So very interesting to see the design details and how thought out they were, for example the extra 5 gallon jerry can under the dash. More simplicity, more functionality, no more and no less than needed. So clearly engineered with ideas in the mind first. German engineering . . . . Thanks so much for the around the vehicle tour of its mechanical features.
A few issues: Kubelwagens were not 4wd apart from a few prototypes...the Schwimmwagen and Kommanderwagen were both 4wd but the Kubel was primarily just a 2wd vehicle with reduction boxes like a microbus... That particular car has the incorrect exhaust and shifter from what I can see. The exhaust should have wrapped around the engine and exited to each respective side and the shifter should be straight and not curved.
There's even more, the right taillight comes from a Ford, the engine is from a 60's beetle, and yes, this guy hardly knows basic knowledge about these cars. It doesn't look like it has the original crashbox gearbox either. Somehow I think this is a replica.
I was wondering the same. But most likely, the Kubelwagen lacks the red lights to indicate braking, so that's what he's doing. Notice how he does is when stopping to put on the goggles, and then again when slowing down at a road intersection
Interesting and rare but he should have explained more on the engine-- My Father was in WW2 and drove a US Army truck and they also used headlight block outs
Sure, as well as many other technical stuff like aircrafts; especially high-tech ones like the jet fighter Me-262, the flying wing carbon-coated jet stealth fighter Horten H IX. Almost all technological achievements were taken to the US and Soviet Union by the Allied thieves and became their technological basis in the Cold War and beyond. This is victor's justice.
I saw a Zundapp motorcycle side car. It had a utility cart instead of the side car, and what I thought was a rather uncomfortable looking seat next to the wheel fender guard. Now I know that seat is actually a black out light to help change a flat tire.
Nah. The wermacht is the only army, obeying orders from your superiors in that case the government and lunatics of ss. And kubelwagen its a military vw beetle version. He don deserve all hate. Its a classic car and part of history. Most people will kill to have original surivor in your collection
@CyclopsZ the germany lost the war but wermacht army have gained respect from your rivals. The only evil is hitler government and the lunatics of ss. The army only follow orders from your superiors. Is not diferrent today. The soldier most reconize your patent
My grandmother and mother having lost their son and brother respectively, (who died fighting the Nazis in Cassino, Italy,) were from a generation that would never buy a German car .......
No. A prototype 4wd kubel was created but was not accepted nor mass produced. Kubels were 2wd. However. the 4wd concept lived on in the Type 166 Schwimmer.
Nice car! I was looking for a Typ 181, but they are really expensive now in Germany in good condition. I guess I will have to sell/trade in my BMW 3.0 CSI for one of these....
Chuck great ride along. Is there any way to get a hold of Dave? We are restoring an original 1943 Kubelwagen and we do not have the framework for the canvas top. Looking for detailed pictures so we can reproduce it.
Did you find top bows? If not I have some nice European reproduction ones that came from the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie (long story) I would sell if you still need them.
holy smokes! I cannot beleive you found a kubelwagen! Is this guy who owns it a millionare? ive seen these sell for in much worse condition for half a million.
kubelwagens went into poland in 1939 with the blitzdrieg. how come they say kubels are only 1940-45. the first kubels were 1939. what going into poland taught them was that the kubel had to be geared down so as to be able to go a constant 2.5mph, when they were with troops marching. now correct that to 1939 to 1945 , kubelwagen, the first porsche mass produced vehicle.
This "specimen": being mostly with false componets and almost wrong restauratione: it would absolutely not seriously accepted as a true original WW2/"VW"-Typ82, in Europe.
one of the best 1/12 VW82/87 Kubel wagen display quality with RC running gear, almost like real. 1/12 RocHobby RC model VW82 Kubelwagen with 1/1 real 1943 Kubelwagen - RUclips
...also many others details....my own Typ82 is restare with 85% originals "KZ" bolts, antiairkraft rear support (one car, of a lot of faktory-built for that purpose) It did cost like a fast/good AlfaRomeo, but makes one "living history"
Old French Lady: "Oh lord, the Germans! They're back!"
Notice France wasn't destroyed under Germany? It is now. What happened?
Always liked the Kubelwagen. Would love to see a modern rendition.
There are some manufactured in the USA with a very strong engine. Just google! Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🏔⛷🍺🥨🛶😎👍🐺 Europe!
I so much agree. They should make a modern version like jeep and hummer are doing! 🚗🏔
We briefly had one in the 70s. It was called “The Thing” in America. Funny enough, it was more simple than “The Beetle”, but costed more.
this car will turn more heads than any super car
@Jack the Gestapo in Israel
I'm gonna get a licence plate for mine soon, I can't wait to see people's reactions!
@@MistahFox drive this in germany
GERMAN ENGINEERING- Anyone notice the push-start feature, and they had that in 1943!!! I had a 2009 Cadillac CTS and it still had key-start!!!
My dream car
Beautiful piece of machinery, nice split window as well.👍

Thanks for this posting,i am a big Kubelwagen fan.
These vehicles are very cool. thanks for posting this.
0:25 - I know he probably had warmed it up, but it starts so nicely for 6 volts.
My 6 volt Willys started easily even when it was cold.
Thanks for sharing this video
I've long wanted one.
It is a great car , with some nice history.
It was hard to resist buying the retro kubelwagen when I seen the new one on the VW dealer's lot Nice to see the details on that old survivor.
Thanks for sharing this with us again Chuck, it was the first Original Wheels video of yours that I saw and got me hooked on your videos.
Thanks for this. I just bought a later model but I wanted a military perspective on the restoration. I specially like the simplicity of the cam job.
Thanks for this from Ireland, you're the best Chuck...............

