Famous debate moment: Bush, Sr. checks his watch in 1992

- In a town hall-style presidential debate in Richmond, Va., in 1992, then-President George H.W. Bush infamously checked his watch during a question from the audience, then stumbled through his answer.
I missed the times when debates were more civil and about actual issues instead of throwing insults at each other.
R.I.P. the good old days! (L.O.L.!)
😅 shut up
What are you talking about? The 1812 election was vicious, and of course was about personal insults. So was the election of 1876. So was the election of 1920. So was the election of 1968. So was the election of 1988.
This is not a new thing in politics or society. People have always been vicious, and mean in politics. Grow up.
Pretty tame compared to his son being wired for sound during his first debate with Gore
Thank Trump for that.
It was an Apple Watch for crying out loud. It notified him that it was time to stand up.
Katnip79 those damn Apple watches bro
Thank you for making me laugh. 😂
Joe’s gotta get one

how does the National Debt make someone miss a mortgage payment wtf
Exactly. Such a preposterous question.
@@cmbsoldja- the national debt actually sets the interest payments on loans and everything else financially, alot of ppl dont realise if the creditors force a raise in the debt interest by just 2% were all in trouble
Liberal logic Brandon, that’s how
@@jtm12180 Remember, the Stock Market always does much better with a Democrat as POTUS and that is a FACT!

The question itself was nonsensical.
Its premise was silly
Nowadays They will completely ignore the question, double down on whatever they’re going on about, then, if we’re lucky, quickly get mumbled answer with an irritated facial expression.
No it wasn't. She didn't mean "national debt" literally. She was taking about the recession the country was going in at the time. Perot and Bush the Elder took the question literally. Clinton did not. Clinton understood what she was talking about.
@james trout, it was explained by the moderator before clintons turn and clinton had a long time to sit and figure it our whereas bush and perot were blindsided by the ladys stupidity , it was one of the dumbest questions ever asked in one of these debates
If you aren't sick how can you be a doctor? Haha
I don't think him looking at his watch is a big deal. He answered the question and even tried to better understand what was meant rather than just avoid it.
I wasn’t around back then, but I think what many people felt was that he was taking these debates for granted and he saw them as a “chore” he had to do to get four more years in the White House
He wasnt listening
This was where he lost the election. Kind of like the death penalty question Dukakis got in 1988z
@@josephmackela8466 I thought it when he broke his tax pledge.
He never answered the question, what do you mean? She asked how it affected him personally and he went on a tangent about mortgage payments and not giving his experience
The question was almost like an unintentional trick question. The national debt is what the country collectively owes the federal reserve for issuing our money. To ask him how it's affected him PERSONALLY is a misnomer since the issue is a collective, not individual issue. That's why he seemed puzzled by the question and he said. "It affects everybody"
No, it was a simple question. He got defensive and played dumb because he didn't want to admit that it hasn't affected him.
@@StandTallTx it was NOT a simple question - find me one American who actually cares about the national debt. If people cared about the national debt it wouldn't be $30 trillion and growing.
I agree Bush flubbed his response to this question, but I would bet any amount of money this woman was planted and told to ask this question (and I didn't even like George H.W. Bush or his son).
The question doesn't make sense because the national debt doesn't affect anyone single person. How long have we been in debt and none of us have really felt it at the end, it's the government that owes the money, not necessarily the people that's why it doesn't necessarily affect us. More specifically, she doesn't know how to ask a question I think the question that she was supposed to ask was how was the recession affected him directly and how will he hope to understand the struggles of ordinary Americans? That's the question, she should be asking not how the national debt has affected us. That's a trick question and there's no way that he can answer it.
@@Algore-rk8mh it was a gotcha question, she was planted
I’m a diehard Democrat, but this was an extremely biased question. The question was posed as a slam dunk to Clinton. Of course he could speak to the national debt better because he wasn’t the one dealing with it. Bush didn’t do himself any favors, don’t get me wrong. Looking at the watch and appearing apathetic certainly hurt him. However Clinton gave a classic non answer but his charm and charisma really was what was on display. Bush had no shot.
Of course it's biased, by design. The media has done it for a generation. Why do you think Trump won? Duh
Dan Shelton
The Media certainly didn’t help trump, at least not by design. They were and still remain obsessed by him so they can’t stop talking about him.

