Fifty years of history wiped out in a few seconds.

I'm glad they didn't demalish all of them. 3 of them are staying up. For possible reuse with a new CCGT station. That seems a bit unlikely, but I like the idea of keeping some of the old in with the new. Plus the original turbine hall of the A station from the 1920s still stands. I know to most people they are just huge machines that keep the lights on, but to the local people they do represent a local history and a way of life.

The twin chimneys and adjacent boiler hall are going on the 24th August. Four towers at Eggborough went this morning.

@@al66class59 Really!? I had been trying to find out for months about what they were planning to do at Eggborough but could find literally nothing!
Persumably they don't publicise it to avoid large crowds gathering nearby (?)

@@soundseeker63 Yep, really. I was told about it a week before the event, and upon going to take photos of the towers before they were blown up, the only indication anything was happening on the site was 'major planned construction works' signs, on the road passing the cooling towers and the A-road going past the plant's main entrance, indicating that they were going to be closed all day on the 1st August.
There were also black bags wrapped around the legs of the cooling towers (to contain the explosives). The indication given on the 31st (the day before) was that it'd likely be an 11am demolition, but they blew them up three hours earlier, just after 8am.
All of the publicity (or lack thereof) was indeed to reduce crowds. The exclusion zone was heavily guarded, although given how close one road is to the towers, that makes sense.
I think Ferrybridge's boiler hall and twin chimneys will go down in the same fashion, when their day comes at the end of the month. They're apparently due to go on the 22nd (as opposed to the 24th as stated earlier).

Now, I could understand the BBC reporting the collapse of these towers 20 minutes before the did actually collapse. Unlike as with World Trade Center Building 7 on the day of 9/11. A 47 floor steel framed building that also fell at free fall speed in a completely symmetrical fashion.

Well that's weird , how could that 7 have fallen like that then without help from explosive Tech's?....or Thermite..?

@@s4dreamland671 I couldn't. The collapse of WTB7 was a clear case of controlled demolition. A job carried out by professionals using various types of high explosives.

@@NowisEvollovetion So , what your saying is you believe the main support beams were burned on an angle using for example thermite to cause the complete shift of the main structure . And precise column splicing to have it come down straight ?? What the hell?. So , would you say the all mighty dollar and a excuse to invade Iraq for oil purposes had something to do with it and collateral damage was huge and inevitable ? In your opinion , would you say the death of Saddam Hussein eliminated the one person that kept the middle East in check?

These boilers manufactured by Babcock & Wilcox, could have lasted another 50 years with some modifications, and the burners changed to burn LNG, I worked in the design office in the London head office on this plant plus many others, some of technology today is dated, but now we face a crisis, where many base load stations like Ferry bridge have been demolished,, Our country has run out of options currently due to the stupidity of ministers in various governments not understanding the logic of having this type of power plant , I do not know of a single windmill that can produce 2000 megawatts of power. let alone 8000 megawatts that this station produced,
