- The Southwest Chief is a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak on a 2,265-mile route between Chicago and Los Angeles through the Midwest and Southwest via Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff. Amtrak bills the route as one of its most scenic, with views of the Painted Desert and the Red Cliffs of Sedona, as well as the plains of Iowa, Kansas, and Colorado.
The section of the route through New Mexico is widely considered to be one of the most scenic and historic portions of passenger trackage in the United States. It was at the Lamy station that many of the Manhattan Project scientists disembarked on their way to Los Alamos, including Robert J. Oppenheimer.
It is one of the few remaining areas of trackage that retains vintage early 1900s US&S semaphore and searchlight signals. Riding the Southwest Chief in this area is like taking a trip back in time. These signals are pending replacement and are on very borrowed time, sadly. Enjoy this look at a unique and stunning piece of American railroading!

This is some amazing quality!
Outstanding catches of Amtrak Southwest Chief trains #3 & #4 in the state of New Mexico with the Semaphores still standing happy to see the signals still standing for now.
Beautiful catch!
Glad you liked it!
yeah good catches and video of these southwest chiefs with nice canary shots
The Chief has some of the nicest scenery in the Southwest and some nice old ATSF infrastructure still in operation like the Semaphores and the Searchlight signals. The Delhi wig wag in CO was sadly taken out of service and now in a museum. I heard those semaphores don’t have a lot of time left!
Cool catch with the FRA car at 4:50. Interesting that you caught it in Far Rockaway and then all the way in New Mexico lol...
Hahaha yep! Pretty insane
crazyyyy
