Javier Camarena Tenor
Ángel Rodríguez Piano
Rosenblatt Recitals, Wigmore Hall, London 14.04.2016
Javier Camarena returns to the series having made his sensational debut last season. Hailed as “one of the most exciting tenors singing today” (Huffington Post), he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2011 and became the third singer in modern times to give a rare encore at the Met - preceded only by Luciano Pavarotti and Juan Diego Flórez - after stepping in for Flórez in La cenerentola in 2014.
“Javier Camarena had a triumphant evening, singing with a hearty, burnished tone... He’s a singer capable of gladiatorial power but also subtle shadings, supple phrasing and a thoroughly convincing Italian flavor.”
New York Times
“In Javier Camarena, it was clear the company had a new star, a rival to fellow tenors Juan Diego Flórez and Lawrence Brownlee for the title of 'King of the High C's.’ Mr. Camarena's voice combines the flexibility and high range usually associated with the 'tenore di grazia' type with an unusual depth and richness of timbre.”

He actually enjoyed singing that piece which most tenors are just praying to get through it. Outstanding job!!!
I heard him singing this at the Met today. He not only nailed the top "C"s but did so with astonishing power. He was terrific - and his acting was very good as well.
Just heard his Met brdcst. of Lucia today, he was excellent, I'd love to see him in house.
Bravo maestro!! y cómo no, Viva México!!
Bravo Javier Camarena, genial intérprete. Gracias.
¡¡¡Qué placer oir a este maravilloso tenor!!!!
Quality!!! Soft voice which is nice. Bravo!
Yes, its the right voice for that song. A lot of other very fine tenors (say Domingo or Pavarotti) just don't sound sufficiently young and effortless for it - it takes suppleness rather than power (except perhaps for that final high C).
Bravo
Orgullo Mexicano... BRAVO¡¡¡¡
Very good indeed a beautiful lyric tenor with a gorgeous sheen to his sound glorious last C to boot bravo 👏
Bravissimo!!!!
Mah...a me non piace moltissimo
Not just good top notes but commanding top notes
Brilliant voice!
Meraviglioso.

It used to be that no one sang this or if they did they transposed it down. Sutherland and Boynge asked Pavarotti if he wanted to sing it transposed like everyone else but he said he would try it as written. The rest is history.
But there are some famous excellent tenors who have bigger richer, warmer voice who sing it but shouldn't. This guy Camarena sounds great because he has the right kind of voice for this part. But even so that wasn't the vocal production Donizetti expected. Remember the High C from the chest was first heard in Lucia when Duprez sang full voice up to the top and created a sensation. Prior to that tenors sang the top notes in falsetto.
Most big name tenors never sing a High C on stage. Domingo, Vickers, King and many others simply didn't have a C. On the other hand I talked once to a tenor in the chorus of a Traviata I was in who claimed he could sing a G above High C. He probably could, but you couldn't hear him a foot away. Most of the really high voices are small voices. Camerena sounds like his voice would carry in a big hall because it's so pure.
Caruso changed what people expected a tenor to sound like. So did Pavarotti.
''Most big name tenorss never sing a High C on stage''. I don't know hoy many is ''most'', but there were some big tenors who certainly did: Di Stefano, Corellil, Pavarotti, Lauri-Volpi, Bjorling, Lanza, Gigli, Gedda, Kraus, Tucker, Aragall, Kunde, Araizal... Should I keep going?
Braaaaavoo the great Tenor caviet camerana
Gran trabajo juntos
Thank,you so very good 🤗
the finest lyric tenor singing today
Leggiero tenor perhaps?
Diego-Florez is better.
Just a gorgeous performance in every way.
Magnifique !
Excellent!!!
Genial!!
Bravo!
…….y el pianista, espectacular también
Simply awesome
That pianist is really good.
Bravissimi!!!!!
wow!
Mil likes!! Camarena
Me encanta!!!
Outstanding
MARAVILLOSO.
Grande padronanza della voce (e grande simpatia umana)
maravilloso.
though many have tried no one comes close to Pavarotti so much daylight until the next one.
Maravillosa voz.
Bella interpretazione. E non intendo solo gli acuti.
Incanta ☺
This aria belongs to Camarena, Florez and Brownlee!
And one day Jonathan Antoine all being well.
21 secolo - il secolo dei tenori tipo - zanzara ...
El atrevimiento vale
Obviously very good but something about his sound is not as sweet as I would love from a light lyric tenor. Just personal preference, with that said would definitely pay to see this man
Well done. Not close to Pavarotti though. He is still the undisputed master of this area.
Born in Xalapa in Mexico’s State of Veracruz, Javier Camarena studied with mezzo-soprano Cecilia Perfecto at the Universidad Veracruzana before completing his musical studies with honors under Hugo Barreiro and Maria Eugenia Sutti at the University of Guanajuato. In 2004, he took first prize in Mexico’s Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition, and the following year he won the Juan Oncinas Award at Barcelona’s Francisco Viñas Competition, after which he was invited to join Zurich’s International Opera Studio under the mentorship of fellow tenor Francisco Araiza. From 2013 to 2016, Lideres Mexicanos included Camarena in their list of Mexico’s most prominent leaders, and in the 2014-15 season, Quién magazine named him as one of 50 leaders transforming the nation.
Unfortunately hes so homley
Pavarotti didn't do it any better!
Donizetti should not have written this note, it never sounds good!
Bravo!!!
