  • Local basketweaver Mircea Cordoș from Breb, Maramureș, had turned to hazel basket weaving in 1985, after an unfortunate accident at the farriery that had left him crippled. His loving wife, Mărioara, climbs the mountain to fetch hazel rods, which he then splits and shaves into ribs for basket weaving.
    The complete process of #basketweaving a two-hands tall slat pack basket took two days, including harvesting and preparation of the materials needed. The family was very welcoming and eager to give basket weaving lessons. (Read the article on our Blog at peasantartcraf... )

      I have made a few baskets but don't have this hazel where I live.
      Moving to Ohio in the U.S. and they have lots of hazel there. This art won't be lost for a while if I have any say in it. Lol

      This was one of the best vids I've seen. These split many times and like spruce roots are very strong when woven together.
      Thank you both for such an interesting lesson and technique!
      I'd much rather make a basket than buy one and I hope to let you see one that I've made simply because you shared your knowledge with the world.

    Great video! You have me wondering now if my mulberry will work. I don't have enough hazel yet, but working on it.

    • @kellyroup4262
      @kellyroup4262 6 месяцев назад +1

      Mulberry will work for frames just don't get too carried away with the bending. Take your time and a mulberry branch will bend into a very small hoop for frames.
      I've not tried to split it like he done with hazel but I will with this new spring growth because it does have long straight fibers like the hazel.

      @@kellyroup4262 I am just getting to this and finding it challenging to get more than 1 rib off a mulberry branch. I am going to try to rive the branch into 4 or 3 ribs then shave them down to see if that will work. The one rib I am getting is great, but just seems like a waist of a whole branch to only get one rib out of it. I will figure it out but want to thank you for a great video! I do have hazel here but it is not established enough here yet to be viable. Takes time to figure all this out.
