Honestly, I would never steal anything ever, but I wouldn’t feel guilty about tricking the 407 cameras. That highway was built with our tax dollars, sold to a private company and now is too expensive to use. Nobody should be charged that egregious amount of money to travel through our province. They’re just stealing from us legally.

Good point, but the biggest problem is that anyone can be a victim of this scam, even if they don't live around Toronto. They can randomly copy someone's Tags, just like dialing a phone number. Those tags need some reflective security feature that cameras can reflect.
With the 401 expansion completed I’ll probably be turning in my transponder soon. Never use the 407 anymore.

The first question is why do we have a toll road in a country where we pay so much taxes? Toll road are the crime.

The real question is why do people elect conservative governments. In BC the NDP removed all tolls as soon as taking office. They are aggressively catching up to 20 years of no infrastructure upgrades creating total gridlock with new bridges and highway and subway projects. All government projects require union scale wages for workers.
It is, however, illegal to replicate the royal crown without permission.
In my country you can make and buy numberplates freely. Obviously it is illegal to use the one not assigned to you. Please, please don't tell me that in Canada the government makes all the license plates.
@@DefenderPuma each province is responsible for plate production, the government makes and supplies all plates. Plates are assigned to the driver not the vehicle, once a plate is assigned to a driver it is their plate for life unless:

That's actually kinda cool that you get to keep a plate for life.
In South Africa it works very differently. You register your car with the municipality. The plate is assigned to the vehicle. If the vehicle changes ownership, a new plate will be assigned. If you move your residence to another province the plate will be changed. In two provinces we still use the old system where each municipality has a different prefix. So if you move to a different town the plate will need to change.
Although there are strict specifications, the physical plates can be made and sold by private companies.
It's illegal to use plates that do not match your registration so I don't think it matters who makes them.
Not illegal to print/produce/sell your own novelty license plate as long as you don't use it on a real vehicle? That's like saying it's ok to print your own money as long as you don't use it to purchase merchandise. Bloody ridiculous.
It is actually legal to print your own money this long as long you don't use it to purchase stuff. It cannot be a copy but you can make your own design and show value on the bill.

I highly doubt the Spanish company that owns the 407 will be offering refunds.
It’s 50% owned by the Canada Pension plan. 44% by that Spanish investment company and the rest is a Canadian company AtkinsRéalis - so now it’s majority Canadian owned.

This is a problem that needs to get fixed asap! Friend of mine got pulled over because someone had stolen his plates and switched them for another set. Imagine being pulled over by a bunch of police cars all at once! Wasn't how he wanted his day to start! It is a government issued item and should not be legal to copy in any way!

@@ExtremePainGamesActually that happened to my parents as well, thieves swapped the plates without my parents knowledge and the first they heard of it was when the cops caught the thieves and called to say they found our stolen car but our car was obviously still in the garage... They think the plates were swapped in the shopping lot parking lot and the thieves look for cars that are similar to theirs. It's a good idea to use at least one security screw per plate just as it's wise to put at least one security lug on your tire rims. The thieves would just move on to easier pickings.
Sounds like people don't do a visual check on their cars... 😅 now that's laziness

@@digitalcurrents More a matter of not checking. When's the last time you've checked your license plate... It's not as if one would expect their plates to have been swapped. Also, perhaps you should review your posts to see how obnoxious you are.
This seems like the transportation ministry is refusing to call the ministry that regulates retail!!! Perhaps the question of why is it legal to sell novelty plates should go to the retail sector... But, you know they will pass the buck to the legislative people!
Dumbest idea I have ever likely heard for the Provincial Governments not to make them themselves.
The plates are printed now, not stamped metal. You only have to modify an inkjet printer to take a solid sheet of metal to make convincing fakes now. I even have a laser printer that has a straight path option in case you want to print on something stiff like a sheet of metal, it's meant for printing on hard thick stock such as thick business cards or signs and placards. It's long past the point where banning the cimmercial sale would work and with Internet sales, it's vendors in other countries that are not subject to the same regulations, you can even 3d print working guns now and most of the guns captured from criminals in the last few years were home made ghost guns.

there is nothing at all the province of Ontario can do about this. These plates are available from web sites world wide, including the US and Asia. It's a symptom of our times for which there is no cure.
I have seen a lot of License plates that appear to be questionable at best. And this is in Ottawa.
This is good to know. Just drive around the local mall find a vehicle of the same Make and color of yours and boom no more paying camera tolls. Plus as long as you're not doing anything else if police officer routinely runs your tag it's going to come back to the same make and model vehicle. Not a bad scam.

