The great war is the first world war, 1914-18. The book written in 1931 so a few years before the second world war 1939-1945 (I'm British hence the dating), which makes the picture pretty well dated. Sorry to be picky but I was a little taken aback at your dating of the great war.
There is something that doesn't quite 'gel' with a Continental detective dealing with mostly ordinary class crime in a Continental setting. Lacks a certain ... je ne sais pas, in the absence of an English setting.

At least the speakers try to add some (pronouciation) level on top of the written script. The cheap, anoying adds interrupting the listening are launched by chineese advertizers trying to promote bullshity hair, beard and parfume products.
