Thanks guys, I didn't even know these existed! The first thing I noticed was the resonance on the mandolin, holy cow that made a big difference. The guitar got louder, very obvious, and the depth of tone was really induced. good stuff. Keep on smiling.
I bought one of these when they first came out years ago (welded wire version). It drew some hoots when I first put it on my mandolin. I'm a quiet player and always had problems being heard in a jam. But the Tonegard did help a lot. It wasn't long before they started showing up on mandolins all over the place. I've had several mandolins, but still use the same Tonegard. One caution--keep an eye on the rubber tube cushions that hold it in place.
That is an impressive change, there were moments where the difference wasn't super obvious, yet with certain techniques and attacks the difference was astounding.
I think these would be more evident on higher end guitars like Bedell, Furch or Bourgeois. Where the backs are actually voiced. I'd be curious how these work on Bourgeois x braced backs as they are REALLY in depth voiced at our shop. Maybe not so much to like a taylor or Martin where the backs are as stiff as possible. Just my .02 but my curiosity is peaked! I could hear a bot more clarity and punchiness, great playing as always fellas !
The difference in an unmuted back, is most noticable in Flamenco guitars. So thin and light, the whole guitar vibrates like a drum when picked, keeping the back free to vibrate and minimizing all contact in the knee support makes a huge difference,.its like unmuting a drum.
Great idea! Of course, any good classical/acoustic guitarist or mandolinist already knows that you angle your instrument so its back doesn't touch your body but that's not always possible so a thing like this should be really useful for many. It's not true it will improve the tone of *any* acoustic instrument though. It really only works for instruments with proper good quality solid wood backs. Laminate backs don't really resonate much anyway so there is little to gain for those.
The sound through the "Video" is compressed as part of the encoding to make the video files smaller and easier to stream. This lessons the real dynamic difference between the with or without tonegard samples. They really are more dramatic in person. :-)
Hello Dick Troll. FO and get a life.If you had ever taken the time to do the experiement, you would understand. However I doubt you rarley use anything including your grey matter as demonstarted. Have a nice day.@@Verkrustet
Idk if I missed it but on a mandolin it also helps you to keep the instrument more stable while you are playing. I will never play another live show without one.
I've had one of these on my mandolin for 12 years and it does not ever come off... didn't know about the Tone-gard-dreadnought until now... will have to seriously consider it for my new Boucher... wondering how it will sit in a case if I keep it on...
Great idea, I was sitting down playing the other day and felt the body vibrating on me. I said, self, it will sound better if I pulled the guitar away from me. It was noticeably better sounding. I will check it out.
I appreciated the text on the screen telling whether the guard was on or off the instrument. But then that stopped showing during strumming. So I watched it again and saw that the tabs on the guard were visible from the front.
I believe the difference would also be dependent on the specific instrument. I have some mandolins that the tonegard does nothing for and others that it’s a game changer having it on.
There might be a method to measure the sound power coming out of the guitar with and without the Toneguard. (DECIBEL METER: Setup might depend on location and background noise)
Future guitarists and mandolinists will get a good chuckle out of our use of tone guards, I think. Hey, where's the Le'bra you bought for your Mazda Miata? Ya still got it?
I've just tried this idea on my Walden D351 dreadnought... and by holding the guitar away from my body I can hear more volume and definitely a better low end sound... however I also recorded it on my tablet and could only just hear a slight tone difference.... I'm not sure how much this has to do with where the players ears are in regard to the soundhole and guitar in general... but I'm going to set up a better recording system and have a play with this idea. it's fascinating and takes me back to my uni days when I was doing some unusual projects in the acoustics lab! As the saying goes... 'I wanna believe!'....