Sorry... pardon me... I, myself, have to Prove it was not me! And... I have to pay for a new plate? Thinking the onus is on the wrong party folks. Person can simply add an identifying mark/window decal to avoid subsequent fines easily. If the province's design for toll collection is inadequate, well that's what the corporation bought.

Easy, make it a 100K fine. Then add this to a ticket, parking enforcement/police can verify based on the car type/color/vin. Plus add a bounty for those reported by the public

In the States, it will be up to the individiual state to decide, but mine considers any sort of fradulent use of license plates or registration to be a state felony punishable by incarceration in state prison for more than a year. Between restitution, legal fees, and everything else, you're easily looking at $10,000 US or more. It's a fairly good deterrent.

There should be a system to make sure its a real plate, like an inbedded chip that can be read wirelessly from a distance of at least 100m while moving.
I agree, but the problems are potential misuse of this technology (intercepting signals as cars pass by means license plates can be cloned and their signals replicated with it even more difficult to prove, government misuse in terms of location tracking, and still having to bill non-ontario plates).
Someone cloned my plates as well last year. When I got a parking ticket from Barrie that was the first instance. Called the city and we figured maybe it was a clerical error. Then in April I got a call from Ajax police saying I stole fuel from a gas station in March while I was at work in Northern Ontario. At that point I knew that my plate had been cloned so I had to spend the money for new plates so they could catch the fraudster. It's frustrating that I should have to pay for new plates in this type of instance.

Plate @1:12, that’s a stretch to call it an “exact match or clone” as there are very apparent differences in the shape of the text just by comparing them. That said, 407 cameras could easily be fooled by them no doubt.

I have seen paper plates on range road in ottawa all last summer. That is ambassador row, you would think cops might have noticed. A lot of plates are illegible these days due to age and/or dirt
The fines need to go up impoundment of motor vehicle
MB BC and ON are the only 3 left that require a front plate.
What thieves do, is just find a similar model/color car, steal your front plate ( because how often do you check that) and then put it on their stolen units.
Wtf? You're in Canada. You should walk around the car and have a look under it before driving. Wildlife is abundant there.
Every Ontario driver should buy these novelty plates. That will force change.
The criminals will always be one step ahead regardless of technology used.
The plate also need to match the car type and color. If cops do there job and look up plate when car is pull over and find it don't match arrests them no bail. But i guess not for woke police and politicians.
When we bought our new SUV the dealership fumbled the colour on the ownership, and therefore in the system the SUV was a different colour than what it actually was.
Having a new child literally the following week we couldn't exactly afford to turn the vehicle away and wait for things to get sorted out.
So my wife got pulled over 3 weeks later with the baby in the vehicle, had a friendly chat with the cop since he noted the colour was different. No problem, as we were in the process of sorting it out.
But according to you - she should've been dragged out of the car and tossed in jail ?

Typical government allowing this unlawful tactic to force the innocent public to clear their name. Hwy 407 and all toll road cameras should be made to identify the vehicle, not just the plate.
It’s comical that one of the main jobs given to long term corrections sentences is making license plates. The country has been training them for their release.
It's really unfortunate that this happens, it just makes it more difficult for people like me who collect license plates to get them if people are in fear of them being stolen and put on cars.
The individual provinces and states could go after the sellers for copyright infringement as they hold the copyright on their licence plantes.
407 should not be tolled. ALONE be allowed to even use the prefix "400" which is used for ONTARIO PROVINCIAL HIGHWAYS IN THE 400 SERIES, NOT ROADS OWNED BY COMPANIES THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH TRANSPORTATION EVEN OR BE SUPPORTED BY THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT. Make the highway lose their access to using the name 407, make a new 407 connecting to the part of the 407 owned by the Ontario Government, or just leave it like that, and close all roads that connect to the 407 ETR to waste their money.
They need to raise the fine to at least $1000 if we want a greater deterrence.

This should be beyond the scope of the province. The feds should expand whatever law punishes identity theft to prosecute people who do this.

