Domino’s Pizza Hopes To Roll Out Self-Driving Delivery | TODAY
Hey everybody - there's a driver in the car to make sure it doesn't mess up. Self-driving still has a ways to go.
It's here....driverless vehicle's
@@lordbaylish3187 I know they're here, doesn't mean it's a good idea. There are too many variables in driving to have a computer do it flawlessly. Look at how many Tesla crashes you still hear about.
Fast forward to 2021 and now we have a truly autonomous real delivery vehicle.

Domino's is also testing a drone based pizza delivery which actually makes a lot of sense, even faster and more fun. ;) It's not even if but when this driverless delivery gets popular, Domino's can sell it to other companies and become a technology company like Tesla. Who would have thought going form Pizza to tech?!
@@gearsofwar3xXx and look at the number of human error crashes there are....trust me...in 50-75 years people will say "I cant believe it was safe to let humans drive such dangerous vehicles".
The one's I see in the commercials aren't big enough to have a driver in there. They look like pure robot control. If I see one I will be turning around and driving the other way. If I'm a pedestrian I'll be running away.
Where’s my drink? You forgot my drink.
SpongeBob: what drink?
@@ZargalaSapphire 🍹Sorry for the 7 month delay. Have an upgrade
so I now have to walk outside to grab the pizza instead of the driver brining it to my door?
Best part about this video is at the beginning u can actually see a person is driving the car
Thank you ford and dominos for making sure my whole neighborhood knows I’m a fatass by yelling my food is here lol
So you're saying if I know someone's phone number I can just wait for this car to show up to there house and get free pizza?...... I'm in.
Isn't the whole point of pizza delivery the fact you DON'T have to go outside?
Henry Butler yas
No way am I waiting for my pizza at the street. You either come to my door or you get none of my service.
Seriously? You're too lazy to stroll to the corner to get a pizza? Why don't you just invite the driver in to bring the pie to your couch? He (or the bot) could chew it for you and spit it down your mouth, too.
If this gets me a faster pizza, hot instead of me being the third delivery and a lukewarm pizza, I'll be thrilled to walk 20 feet.
@@jancerny8109 youre too lazy to drive to the restaurant to pick up the pizza
You have a point. I live within bowshot of at least two pizza places. I wonder how necessary any innovation in delivery will be in certain markets.

Taking more job's away from human's and more money for the corporation.
ScottTolbert Either way they are doing it with out or with technology. Don't blame technology blame the corporation that don't care about you or anyone
This may surprise you, but the company isn't in business to create jobs. They're trying to deliver a good or service, and if they can do it better or cheaper, or both with fewer employees, they will.
The more efficiently we can produce things the better. Automation makes us more efficient and helps us all in the long run. Work is not necessarily a good thing. There are pros and cons to both
I bet you drive a car, use electricity, use running water, wear modern clothes, all that, don't you?
Riiiight, because our sole purpose in life should be doing some meaningless job. The sooner we get rid of human labour, the better.
Disabled and/or elderly people might have issues
They dont care
Sad to say but it's true
OLD PEOPLE DONT EAT PIZZA , it’s a FACT

Skip the car all together and deliver the pizza to the doorstep by drone.
Newsflash, Domino's is also testing a drone based pizza delivery which actually makes a lot of sense, even faster and more fun. ;)
It's not even if but when this driverless delivery gets popular, Domino's can sell it to other companies and become a technology company like Tesla. Who would have thought going form Pizza to tech?!
No
Maybe Domino's should roll out better pizza instead.
Killa Watt BURN. Just like my pizza...every time i get it
This is my favorite comment! So true! hahaha
Killa Watt I think you're confusing Dominos with Pizza Hut
Hey i work at dominos should come to mine we actually make great pizzas
Their pizza actually is really good. They switched up their recipes a few years back and gave them a try. Give them a shot before throwing shade
Who's going to bring that directly to my door? I'm not paying 2.50 for a delivery charge to get out my house.
All so they can keep 100% of the delivery fees. Greed has destroyed so many good companies
The voice on the pizza car sounds like the reporter. Hey I smell something.
Ford: we made a self driving pizza delivery car !!
Nuro: hold my pizza
Wow I've never heard that type of comment before..dork.
Late seeing this, but coming from someone like myself who handles pizza and deliveries this won't work. People like their food delivered to them without having to do anything but answer the door. I've seen someone so exhausted to even sign the receipt before. The fun part about ordering out is that it's coming straight to you very convenient. Let me see this car handle apartment complexes, walking up 3 stories to a address that reads #1309 people who deliver will know what that means. It can happen for certain businesses but not pizza it's a lazy laid back food group for most people.
RobotStuff Some people already don’t even tip though.
I hate delivering to apartments, lol. Plus, Google Maps is not very accurate at times either, I've done this a while and I still have problems finding the house. Plus, a lot of people like the fact that they don't have to actually open the door either.