I love how Bush draws an outline of what a bulletin looks like. Classic.
The first politician to use his hands wildly before Trump started doing it in a dumb way 😆
Politics is nothing more than having a clever answer to a serious question when the spotlight is on you.
Especially now. Soundbites. Hot takes.
Correct
As President though, it is your job to have good answers ready too. That is part of the job. Talking to foreign leaders would be much harder than talking to a prospective voter.
Good explanation!
People dressed better and behaved more civilly back then.
*Civil -- civilly is not a word
Well you dress nicely to these events but go off
yeah right crime was at it's highest during those times.
gothatway09 You mean like Ken Bone?
No, they only pretended to do so, much like they do now. You ever watch an old corny tv show and thought to yourself 'who would watch and relate to that corny crap'? Well, they're asleep much the same way people are today, but in varying degrees. People today think they're cool, in touch and "woke" to what's actually going on around them, but they're just characters in the thick of an illusion too. 30 years from now, people will look back on the old recordings, news, reality shows and other events that were current at the time, and say "wtf is wrong with these people". Very very few people have ever actually been awake at any given time in the history of humanity. To those who are, it always looks like a phony lunatic asylum, because in reality, it is.
Such a weird question. The National Debt?
Even when the correspondent correct and told Prez Bush that she meant recession. And he started talking about Teenage pregnancy and visiting a black church 🙄
@@featuredview6546HW Bush's mind: "She's black, mention black churches and teenage pregnancies" 😂 dude was so out of touch with real ppl.

If you aren't poor than how could you help poor people? If you aren't fat how can you help fat people. If you're not sick how can you be a doctor? Haha dumb question.
Yup. It was a stupid question. How can a female president be a president for men without knowing what it's like to be a man?
How can a male president be a president for women without knowing what it's like to be a woman?
Absolutely idiotic question.

This was the last time the media allowed the audience to write their own questions
@M L Wrong, 2016 debates had them.

"I don't think it's fair to say, 'You haven't had cancer, therefore you don't know what it's like.'"
He cut himself off but I think he was saying that it'd be crazy to say that if you've never had cancer then you don't know what it's like and therefore you can't do anything about it. If that's right then we need to fire a lot of oncologists, and we need to send our cancer survivors to medical school!
Sadly, Bush never tried to identify with or understand that she wasn't asking about cancer. She was asking Bush if he could understand or appreciate someone's hardship during the current Recession and who had the ability to make hardships better for Americans overall. Bush, instead, kept looking at his watch and acted unsympathetic, as he typically was during his administration. Only after he was voted out, did Bush begin understand other people's hardships in the ways he should have beforehand.
@Dustin Stich Oh yes she was and Clinton helped her clarify her point even further after Bush responded. Clinton clarified her response quite clearly in terms that put Bush back on his heels and was a major spur to Bush losing to Clinton.
@Dustin Stich Try listening to the WHOLE conversation... the MODERATOR was helping her to clarify that she meant the Recession and that is what Clinton came back on Bush with.
@Dustin Stich Not if the National Debt goes too high and the debt to GDP ratio is negatively affected. Our bonds would potentially receive a lower S&P rating, as a result, which is never good.
just look at her face at "how has it affected YOU personally" very confrontational
He didn’t stumble through his answer at all. The question was misguided.
He didn't answer the question either. Just goin semantic.
@@Neat_profile He was allowed to get semantic, especially after the moderator jumped in and gave this woman's question a bit more definition.
@@Neat_profileHe didn't answer the question because the only answer is that it doesn't. The national debt especially in 1991 didn't really effect anyone in a negative way
Did Joe Biden looking at his watch brought you here?
Biden only looked at his watch after being told they were near the end of the debate.
No.
That was a smart way of turning it around on her. When he said "Are you suggesting that if a person has means the national debt doesn't effect them". That was actually a smart thing to say and a slick thing. The intent was to make her feel brainless for asking such a broad question. But it didn't work. Typical politician move.
Antoine Mclean because that was brainless lol. Obviously Clinton’s approach was great but can’t fault people for having a difficult time understanding stupid.
Uh no? A typical politician tries doesn't try to make people asking questions feel dumb. That's terrible PR.