It's time to use RFID tags on stickers that you stick to your front windows. They can just be read digitally from as far as 50 feet away and we could even just log what cars pass through the entry and exits of various intersections as well as controlled intersections and many cities already have RFID readers to track buses, traffic patterns and toll road subscribers. There's even RFID readers on many smart phones though those are configured for a few inches of range. The US has been using stickers on your front windshield for licence plate renewals and emissions testing for decades and various Canadian provinces such as Alberta have stopped with the renewal stickers on the licence plates.
In the past, the licence plate was stamped so not too many people had the equipment to make convincing copies but now, they are printed so a modified inkjet printer is all that you need. It's like how less scrupolous independent cornerstore grocery stores have been modifying inkjet printers so they can print new expiration dates on their expired products.
If you make 113 gross you only clear 6k a month. That’s the outrageous tax burden in this Province and to add insult to injury they want you to pay to use a highway that YOUR TAX money helped build. CRI- Min/AL!!

@@nightfly1985They email you a link to your monthly travel history every month. Why would you have to try and contact them to get your travel history. The thing is, it wouldn't be much proof as the reason for the email is so that you can edit the record, deleting points and changing the place names in case they guessed the wrong store or restaurant that you visited. Also if you're bright, you would set a time limit for them to delete the data they have on you.
Note, they use the travel history to annotate the photos they download from your phone every day as a "backup".

Then by the 3rd phone call are email they will look at you're evidence Then lose it are close the case haft to re open it . Process the steps again.... I'm going to a process at the moment so far I go 5 phone calls and 0 return and 12 emails with 3 return saying their no case here

Once, while waiting in line for ice cream, I noticed a blue car in front of me with the same license plate as mine.😮 After asking around, I learned it was a different model and color, so no cause for concern. However, during my recent plate renewal, I was shocked to discover $150 in parking tickets that I had no knowledge of.😢 It seems police checks on vehicle registrations should be more frequent.
FYI those Candian plates also work great here in the U.S. too for toll roads. Just saying for all those NYC people out there.
This fine is laughably low compared to the costs of using the 407. It's not deterring anyone. Get real.

This is Canada, nothing will be done. I see many cars with plates that are either hidden with dark plastic covers or paintless plates which can't be read from 15 feet away. Nothing is done and nothing will be done.

It would be so easy for ON to make their plates harder to copy like the rest of the provinces. It’s THE MOST plain and simple plate in the country. Just throw a graphic/logo on it or something.

Time to make plates obsolete.. put a digital beacon on all vehicles tied to a database showing licensing and insurance.

This is a very simple issue to fix, all we need are license plates that have anti-counterfeit tech on / in them. Money is designed so it can't be counterfeited through design, paper, and other measures, why not do the same thing with a license plate?
You can still make them out of metal, but add in complex computer signature design patterns, such as cryptographically orthogonal QR designs, and then an RFID chip (or another tech), the plate.
Finally add a serial marker to the plates, but the serial must be a cryptographical orthogonal serial, that is determined based on the QR orthographic pattern, salted with the plate's ID / number.
Now, since the solution is simple, you can probably spin up a test system in a day or two, how long until we have the solution in practice? 1-year, 5-years, 10?
It's not up to you, to prove you weren't somewhere, it's the issuer of the ticket to prove you were in that place. It's simply enough to say: “No, prove I was there, show me a picture of the car, with the VIN visible.” If they can't do that, then they have nothing, so just refuse to pay and go to court.

This has been going on for years. It happened to me. I got 3 parking tickets. Good luck trying to prove your innocent to Toronto's cash cow APS.
I could maybe prove where I was because I could’ve been at work for example. How are we supposed to prove where our car was not everyone has surveillance parking lots. 🤔

Isn't there a mechanism to cross reference plate to vehicle make/model? Or to look at the renewal sticker which certainly would be missing.... If it's determined in violation (especially at a parking meter) the vehicle could be immobilized or impounded. This is 2024, there's technology to be used!

It doesn't matter who makes the real and legitimate plates. What matters, is that it is not illegal for anyone to make and sell plates that duplicate someone else's car plates.

You can pay for fancier affinity plates. The regular plates are plain because they want to make money selling you more attractive plates. The problem is the plates are printed now, not stamped so anyone can make convincing copies with just an inkjet printer.

This is ridiculous, only in canada happens this. We are not responsible for someone else crime, police and mto and 407 are responsible. They have to find a way to catch them and not charging athers. 407 need to have pictures of the car and match it with the plate number. Is not my responsibility to pay $59 because someone else duplicate my plate number.