You wanted $15.00 an hour minimum wage and this is the result.
I agree with this but most pizza places pay their delivery drivers well below minimum wage already and expect tips to make up the rest of their paycheck. The people making the pizzas are the ones being overpaid when the MW is raised.
Facts stupid people will never get it
Except 15.00 isnt the minimum wage and this happened anyway. Automation is inevitable regardless of wage increases.
The rate of adoption will vary based on how high the minimum wage is, however.
Engineering will be the minimum wage job of the future
A person is still better because he/she comes to your door.
So will it bring it to my door? I live on the fourth floor. I’d rather have a real person.
Imagine if the person while talking to someone and he or she doesn't take their food from the back window and forgot they are about to put their hand to grab the boxes and the window close on their arms and the car automatically drive off with them ? That would be a very freighting tale.
Elevator doors would crush people everyday.
@@lIlIllIIII Exactly 😂
I'm a former delivery driver and I think this is a bad idea.
1. Some customers live in a gated community where a code is required to enter the complex. The customer will have to go all the way out of their complex to meet the car and haul everything back to their place because obviously a car can't press buttons to open a gate. As a customer I don't want to do that if I'm charged a "convenience fee". On top of that it looks like they won't have a pizza bag to carry everything in.
2. Handicapped/bedridden customers: Back when I delivered pizzas I've had some customers who were unable to meet me at the door and I've had to enter their house then bring their food bedside. They'd leave a note under delivery instructions saying, "Door unlocked." or something similar. I guess they're out of luck if they want a pizza delivered.
3. Cash: Not everyone has, or is comfortable using, a credit card to pay for things and would rather pay with cash. Yes, many customers still use cash but how is that going to work with this thing?
4. GPS: It's not spot-on 100% of the time and a human would easily notice that they're at the wrong place rather than a self-driving car whose only input is the GPS.
5. Where are all your drivers going to go? "Thanks for your service but you're no longer needed."
Bad move Domino's Pizza.
These driverless cars will likely be limited to areas close to the store and to customers who order frequently. Drivers will also exist, but they will deliver pizza farther away from the store, making tips more worth it.
You're probably right in your objections--I think xMurkNx had the right idea, though. Those companies that adopt this will switch to a two-tier system, with 'bots handling most of the deliveries and a human driver on standby for the more complex situations, or to troubleshoot navigation errors--which will probably lessen as the technology improves. (If the 'bot could communicate with a customer's phone app, once it's in range of the house's wifi, it might not even need GPS.)
Not to mention, how will this automated car fill up gas on its own? It doesn't have hands, so what will it do?
Making it electric may solve this, but that would of course be pricier for the franchisee.
All in all I used to be a delivery driver for a pizza place and Jimmy Johns, and I agree with you. This is a dumb idea. Although to be fair, I think the whole concept of a self driving car in general is a dumb idea.
HuskyGamersUNITE ya and everyone thought it was stupid idea that trump would actually be president yet here we are, im just saying crazier things have happened.
dude what the heck i just got hired as a driver this isnt cool hope this doesnt go any farther cause this is not gonna work at all
Get a real job then.
Be wary of jobs that can easily be replaced by robots. Work on learning valuable skills that can't easily be replicated by AI in the meantime.
Get a real job? Why delivering is a fake job or what
It won't. I'm a driver as well, but I am not concerned about this becoming a thing, there's a guy riding along in the car, I'm sure there'll be some kind of "human" factor with this thing. People won't like it if they have to put some effort into their delivery, which is the whole point of delivery is that it does go up to your door.
What if someone can't leave their house because they are older and can't walk outside good.
Or what if someone has a broken leg or in a wheelchair and can't go outside good
Everything is just so wonderful on The today show. I watch it when I'm sad
Is the car going take the pizza to my door 😂😂
I realize that Domino's not the best paying job, but it just goes to show you the greedy are getting greedier.... this is a recipe for disaster.
I mean it has made them money so what do you expect
so nobody gonna comment about the dude in the drivers seat
The whole idea of delivery is so you don't have to step foot outside
Looks like ill be going pick up only.deliver a pie at 1030 at night 📯da da daaaa 📢pizza delivery....
I hope this never happens
Hahah something tells me this aint gonna work right
What happens when a sensor goes out and it crashes 😂
So I'm watching a live football game on the tv but then i gotta go outside and get my pizza
For my Domino's delivery special request/ info: roll down the windows n blast trance on ur way to my house... take the long route bruh
Why get out of house if you want pizza delivered, why just go in the store & wait for pizza to be cooked is that not the point!
Just to think that this might be our future it's scary, remember 20 years ago we would only see this in the the Jacksons Family cartoon...
What is scary in that? Freeing people from doing meaningless tasks just so they'd have money to be able to live, instead of following their passion and giving to the humanity what's best in them?
@Cagney Walker right
It's a two edge sword, as another commenter wrote above, it frees up people from doing menial jobs, possibly retrain them to do more skilled jobs (for example programming these robot delivery vehicles). The downside is the lack of human interactions which seems to be disappearing every since the internet became popular. (I'm not talking about the COVID lockdown but in general).
Or watch dogs
I seriously doubt this is going to be cost effective. And what happens when the car breaks down? Currently thats the drivers responsibility. That cost will go to the company which will in turn roll over to the consumer.
Only one order can delivered at a time this way. With a person you can deliver 2 or so
