's such a chunker-oo that I keep picking up shorter books that I can finish up. I'm about 200 pages in - I really need to get back to it and prioritize it!
    I just loved Unseen World - I should get to some more Liz Moore - I even own two more of her books!

      I get that way with certain books, too, even when I'm enjoying them--and then the mood strikes, and I can't put them down! It also feels like a fall/winter read to me. And yes, you must definitely read more Liz Moore! I don't think you'll be disappointed!

    Thank you for not spoiling Straub, that’s certainly on my radar now. I just read _True Grit_ (and watched the Coen movie) and now I feel like checking out the audiobook.
    Brian at Bookish just talked about _Thundercap_ and now I’m waiting for it to show up.
    Good job on the tag! I’m glad you did it.

      David, I guess the description spoils the Straub, so don't read it. At first I wasn't sure about it, but she got it just right. At least in my opinion. It's a deep book that's deceptively light in some ways.
      Thunderclap is getting so much love. I'm looking forward to it in the fall, and maybe planning to take a field trip to Delft!

    Yay! You’re back! I wasn’t worried about you because from time to time you left comments on other channels that I watch so I knew you were okay.😀 As soon as I finish “Evenings and Weekends” by Oisin McKenna, I’ll read “The God of the Woods.” It will be my first Liz Moore. Colm Toibin’s “Long Island” is a great read. The best book I’ve read so far this year is a new release, “The Coast Road” by debut novelist Alan Murrin. Set in 1994, it’s about the lives of women in a small town in Ireland before the legalization of divorce.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi MJ! How are you liking Evenings and Weekends? I was scared off that one because the description said "for fans of Sally Rooney," and I am NOT a fan. I obviously can't say anything about The God of the Woods, but if that one doesn't work for you I do recommend giving her another try, especially Unseen World. I've put The Coast Road on the TBR!

    • @MJ-in-Canada
      @MJ-in-Canada 5 месяцев назад

      @@EveningReader So far, I’m enjoying “Evenings and Weekends” and not getting a Sally Rooney vibe. It’s gays and gals living life in London, and all the fun and frustrations of a hot summer in 2019. A word of caution about “The Coast Road.” It has quite an oppressive feel to it and may be a bit depressing although the storytelling is so good that I was willing to let myself be led down a trail of misery. It’s 1990s rural Ireland. What can you expect? 😆I hope for more books from this author.

    Great to see you back Priscilla. I;m so glad that you've been able to start getting into audio books, they really do open up a whole new aspect to books and reading. I started one yesterday, really got into it (it's an audiopage turner!) and gobbled up 4.5 hours, I'll finish it today or tomorrow....
    I hope you get back to Thunderclap and it doesn't get forgotten (I'm just saying that because that's what I would do...), it's wonderful. I listened to it on audio, but got a library copy out to look at the pictures. I loved it so much, was so absorbed into the 17th century Delft world, and also the author's modern memoir parts - she blends those seemlessly I thought. I listened to the last hour on a road trip. I cried at the death of this 17th century Dutch artist who I'd never heard of. Not full on sobbing, but my eyes definitely became waterlogged.
    It's funny you don't like the trade papaerback format. I love it, it's my favourite format! I buy too many books because of it (sure that's the only reason), because once the trade paperback is gone you get the puny mass market, and they're not nearly as nice!
    If you want to do a buddy read of Orbital with a somewhat unknown and random commenter then please let me know.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  5 месяцев назад +1

      Louise, I am having fun with the audio books! I get them as part of my Spotify, but my listening hours are limited. It's been great to dip my toe in. When I tried before (usually on neighborhood walks), my mind would wander, or I'd get distracted by traffic. But lately I go to the park and hit play and get absorbed!
      I will definitely get back to Thunderclap. I want to do a field trip to Delft and maybe film it? Sometime in the fall.
      I also prefer trade paperbacks, but not the big ones. The ones like I showed are the size of a hardback and they are cheaply constructed. I agree the mass market aren't great either!
      A buddy read of Orbital would be fun! Feel free to email me at eveningreaderreviews AT gmail, or DM me on Instagram or Goodreads, and we can coordinate.

      @@EveningReader Oh a field trip to Delft would be amazing, to be there after having read the book. She also talks about a museum in The Hague I think it is a lot, so I'd love to visit both, bit tricky from Australia... not so tricky from Amsterdam!
      On screen I couldn't tell the difference from the editions you had and and trade paperbacks! I did wonder about your passionate dislike for them.
      Orbital buddy read sounds fabulous. I'm so excited. I'll email you. I never notice DMs on goodreads, and am not good at insta.

    Nice to see you back-- always love your perspective and point of view! I had passed over This Time Tomorrow (the "surprise" IS revealed in the synopsis and is what gave me pause) but thanks to you, I will give it a try! Also downloaded and excited to read Still Pictures.

    • @EveningReader
      @EveningReader  5 месяцев назад

      Ah, here's the thing about This Time Tomorrow--I usually hate books that involve that kind of surprise because it always becomes so mechanical and explanations take over the plot. In this case the story remains front and center, and the explanations given are just so gentle and natural to what's being explored. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to pick it up! I think Still Pictures is bound to be good. I just love her writing.