Be glad you guys don't run for office.
You ppl on the internet look way too deep into things. He was genuinely confused on the question amd was wanting her to clarify the question. It didn't make sense, the national debt has nothing to do with mortgage payments lol.
This was a loaded question
This "looking at his watch" episode did really hurt Bush. It seemed that he wanted to get this debate over with. Like his heart wasn't in it. It said a whole bunch of things about George H. Bush. None of it was good.
Purposely gave this to his partner in crime WJC.. Succession plan agreed on by new world order...
My theory was he was burnt out with being in the white house. He did 8 years as VP and then another 4 as president, I think politics takes a toll on people. At some point, I think even the most power hungry people want a normal life.

These were some real presidents. Now we have orange man and sleepy joe.
I remember watching this debate on TV and I remember this question. Now, being 30 years older and a lot wiser, I'm convinced this question was planted. And I'm able to pick up on a few cues that I didn't notice at the time.
For one thing, when she asks _"How can you honestly..."_ (the key word being "honestly"), that's a CLEAR sign of bias on her part. It turns a question into a statement. And when Bush started to answer, she smirked (a sign of annoyance) and she interrupted him not once, but twice.
As I recall, when Clinton gave his answer (not in this clip), she nodded as he was talking. She didn't interrupt him or make any sort of faces.
For the record, I never liked Bush 41 and I was a Clinton supporter.
I also believe it was a plant. At the time, this moment was the gotcha moment of the campaign, and the woman was viewed sympathetically bc she’s a black woman with a speech impediment asking an uninformed question. The fact that the Democrats had been out of power for 12 years also gave her cover, but when I watch, and she goes, “How?” to the POTUS, I’m forced to conclude she was a party plant. Finally, I was a 12 year old Bush supporter when this happened, but have since come around to supporting the Clintons.
Couldn't they have picked someone without such a distracting lisp?
Who else is here after Biden does the same 2020
And he still won. ;P
Interesting how in 1992 Bush Senior and Clinton are 22 years apart compared to Trump and Biden as only 4 in 2020.
He was 68 then. He looks so different at 92.

I'm not one to defend politicians, but that's like asking your doctor if you haven't had cancer, how can you help a patient with cancer?
Terrible question, but his demeanor in his response came across very disconnected.
I watched this debate several times before and never even noticed him checking his watch until it was brought up in other videos.
1. Checking your watch is no big deal
2. That was a stupid question
No matter what answer he gave that woman, you can tell she was going to vote for Bill Clinton.
The national debit clearly didn’t affect him.
This is actually a ridiculous question. It’s clear that this lady has no idea what the national debt actually is. You’d think that they’d vet these people before they put them in front of a microphone at a POTUS debate. No wonder Bush was like…wtf are you talking about?
She tried to embarrassed bush with a gotcha question but I think he throw the ball back at her with “just because I haven’t have cancer doesn’t mean I’m not affected”
Nothing has changed in last 30 years as far as: what our government can do for us versus what we can do for ourselves we have gone from two recessions and now the pandemic and non of that had affected me in any shape or form in my life because I’m the one in control of my house car payment etcetera what she pointed out,
What has affected me is when I get fired from a job and gone 3 to 4 months without a job or i get injured at work and not able to work for 5 months yes had affected my house and car payment, is my government responsible for that?
So many Americans live under the ilusión that somehow the government is responsible for them to succeed in life that’s why immigrants come over and take those jobs and flourish right in front of our eyes and they deserve it.
Whereas people like the black lady asking the question sit around waiting for somehow magic to happen and transform theirs life’s and if it ain’t happen they’ll blame it on the government.
To me regardless who the president is or what my politics are, whether is a republican or democrat the tools for me to succeed are out there for grabs
Bush looked at his watch because he knew time was running out on him
@Caleb Conn Especially since the orange POS Traitor was last voted into office!
When did he even look at it? I didn't even see it edit: oh, right at the start - before the question even came up! wtf...
Ruthless Hack You’re an idiot.
Howard Stern do you mean his time in office was running out?
No. That look is "how much longer?". He felt that it was a waste of time.
Ha, ha, I like his comparison about not having cancer to help and have empathy for cancer patients.
What the fuck is up with America's obsession with sacrifice and coming up from nothing? Expecting a presidential candidate to not be able to pay their mortgage and face the struggles of working 9 to 5 for shit pay is incredibly unreasonable, since they are running for goddamn president.
A good president has to be able to empathize with the struggles of the average joe, but he doesn't have to BE one to understand where they're coming from.
"Hmm.. I wonder what time it is" -Did he just looked his watch!?!
Yea stupid question. Because How does national debt affect anyone making them miss mortgage payment?
None of the issues she mentioned have anything to do with national debt.
This was one of the dumbest questions I've ever heard. Someone with so much knowledge and experience like Bush tried to make sense of the question on an intelligent level, but Clinton understood that the lady just wanted an emotional connection.
What a strange question. National debt is an issue that affects everybody, but is not something you can just point to an economic issue with and say that it was solely caused by national debt like you can with a recession or with inflation.
Time stamp when he looked at his watch?
What a ridiculous question
C”mon...afoordable tuition for his grandchildren? I don’t think Bush’s grandchildren had to cough up college tuition.

