Nak CR-4 is famous for it's awesome sound-quality..it's also an high end deck like his brothers..the CR-7 , ZX-7 , ZX-9 and Dragon.(the sound is even higher than the specified.. 21khz).I have the ZX-7 ..,CR-4 and 5 other Nakamichi's..they all are insane sound-quality..even the basic' versions...
Just from what my ears hear from what I'm picking up from the speakers, I think the Revox sounds richer for sure. However, I'm not sure if there's a slight alignment issue between the two decks. The other question would be where was it recorded? I know this is no comparison, but I have a friend that had the really high end Nakamichi deck and it sounded like the azimuth didn't align with my Technics BR465 deck and his tapes sounded a little muffled in my deck. Prerecorded cassettes sounded correct in my Technics deck, too but a little off in his Nakamichi. I don't know if Nakamichi has their own alignment standard or not. When they're playing back their own recordings, there's no comparison. Anyway, thank you for sharing. You get a like from me.
Hi! Why are you recording a type IV Maxell tape with SX (Type I) selector ON? It affects BIAS level, recording EQ and recording level, because the EQ switch only changes part of the REC EQ and of course the playback EQ. For a correct REC EQ and BIAS, you should select the type IV (ZX) and 70uSec EQ. Ajust the BIAS and Level with the built in test and start the recording. A metal tape recording in such condition, sounds like crap... I assure you that the Nakamichi CR-4 responds with Type I,II and IV quality grade tapes from 15Hz to 23kHz at -20db +/- 3db. From 15Hz to 12kHz at 0db +/-3db , and 15Hz to 20kHz 0db +/- 3db, with Dolby C. It can sound worst than the Revox, but give it a chance... Best regards
Those who choose revox are obviously brand fans. You are not giving a fair answer. listen carefully. nakamichi sounds more realistic. revox polishes the sound, it's a fake sound. JAPAN > german. i am a sony user but on cassettedeck "NAKAMICHI = cassettedeck god".

A CR4 sounds as good as a CR7. Just missing the auto calibration and head adjustment. Both sound superior to a Revox 215. I’ve compared all three on a set of QUAD ESL 63.
У Накамичи, после первой перестановки, чуть уровень громкости показался ниже. Или , что заметил и повлияло на такое впечатление, это, что Ревокс резче играет, вырезано заполнение, а Накамичи спектром богаче, мягче. Это тут уже кому, что нравится.
Revox is the shit nakanishi is cool but the revox got no belt n sound much better to my hear i got two revox love them they are like a tank i got nakanishi RX 303 2 of them they got mess up both of them the tape deck is wierd got linemen that really suck it play whit belt i hate that now i need to fix my 2 nakanishi RX 303 is a cool tape deck you adjust the tape deck n that really suck it was hard to play it it got like a piece of metal i took it out it sound i put it back it sound n the sound leave that really crazy i bougth them cus they cool n sound good too but when i bought the 2 revox the sound was much better to me the nakanishi is louder but the revox is more clear n sound beutiful now i have to send my nakanishi to fix it sound when i take that metal the is in the head of the tape deck n that is weird i found a dude that fix all kind of tape deck so soon i send it to fix
Of course,Nakamichi will sound like shit! Have you'll seen any tape calibration performed to CR 4? I have heard cassette 40 years old AGFA stereochrome recorded on Nak! Boy,u cannot believe ears! So stop with Revox!

This comparison is without Dolby C. I prefer the SONY CX20188 Dolby C IC over the Hitachi HA12058.

I've reviewed these two machines and the Dragon it's close but the Revox/Studer just has it in depth and more meat on the bones.. It always did

It is easy to explain the difference in sound quality - playback heads are not set at the same azimuth (it may be).

You’re shooting into a light source and the flare is washing out your blurry image , try wiping the vaseline off your lens.
Just by looking at these decks one can see that the Nakamichi is the real deal. Then the sound just floors the red fox.
Nakamichi sounds warmer but this is entry level version. Was this recorded on Revox? Buy ZX9, CR7 or Dragon, then compare!!!

You should have released the eq-button earlier on the CR-4 and also don't use the Dolby when playing.(Dolby chokes the sound-richness)...
Revox is winer, for me.
