  • An old BBC radio broadcast of a classic detective Maigret story
Published in 1931, it is one of the earliest novels to feature Inspector Maigret in the role of the chief police investigator. In this classic tale, Maigret investigates the murder of a Jewish diamond-merchant, the suspicious death of a businessman, and the killing of an unlucky commercial traveler.

Loved Maigret with Jean Gabin. I can always tell the distinct voices of Maurice Denham and Michael Gough, great actors.

The great war is the first world war, 1914-18. The book written in 1931 so a few years before the second world war 1939-1945 (I'm British hence the dating), which makes the picture pretty well dated. Sorry to be picky but I was a little taken aback at your dating of the great war.

@@jessamysilverman3058 Yes, WWI was the Great War, the War to End All Wars. Of course, any war you are in is a great war.

There is something that doesn't quite 'gel' with a Continental detective dealing with mostly ordinary class crime in a Continental setting.
Lacks a certain ... je ne sais pas, in the absence of an English setting.

Nice English. Not as incredibly reduced as US "tump-istan" english.
Not as elaborate as fairly decent british english is though.
At least the speakers try to add some (pronouciation) level on top of the written script.
The cheap, anoying adds interrupting the listening are launched by chineese advertizers trying to promote bullshity hair, beard and parfume products.