He wanted to see the time and go sleep
Not the best worded question in a Presidential debate, but Bush 41 did a terrible job answering a question that it seemed he was the only one having trouble coming up with an answer (compared to how quickly Clinton and Perot answered it)
What do you expect? The question was way more strange than you might think
It makes it less of a question and more of a statement. And when Bush started to answer, she smirked (a sign of annoyance) and she interrupted him twice.
As I recall, when Clinton gave his answer (not in this clip), she nodded as he was talking. She didn't interrupt him or make any sort of faces.
Bush never had to pay a bill. He never had to
Worry about real
Issues.
You have proof of that?
Checking to see how much time left on his presidency.
The question, in itself, was stupid.
It would have been a simple answer, even from a Republican standpoint: something like "The national debt has not affected me on a personal basis, but when people lose their jobs due to the national debt, our economy suffers, which hurts everybody from the lower class to the wealthy." Not that hard buddy. No real bias there and probably would've gained you a few thousand votes. That's why he didn't win in '92: he couldn't speak to what people were feeling, which is something (even though I politically and socially despise this guy) Trump did to win in 2016.
It was a poorly phrased question!!! Bush was probably dumbfounded how stupid this lady was!!!
And he lost in large part because Perot took a lot of his votes and voter fatigue (the R's had 12 years in the White House)!!!
Hey Mike Tyson, your long lost sister is in this video! (L.M.A.O.!)
freakyfornash YES, she attributes her financial issues to the debt which is folly, but who can trust a Tyson to money?
+Collin Pruett Wasn't Bush's fault this woman/"Tyson's sister" couldn't even ask her own question properly (when she said national debt instead of recession), which didn't help him be able to know how to answer it at first. I swear the Clinton campaign must have used her as a plant too, in order to make Bush look bad this night.
Hey David Duke!! Your brother-father-uncle-grandpa is on youtube commenting!! He's goin by freakyfornash. Guess he still likes it when sister-grandma-wife uses them dentures on his corn cob
Just saying it wasn't Bush's fault that idiot woman couldn't even ask her own question right. That, not the issue was what threw him off more than anything, while Clinton knew exactly, and was better prepared for an answer. That with knowing what she was talking about by going last too.
Say what you want about Tyson, but at least he knew what it was like to be rich, and on top of the world with a huge fanbase by his side (who continues to stand up for him to this day, no matter what), while being able to get whatever pretty women he wanted back then pretty much! That of which is something the average Joe will obviously never have, and would give anything to experience, even if it was just for a short while as was the case with him though.
In fairness the question wasn’t articulated correctly for what she was trying to ask but Clinton was able to understand what she was really asking and nailed it.
I still dont get how Bush glancing at his watch at 00:02 is a big deal here !!
PS : I am not American.
How he answered the question showed he was out of touch with the struggles people were facing
He's so unfamiliar with how 99% of Americans live and get by, he couldnt even understand the simple question. Then when he got flummoxed, he turned it around on her w "do you mean to say that person of means isnt affected by the national debt?", thus proving the very point unwittingly.
The question was not phrased well at all, but yeah Bush's answer (and especially his condescending attitude) was bad.
The question was not phrased correctly, as national debt has no correlation to an individual's debts in the way she is suggesting. Therefore it is understandable how Bush would react in such a manner.
It's because it was such a dumb question. She's implying two things: 1. That if you aren't affected by something then you can't fix it. 2. The national debt is like some kind of poor person tax.
She doesn't understand the first thing about economics and he does. So he is stumped by it. He shouldn't have been if he was a better communicator.
@@James-cb7nb That's another way of phrasing it, but yes you're right.
The question made no sense. The person asking started prattling on about the national debt when it had nothing to do with what she was asking.
Doesn’t make sense to me why she was able to go back and forth with him like that.
He was probably checking the ⌚ to see what time the carlisle group was going to meet...

