you guys gotta get ryan back on. he only went 10% into his history of skating. lets hear about the downtown party scene back then. more about why he stopped skating. the time he told billy that skateboarding was cooler than rollerblading. nine eleven. his thoughts on "all the streets are silent" the movie that came out about nyc skateboard scene in early 90s. i know he moved in those cicles so just wanna hear him tell more stories.

crazy that by the time mindgame came out people like ryan were already done skating. it’s like he belongs to an entirely different era and form of skating. truly an icon of the sport that has been forgotten by the modern age.

We created the PISS (Parsons Inline Skate Series) contest in Queens in 95 or 96. About 80 people showed up one day, but we were hoping Ryan or other FR skaters would show up. It was all word of mouth back then.

Also started in 92... Around 16 min mark they talk about Macroblades and microblades. The Macro’s were better than TRS but not as expensive as Coolblades or Aeroblades.
Micro’s were the kid skates. Cheap and small.
Macro’s, Cool’s, and Aero’s cost more than TRS but they were essentially expensive aerobic fitness skates. Aero/Cool would fit up to 80mm wheels. They were very fast and light weight.
TRS were heavy. Thick. And I think maxed out with 72mm wheels.
Then came grinding, Tarmac CE’s, Majestic 12’s etc. Same “Lightning” style angled boot, but came with smaller wheels for grinding.
The grinding scene was new. Fun. Risky... But I’ve gotta say... It was so much more fun blazing fast across town with those 80mm wheels, flying over gaps and having a blast.
It’s like all the vandalism that came with wax and grinding is when communities started rejecting us. Signs went up and all the rest.
To this day I skate. Take my young kids to the local park which rarely has anyone on inlines.
I also have some big wheel blades. Fast again! Lovin them! 42 y/o with 110’s flying down the road.
    I’ll keep skating until I can’t anymore!

Ryan Jacklone seemed a little bit subdued. He didn't come across as charismatic as he did back in the day, although he warmed up a little towards the end. I was hoping for some classic stories because I have no doubt in my mind he was up to all sorts of trouble in his youth, but they never materialised....bit he did let a couple slip near the end.
It seemed a little odd that you guys didn't ask Ryan what he is doing with himself these days. What does he do for work? Does he have a family? We didn't learn anything about what Ryan's current life.
Ryan Jacklone sponsored Ryan Many with Regalia clothing - Ryan Many talks about it in his Wheel Scene interview.
Dayton Coopersmith's disaster back backslide broken ankle is in Quest For The Holy Rail, I think.
The helmet Ryan Jacklone used to wear that looked like a fireman's helmet were called Rocksplitters and he appeared in one of their adverts. A friend of mine bought one solely based on that advert.

    Unbeatable quotes throughout! FNA
"Following good skaters that could see good lines"
    "Getting air awareness"
"I guess we'll just weld some pipe in there"
"Black and blue and red all over!"
    "540 nosepick"
"... and the deck was just gone."
    "Shout out Zima time."
"I was there to skate... and I wasn't worried about what other people were doing."
"You get a nickname for the reason you get it."
"Start small and then go big... learn each step."
"This is a share and hang..." "That's what we do."
I still have one of my Jacklone wrist guards. Palm shredded with pads missing and hard as a rock. Ha. Another fantastic episode. Thank you.

Interesting hearing about the South Bronx. I used to go to some sketchy areas in London when I used to skate with a group of people. One of the best skateparks in the UK, I call it Playstation as that is what it used to be called. Outside that park is a very rough area and I remember two weeks in a row there was a stabbing outside the fence. But on neither occasion did I feel scared because it was some gang shit among locals there. It's weird how when you are in places like that they recognise you are not a local and leave you alone. Some of the ghetto kids were funny, they'd be cheeky to us when we were literally rolling ten deep to skate all day. Good to hear these stories from Jacklone! Pretty sure the Bronx is probably twice as gnarly as anywhere in London mind you!

The first qualifier was in Long Beach, Belmont Shores. Matty qualified first, Ryan qualified second. I brought my ass out there from Utah after winning a “street” contest on my 13th birthday. Only to find out my 8 down hyper fat boys were dated because heads were doing grinds. Blew my GD mind! I have footage of Mattys qualifier somewhere and used to have some of Tom Hyser but recorded over it. I remember seeing Ryan smoking a cigarette haha and being shook that a kid puffed sticks lol. I have a super vivid memory of that day and a ton of OG stuff that Ryan wasn’t sure of that I just happened to be answering before he could or stuff he couldn’t. Ani Schemp was on VG1 and The Bottom Line and had one the illest covers in blade history, on INLINE Magazine when the issues were the size of a pizza box. I have that along with INLINE mags coverage of the first NISS qualifier. Fun fact: TJ Webber qualified first, in vert! The Riggler man, bringing me back. Thanks for having him and creating a legit platform to push the sport!

    • @Battlephrog
      @Battlephrog 3 года назад

Haha! Yes!! The pizza box sized Inline Mags. Wow, bro... Memories!
I lived in Cali and the closest indoor park was The Grind in Sacramento. I thought I was cool because I was member #69.
That park had nearly 10,000 members at its peak before eventually closing.
Backyard mini ramp. Fun box that I could drag out into the road. Launch ramps. Home-made rails. Great times!!

This was awesome, Ryan is a true OG Rollerblader! Was awesome to finally hear the story behind the 'FR' name, and I never knew Ryan had beef with the west coast. Lol. He was one of our favorite skaters growing up! At some point in time everyone in the neighborhood had K2 Fattys, iconic skate for sure. Can't believe Ryan took off his backslide plates! Lol. Okay so @1:09:14, regarding the custom K2's... you're not alone Billy! Pretty sure the Fatty Pros (in Yellow and in Red), were only for the pros at first, then later made available to the public. So what I heard back in the days (and actually saw a pair in person at the Encinitas skate park), was the K2 Fatty Pros, in Yellow (or in Red) that were issued to pros only, had a little 'star' symbol embroidered on the sides (next to the K2 logo). I'll have to ask Louie to confirm this though (he should know). That's legit Billy remembered this! Back when only the grey "shark skin" Fattys were available, we saw the pros with the red/yellow and we all wanted them!! Still to this day, every time I see Fatty Pros (in Yellow or Red), I think of that star and the myth. Lol.

Let me tell you about the OUT skate brand since you don’t seem to know a lot about it. Being French they were pretty popular here, most of my friends had them. There was two models the Poppy and the Daisy but I don’t remember the difference except for the color. They were ugly, bulky, heavy. Above a eur 42 size they look like clown shoes, you could not feel any of the grind wearing them. I personally hated them but you know ... marketing. OUT made great knee pads though, which I used for years.