2017: I DONT WANT TO GO TO MY CURB TO GET MY PIZZA!
2020: Finally, an excuse to get out!
Nah. Bring it to my bedside and now we're talking.
Lol so true! 😅😂🤣
I'm not concerned, the way Google Maps messes up the house addresses, people will be wanting actual drivers..
What if you order a soda?🤔
Self driving cars are cheaper than lawsuits apparently
what if the Window doesn't roll down/ get's stuck or rolls up on you while retrieving the pizza?
gsxellence
They do anything to remove a good job from someone who wants to earn a few bucks.
or someone else comes and takes it
Nope, not happening. It does not walk to the door like a delivery guy.
This would never work, at least at our store. GPS does not know where every dorm building number on a UC campus and where every Library, Class hall is nor does the car know where shortcuts that we drivers know. Many students stay on 3 to 4 levels with no elevators. You expect them to find the car, and carry their food up all those stairs again? What about the hotels? You expect them to get dressed, go down outside at 1 in the morning (if it is)? What about drunk or sleeping customers or those that never answer the door or answer their phone (which happens occasionally)? Apartment/Condominiums communities? Where to go at the airport like which terminal, car rental, taxi area, etc.? Business parks buildings? You think people are willing to go outside in inclement weather to retrieve their pizza? What about larger orders? We routinely get orders of 20-30 pizzas. That compartment would maybe fit 4 mediums tops. Where do the sodas go? It does not look good for taking multiple orders at a time. Drivers know to take the older orders first and taking the best route during traffic hours, avoiding construction, accidents, dui checkpoints, etc. Those vehicles look expensive too. You think every franchise owner will buy one of those let alone like 30-40 of them like at my store? I would bet anything there would still be a delivery charge still as the maintenance and gas costs money. Nothing about this sounds logical. Whatever happened to the DXP? Why are they even wasting their time with this idea? There are so many flaws to not having a live person serve you that only the car can’t do. Good luck when someone forgets to pack something and you have to god knows how long before they send it back out.
How well will the sensors work in a Michigan snow, ice, rain storm. Alot of people order delivery when the weathers bad. I dont see this car managing an icy hill like an experienced driver could.
Just ordered one of these today but this is the first time I've been given this as an option
I mean dont want to be rude and say I dont wanna have to interact with the delivery guy but the main reason is they gotta use it and test it to improve it or make a better version by it actually being used
It charges $3.00 extra though 3 dollars just for the self driving
This self-driving vehicle would be great during the pandemic. Lol
They should have used their psychic powers and rolled out this technology 10 years ago. It may have been developed enough by now to have helped a lot of people during the pandemic receive groceries, medical supplies, and of course, pizza. 😉
@@scootermom1791 Yep
Guess i dont need to leave a tip with no driver lol
doesn't really make sense you can pay a delivery driver maybe 16000 year
or
you can buy one of these self-driving cars for over $25,000
plus
then you have to pay thousands for the gas and the thousands more for maintenance
seems like it would be cheaper just to have the delivery driver
Erm, at 25k, even with a gas/maintenance cost of say, 5k per year, you'd still see a return on your investment in ~2.5 years... Seems like a solid investment.
(Of course, I'm sure they cost way more than 25k, so in real life it'd be longer.)
How much of a percent will the consumer get taken off their bill for having to still leave their house to get a pizza delivered?
I feel like a human present in the vehicle should be a requirement you never if or when the car will malfunction
didn't the team from the show Prototype This! (2008-2009) made a prototype of one of those automatic pizza delivery cars and robots?
People are not going to want to go out in in climate weather to get their pizza.
Then, they'll have a robot guy delivering the pizza.
Carryout is always an option. Maybe a gym too, since they can't walk outside to get their pizza.
They don't wear gloves when making the pizza
They probably washed her hands a lot more. I seen cashier's take money with glove hands and use those same hand to make food
No we dont because our oven cooks the germs away
@@annearly3200 yes every pizza we have to wash our hands and every time we touch wet toppings like jalapenos or diced tomatos
Most places domt use gloves to cook
@@Julian-do7bv yes to cook not like a deli or subway they need gloves handling cold food if they are cooking its at a really hot temperature so the germs cook off.
Am I the only one offended when she said pineapple is weird at the end?
That's because pineapple on pizza is weird.
Angel Ramirez Smh 🤦♂️
Whenever I eat a pizza, there’s always pineapple slices, I don’t know why other people don’t like it. I mean it’s sweet, tasty and healthy and it’s pretty much why I like pizza apart from the cheese inside the thick crusts.
Does the car have a drivers license?
You no longer get a rude delivery driver. You also don't have to feel bad about not tipping the driver
No but you do have to pay the cost for the Domino's to pay for a $40,000 0 driverless electric car
What do you mean " Are customers going to be receptive "...? They won't have a choice and very few will even care
Big gimmick..i want my pie delivered to my door....
@BLaZzedOuTs nothing about being fat when you pay a crap ton for some mediocre pizza to be delivered you should have it delivered to your door.
Yeah and what if it rains and you don’t bring an umbrella. Or what if a mugger decided to target you while waiting, or worse a kidnapper takes you? This idea compromises safety and security, I would’ve liked the idea of a keyhole at door instead because it’s worked so far so there’s no reason to fix what’s not broken.
I am on the 54th floor, please come over here
5 more years, people won't be making the food either. Now, this could be a good thing if society figures out a way to handle the unemployment rate that will start going up, to where we can move away from people needing to work and instead give them the means to live and do what they desire.
UBI is pretty good concept :)