Kubels were 2wd yes, but with a limited- slip differential which was far superior to a regular 2- wheel drive.
I love this car , question did he do a hand signal to turn right or a General Rommel imitation ?
I was wondering the same.
But most likely, the Kubelwagen lacks the red lights to indicate braking, so that's what he's doing.

Thanks for this, I really appreciate it!
amazing vehicle
Beautiful, the beauty of simplicity
I seem to remember seeing many of these wrecked in war movies.
Awesome I would love to have one in a collection some day
Thanks for sharing this post :-)
Excellent video!
Thanks for the reply. I like the split rear window VW in the background at the start of the video.
Bucket of bolts, Awsome! Thanks Chuck!
Lovely!

Dude! This is what I wanted to see!
I saw a Zundapp motorcycle side car. It had a utility cart instead of the side car, and what I thought was a rather uncomfortable looking seat next to the wheel fender guard. Now I know that seat is actually a black out light to help change a flat tire.
i would love to have one of these, but restored examples dont seem do be as popular as the willys MB's. i guess for obvious reasons.

Sweet....
I WANT A KÜBELWAGEN!!!
Aww,, Blushing
My first thought was yes windshield down full wind in the “Hair”. Or scalp in this case.
My grandmother and mother having lost their son and brother respectively, (who died fighting the Nazis in Cassino, Italy,) were from a generation that would never buy a German car .......
Always plenty of other cars to choose from.
You are very welcome, sir.
i see a lot of strange things on this kubel -doors -dash - tires - what is this ? bits and pieces welded together ?
I wonder if this guys knows the history of the vehicle? I find that the most interesting stuff about old vehicles. Thanks
Yep!
I read that Kubelwagens were only 4wd when in 1st gear, is this correct?
No. A prototype 4wd kubel was created but was not accepted nor mass produced. Kubels were 2wd. However. the 4wd concept lived on in the Type 166 Schwimmer.
Is there a video on the very early split window? Looks like its from the days of KDF!
Good question, I don't know.
Nice car! I was looking for a Typ 181, but they are really expensive now in Germany in good condition. I guess I will have to sell/trade in my BMW 3.0 CSI for one of these....
Very interesting. Shall we assume that it was imported from Germany in the not too distant past?
So happy this was not my gearbox or what's left of it
you still can get these cars I've seen them in the USA as runabouts
Beautiful specimen; would be nice to find the original style exhaust system.
That would be cool!
It shares similarities with the Kettenkrad.
Nice vehicle. Is that where the idea for the VW "THING" came from? :)
subiera escondido las fusibleras que les puso en el tablero para conservar el estado original
Pulled up the choke during driving? All the time?
Chuck great ride along. Is there any way to get a hold of Dave? We are restoring an original 1943 Kubelwagen and we do not have the framework for the canvas top. Looking for detailed pictures so we can reproduce it.
This was shot many years ago. I have lost track of Dave and the Kubelwagen. Sorry.
RideswithChuck thanks for letting me know. On with the search.
Did you find top bows? If not I have some nice European reproduction ones that came from the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie (long story) I would sell if you still need them.
I can see the similarities between the Kubelwagen abd the Volkswagen Thing.
I want a Brabus 300 Kubelwagen with a automatic transmission
I'll soon buy the replica just to annoy the crap out of my french neighbors
The split is definately a fake... Looks like it's a fake kübel too...
Bucket of bolts....metric of course!!
holy smokes! I cannot beleive you found a kubelwagen! Is this guy who owns it a millionare? ive seen these sell for in much worse condition for half a million.
Como é que é a caixa? (How is the gearbox?)
A mesma do vw fusca. É o mesmo projeto. Kubelwagen é a versao militar do besouro
An original first aide kit? If that's all that was inside then DAMN those German soldiers were seriously tough! LOL
VW should make the Kubelwagen again.
Where is the fan noise? Original ones had a very noisy cooling fan, almost like a siren
You are probably hearing the gears of the reduction gear box and transaxle. You can hear the whine when he goes into reverse.
kubelwagens went into poland in 1939 with the blitzdrieg. how come they say kubels are only 1940-45. the first kubels were 1939. what going into poland taught them was that the kubel had to be geared down so as to be able to go a constant 2.5mph, when they were with troops marching. now correct that to 1939 to 1945 , kubelwagen, the first porsche mass produced vehicle.
The "kubels" that went to Poland were Type 62s. Kubels are Type 82. So, technically, a different make.

DER KÜBELWAGEN SPRENGEN!
This "specimen": being mostly with false componets and almost wrong restauratione: it would absolutely not seriously accepted as a true original WW2/"VW"-Typ82, in Europe.
Oh so it doesn’t have a front trunk like most vw beetles. 😜
Nope.
And the more I look at that Kubel the less I'm convinced......
this was 1940... wow
That split window beetle looks like a fake.
Rip für jeden Kübelwagen der in den Griffeln von nem ami landet.
schnitzel. i would like a dkw munga anyway.
i like the schwimmwagen better but thats becouse its amfibious

...BAD-TO-THE-BONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks to be the wrong engine looks to be a 36hp 😡 ...it needs it's 25hp engine ....nice car but wrong engine so it gets a 👉👍 and 👉👎
...also many others details....my own Typ82 is restare with 85% originals "KZ" bolts, antiairkraft rear support (one car, of a lot of faktory-built for that purpose)
It did cost like a fast/good AlfaRomeo, but makes one "living history"
A 28hp engine would also be appropriate for late '43. Sadly, original engines are hard to come by.
Sure looks like a VW thing.....
They are similar but are completely different vehicles. They share no common parts.
*me seeng my favorit car kubelwage

Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