I dont understand why people say it was a nonsensical question. For me its brilliant to ask something so unexpected and its so hard to ask something about maybe you cantd identify. Helloooo they have money! You know whats is cancer and you know you will suffer if you or somebody has it but you didnt live it. Its gonna never be the same so that capacity to be "empathetic" is priceless. Bush Sr, was such a clueless President, as he shows himself up here...I still remember him saying to a reporter in a crowd after his beloved Operation Desert Storm ended. The reporter asked Bush what was happening with the recession? and Bush said: "Recession? What recession?"

He mostly got in because the Democrats ran Dukakis, who was the worst nominee ever.
Got an ad for some nice looking watches
It's funny that she was trying to be snarky and didn't even know what she was talking about.
He checked his watch, big deal. It wasn’t as symbolic as rolling up his sleeves or fiddling with his tie
To think Bill would go on to be such a predator
She'd be more intelligible asking a calculus question and make more sense too
Changing the question from personal difficulty dealing with personal debt, and struggles to the national debt. Answering a question not asked because you can't give a straight and honest answer.
In the words of Seinfeld, “it was the watch!”😂
That question is ridiculous.
The moderator should have let Bush answer the original question. It's a complex economic reason for why national debt matters and changing the topic was incredibly unfair.
Also, the moderator should have taken the mike from the idiot lady because it was a loaded question.
How can someone argue on senseless question, what a dumb time.
Exactly. The question made no sense. No wonder Bush was confused. I think Clinton read through her lines and had the rehearsed answer. It won him the election though.
Wow, she has personal problems with national debt. She should be president
Sad to say that President Bush couldn't answer her question, but Clinton was able to connect with her.
clinton understood how to handle the question much better than bush
It was explained to him by the moderator before he answered it. Bush and Perot were blindsided by how stupid a question it was!!! He also had time to sit and process it, because Bush went first!!!

This question was absolutely idiotic. She missed her car payment because of the national debt????
He was right.
It's just so funny how President Bush raises his eyebrows suddenly after being interrupted TWICE😂 He's like "What are you talking about? I'm answering!"
President Bush was by no means perfect at this response, but he responded well enough and you can also see an obvious preference in her question. She never interrupted Clinton and seemed to be nodding in agreance, a posible planted question to make Bush look bad. She also doesn't seem to have any clue of what the national debt really is, because she wouldn't be asking the question in the first place, everyone is affected by the national debt, rich, middle class or poor. President or not.
what i don't understand is why he stood up to check his watch. if he remained seated it would've been far more conspicuous.
wow how times change..
A president taken down by a 20 year old with a lisp. How fickle American politics really is.
His checking the watch wasn't the problem. It was the ignorance of the question. Intimating that Bush didn't understand financial hardship and economic turmoil simply because he'd never had problems paying a mortgage is ludicrous. Dumb question.

This is the same guy who said "no new taxes" and then started doing more taxes.