I live 2 blocks from Little Caesar's but drive 3 miles to get Dominos. Only 2 names on board at that time & 2 employees and another delivery guy shows up making it 3 employees. 6 min left on my pizza. Paid for it & was told by lady working they weren't busy so she'd walk it to my car parked 10 feet from from counter. Small store & parked in front of front door. 10 min later still waiting. 2:30 p.m. HOT outside & they FORGOT about me. She wasn't concerned about it just said "oh I forgot" . They were busy laughing & joking around. 1st things 1st. No wonder Ritch Allison interviewed on Power Lunch saying businesses are struggling.. DUH with employees like!!!! Next time Little Caesar's gets my $$ I would hate to break up Domino's party AGAIN!!
He says it self driving but their is clearly a driver in their

@@MankindDiary No money.
Lucanidae I believe every country has those kind of people, certainly "bright" and "innovative" people aren’t exclusive in just one country because if that’s the case then there wouldn’t be nations or societies for that matter because those things were created by bright and innovative people, the true differences between countries and nations are resources and economies.
If I gotta go outside to this car to get my pizza I might as well get in my car and avoid the delivery charge and get some fresh air. No way I'm ordering from a company who doesn't care enough to send a person to my door who is happy to have a job and a tip in their pocket.
We young people have no hope when we get older all our jobs gonna be taken by technology so why should we go school if all businesses are just gonna get technology to do it

sorry but at the beginning there was a guy in the car
It's experimental, they're not sending them on their own yet.
yeah, but.. I wouldn't be crazy enough to ride in a self-driving car in the experiment phase lol.
Maybe instead people can just check a box somehow saying if they want self driving or not
doubt franchisees would be willing to invest that kind of money in multiple cars especially for the weekends
lol there was a guy driving that autonomous car
They want to spend all that money on robot cars ,but they don’t want to pay the workers more money.

Yep, delivery drivers at Domino's will soon be applying at McDonald's flipping burger. Sadly this is the wave of the future, the cat's out of the bag, so to speak.
There are already cheap jerks that don't tip, as soon as they start getting robots delivering that they know they won't have to tip, they'll be in heaven.
Nice one less job for us actual people.

What if people who have eye sight problems can they still drive in those self driving car? And just delivered it to the costumers
WE NEED MORE JOBS
last year 2012 food delivery was a 13 billion dollar business....what year am i on?? what did i drink last night?
At the beginning they say self driving car and a person in the car is pulling up...
I remember when I was a kid, Dominos made the crappiest pizza.
We have one of those but is has a lazy driver who won't get out his car.
Are they planning drones that come ring the doorbell? I don't order delivery to have my food come all the way across town just to sit fifty feet from my front door
I think Tesla drivers are looking at the floor gently sniggering.
They should replace the code enter with a barcode to scan.
Self driving doesn't mean no humans.
The world will know the Pizza delivery is here.
Pay workers more instead of trying to replace them
Where are they? Never going to happen. Risking lives to deliver food? The first time one of these vehicles hurts or kills someone will be the last time. The companies know it, that's why you don't see them out there.