The concept makes sense. Did the video capture what you're hearing in the room, maybe not so much. All I could hear was a slight increase in volume. Would love to give one a try, though.
Considering that the back of a carved top mandolin is tuned to a certain frequency, having a tone-card makes total sense. I have a very nice handmade F5 style Mando that is loud without it, but I've been to a jam and had somebody show up with an Eastman (still great mandos) and easily out volume me... never mind my lousy picking techniques.
Have you seen the ARC armrest that JP Cormier reviewed? I would love to see how these two items would work together to allow the top and back to vibrate!
Only point of reference I have is to lift my instrument away from my body which with wearing the strap is held high on my body breast hight. So if I lift the instrument from my body which I never thought to try before now; well just to say there is a huge difference in tone. When sitting as normal the tone is cut right down but holding it free of my body and resonating the strings it is very much louder the richer tone. It is a ukulele probably I will need to make something for myself because now I heard the dirrerence how can I play without it.
Come on. You can't expect to get the full effect based on only a RUclips video and played back on your phone. I bought one of these for my Guild 12 string, and the difference was considerable.
The difference is marked, I love mine! I read a few negative post elsewhere...It only leads me to believe they must have an agenda... or tone deaf.....reminds me of my wife when she notices a pretty woman, she will turn and say something like, good grief did you see her ugly shoes. and those jeans make her look so cheap. Wink!
Did I see a round one for a banjo? If you need one of these for a banjo, you just need a new banjo. I could hear a difference with headphones. Closed my eyes. When I thought I heard the difference I’d open them. Always opened them at a change.
"It keeps the back away from my body" , as he wraps his arm around the side and more importantly the sound board!! Maybe i should put my acoustic on a stand and not touch it with anything but a pick or my nails.
I liked the sound without one better. Less bright but more warm. Depending on the sound I was going for I would use them or not. Honestly the difference is pretty minor tho.
I appreciate all the info but it would be nice if you would demo the stuff first or something. I feel it should be 70% demo 30 to 20% talk. I feel these videos flip that model
the back and sides of the body are normally made with heavier wood....because they dont move. The top is what resonates...that is the design of the instrument sooooooooooooooo i call BS. Pet Rock section of the store.
That is true but dampening the back does effect the loudness & tone of the instrument, certainly not as much as dampening the top would. In the room the difference was pretty dramatic, definitely listen to one in person if you get the chance!
If I’m being 💯 honest… I don’t hear a difference, and I always watch RUclips with my PA hooked up to the tv. I guess it’s more evidence that the top is doing the majority of the sound work.
It’s a small difference but noticeable. It’s the equivalent of when you have a bit too much of your arm laying on the top and the sound is muted slightly.
TV speaker are developed to reduce both high and low frequencies to center towards the human voice. They aren’t a good representation of the entire frequency range. Try listening with good headphones. Or simply try holding your acoustic guitar close against your stomach and then pull it away from you, not touching your body. You will hear a difference.
I must be deaf because I'm hearing very very little difference,Not impressed I didn't hear no difference,And I've listened and listened and tried hard to hear a difference,I so far am not interested.
Thanks guys, I didn't even know these existed! The first thing I noticed was the resonance on the mandolin, holy cow that made a big difference. The guitar got louder, very obvious, and the depth of tone was really induced. good stuff. Keep on smiling.

