I just saw this for the first time last night and I was blown away by the visceral power of it. Perhaps because I had been warned about its content in advance, and knew something of the historical incident upon which it was based, I didn't find it nearly as shocking or gratuitous as expected. Instead, I was mostly surprised by the strength of the acting, directing, and cinematography.
The writing was also excellent in some scenes, such as when the Baron was taunting Grandier.
"You have one consolation. Hell shall hold no surprises for you."

I can see how 50 years ago, it was shocking. By modern standards, it isn't. Its strengths lie in, as you say, how well made of a film it is. The fact that it is based on one of those stranger-than-fiction historical events probably helps.

@@briancardio6567 you are under the impression that the conservatives own our culture now. How do you not notice how things have changed over the years. My guess is that maybe something in the movie is 'problematic.' It was about a man that was demonized by a whole group of psychotic women, wasn't it? The church still has a market share ... but no power anymore over our culture. Notice how the new regime is just as censorious and controlling in their way?

Holy Shit. Holy Grail video. This week I've read many articles particularly on how American cinema has totally hit the creative skids, film produced based on algorithms of what our lazy public is prepared to watch. Predictable nonsense, canned ironic music. This is the total antithesis of that. Art, philosophy, politics, emotion, the power of film and music. You need a cup of tea after watching this for sure.

    • @MicahMicahel
      @MicahMicahel Год назад

it's not algorithms to blame. It's the political messaging that comes from corporate ESG scores. A movie can lose money now but if it has woke messaging the financiers will get better ESG scores. Movies are gamed by rich people and corporations now. They are propaganda because the corporations get better credit scores when they make propaganda. They also own the media so they will blame it on algorithms but it's purposeful and you will recognize it if you have pattern recognition capabilities.
Film or any art can't be married to political ideology. Sometimes there's a woke movie that's good.. that pulls it off, like the Shape Of Water. Most others just seem like political advertisements.
Corporate ESG scores are basically woke values if you want to know what ESG scores push.

"They say Ken Russell has gone too far...." What an excellent opening for a trailer for The Devils. I know I shall never have the opportunity to see this on a big screen and 35mm but I would settle for a director's cut blu ray . I have only seen the truncated and emasculated version. I love the Huxley book on the subject, more for the digessive philosophical chapters more than the main narrative. As an atheist I love all attempts to show organized religious forces for the bullies that they are. This might explain the hostility directed at this film. Hopefully at some near future date we will see the complete version.

As an atheist do you see how the atheistic groups combined to form a new religion that is censoring and controlling film and literature more than the religious regime had? As an atheist do you see how humans seem to be hard wired to form religions, even when they don't believe in any God? As an atheist do you understand how the new religion of wokeness bas this movie because it's about a group of psychotic women that demonize a 'toxic male' character?
Quetin Tarantino says we're in the worst phase of movies in movie history because of political narratives interfering. Funny how politics became religion and people base everything on fake news controlled by billionaires now. Coooovid became the new religion for a while. The atheists were the most indoctrinated. If you believe in nothing you will get fooled by stupid ideologies.
The new atheist movement turned into woke religious zealots. Universities have become intellectually intolerant... because of the atheists! There is only one answer to every question in the universities. Movies are garbage now... except for some indy horror mob=vies and the occasional movie that dares like Mandy.

@@MicahMicahel I do not identify with this extremist wing of atheism. Every movement has a faction which takes itself far too seriously and become exactly what they profess to hate. Their intolerance is as repulsive as the religious Right. I cannot wait until this word 'woke' is retired. It made me cringe the first time I heard it and had a sneaking suspicion that it would ultimately be used against those who started it. This is the English language being perverted by individuals who seem to have only a very fundamental understanding of what I assume is their first language. I understand the principles behind it but the word has become a net which ensnares many things for one objective. I've never used the word unless it is in the context of being awakened from sleep. But to lump all atheists in this "woke" culture is very short-sighted. Although I imagine there is a community of these idiots who are hellbent on bullying everyone into submission and make the world bland and uptight. I am just a humble observer who finds this human species deeply damaged and hope that when we exterminate ourselves that we leave some of Nature intact to rebuild and renew itself. To quote George Carlin on the idea that humanity is the creation of a divine mind: "If this is the best god can do I'm not impressed." 😂 😂 😂

@@madahad9 why is the religious right repulsive? DO you believe this movie depicts the religious right of today? Their belief is anti abortion. Is that repulsive? We can actually save babies after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If there's a financial incentive these babies could be artificially induced and live healthy lives into adoption. With our technology there's no need to have abortions anymore. It's unnecessary cruelty. The corporations don't want women getting pregnant as much. That's why we have people liking abortion. Understand there's no need for it? Most women would feel better having the baby extracted from them rather than a device put into them scraping and cracking off body parts. It's horrible process. The corporations are convincing peep sth babies have to die but that's so 20th century. People are brainwashed into blaming religious people for what they should be mad at the corporations for. Many corporations pay for abortions, not because they are the opposite of repulsive but that they want the woman not to miss any work time. How is it repulsive to want to use technology to save the women and the babies?
I'm assuming that's why they are repulsive.. am I correct?
Actually... the left invented the term but started hating it when the right used it. teh right is way less sophisticated with language so when tehy control the narrative in any linguistic sense they are told the word they use is ...bad... or cringe. It's just a word. It means they use oppression narratives and adhere to corporate ESG score values. Teh woke people are basically brainwashed by ESG score initiatives. Why would the word bother you?
These people are the new religion. They fell for this new corporate religion invented by academics that were bullied when they were little. If you are an atheist, it's normal that you fell for this corporate religion that has the purpose to divide people. It's naturaltural because if you believe in nothing you will fall for this religion that is almost invisible. It has original sin and people are regularly shamed for speaking against orthodox. A woke person can't define woman. Ask one of them to define a woman and if they can't they are probably woke.
If you can't define woman because you are afraid of the cancel mob you're in a cult. The cult exists only through atheism.
I DON"T lump all atheists into woke culture. That would be silly. I'm saying as a group, not as individuals. I'm not even being a religious chauvinist. If you're a Scientologist you are probably protected from wokeness and I think that's a silly religion.
All atheists are nihilists at heart.
Nihilism is hard to cope with. People need something and the corporate woke religion was created too fill the void and make thecorporations the new godless gods.
Your comments embraced nihilism. It has to hurt somewhere deep inside of that sou you deny the existence of. the woke religion is a religion without a god so it never satisfies and it's designed that way. It is the academic critical method. Basically everything will be turned upside down.

@@MicahMicahel They probably would love to have these powers restored to them. They still engage in some very vile practices but in another period they were accountable to no one and were free to indulge in all types of corruption. The film, exaggerated as it is, is a microcosm of Catholic perversity. They have no moral high ground to stand on. I oftentimes wish that such a place as hell existed and these individuals are there now suffering for their hypocrisy. I don't believe they're all perverts but the "good" ones are probably shielding the rotten ones, just like the police force. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