Man that's crazy awesomeness I've been playing guitar for 30yrs and never even thought about this
Instantly heard the difference. I didn’t know something like that existed. 👍

Very clear tonal sound with it on there. So the volume was increased by quite a bit 🤔 Great video. 👍

thank you for this extra dosage of placebo to help sell their gimmick. I hope they paid you well.

Nice point!

Yeah, I didn't know if it was needed the whole time, thanks for the feedback!
I believe the difference would also be dependent on the specific instrument. I have some mandolins that the tonegard does nothing for and others that it’s a game changer having it on.

I have one on my mandolin, it does make a difference. I have thought about trying one on my D18 but haven't shelled out the doe for one yet.
It's at least worth a try if you get the chance!
I could detect a little difference on the guitar, but could not on the Mandolin. Thanks.
The thing that struct me the most is how it allowed you to hold the instrument. Looked a lot more comfortable when you were sitting down..
For sure!
I want one of these for my mcpherson sable but they don’t make one for that guitar.
Unfortunately they do not, but maybe one day they will accommodate smaller body guitars!
Future guitarists and mandolinists will get a good chuckle out of our use of tone guards, I think. Hey, where's the Le'bra you bought for your Mazda Miata? Ya still got it?
Does the Dreadnought style Tone Gard fit on an Eastman E20D? Thank you!
If it fits on other Dreads it will fit on the Eastman.
Absolutely it will!
I didn't hear much difference sitting but standing it definitely helped it a lot
I've just tried this idea on my Walden D351 dreadnought... and by holding the guitar away from my body I can hear more volume and definitely a better low end sound... however I also recorded it on my tablet and could only just hear a slight tone difference.... Is there one for a resonator banja?
There is not one that fits a resonator, but maybe Tone-Gard will expand on that one day!
The concept makes sense. Did the video capture what you're hearing in the room, maybe not so much. All I could hear was a slight increase in volume. Would love to give one a try, though.
Definitely true, the in person experience isn't quite the same, especially on mandolin, these are such a clear upgrade.
Well put!
Have you seen the ARC armrest that JP Cormier reviewed? I would love to see how these two items would work together to allow the top and back to vibrate!
When I play seated I always try to hold the guitar away from my body as much as possible. It does make a difference. I cannot do that standing.
King of the road......❤🎶
👀👍👍 Didn't know they make Tone Gards for dreads! How about OMs? Definitely a MUST for mandolin players. Thx, love you guys.
They unfortunately don't at the moment. Thanks for watching!
I see a second benefit: less sweating! I perspire with my guitar against my pendulous belly, and this looks like it will help that!
Totally!
Only point of reference I have is to lift my instrument away from my body which with wearing the strap is held high on my body breast hight. So if I lift the instrument from my body which I never thought to try before now; well just to say there is a huge difference in tone. There is a difference, but not significant enough to make me want one.
That's fair!
I agree! However, I will spend $50 on a good pick.
Come on. You can't expect to get the full effect based on only a RUclips video and played back on your phone. I bought one of these for my Guild 12 string, and the difference was considerable.
I've been wondering why these weren't available for guitars.
Look no further!
Wow. Guitar just comes alive with the tone guard. Much better bass response, better ring out on the upper strings, more dynamic range. Impressive.
Wink!
I've seen other kinds of braces to hold the guitar away from your body, but they are big and bulky. these seem nice and simple.
im sure its compression, my speakers and my bad hearing but i cant really hear a difference
It's much more dramatic in person!
2 inch. Pvc works to
Feels like a paid advertisement that runs at 3 am vs a Legit Yt video
Opened both instruments up
Sure it did. 🙄
@@TAYLORFAN50 yes, it did.

The round one is actually for open back banjos!
"It keeps the back away from my body" , as he wraps his arm around the side and more importantly the sound board!!
Maybe i should put my acoustic on a stand and not touch it with anything but a pick or my nails.
i believe an armrest on an acoustic would have a more dramatic tonal difference than one of these. but that's my $0.02.
Hold the guitar away from your gut, or get rid of your gut?
Now you need an armrest to keep your arm away from the soundboard.
Yes, our fat bellys are terrible tone dampers. Anything that keeps them off our precious instruments is a good thing. I'm gonna look into this.
I liked the sound without one better. Less bright but more warm. Depending on the sound I was going for I would use them or not. Honestly the difference is pretty minor tho.
$uper trailer for $ale or Rent 🤠
I like the roll cage too, the general lee had one installed also
I appreciate all the info but it would be nice if you would demo the stuff first or something. I feel it should be 70% demo 30 to 20% talk. I feel these videos flip that model

Not enough to care about !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I’m being 💯 honest… I don’t hear a difference, and I always watch RUclips with my PA hooked up to the tv. I guess it’s more evidence that the top is doing the majority of the sound work.
Better speakers might help. I got one and it makes a nice difference on dreadnought or grand auditorium.
It’s a small difference but noticeable. It’s the equivalent of when you have a bit too much of your arm laying on the top and the sound is muted slightly.

On the instrument you're playing there is a big difference in volume
