    5:36. While size is useful in a lot of ways, being shorter and having a compact build can completely expose different aspects of the game.
    Hunter Paisami 172cm 90kg
    Ngani Luamape 171cm 93kg
    Chris cloete 176cm 101kg
    Bundee Aki 178cm 101kg
    Justin Olam 178cm 92kg
    Leigh Halfpenny 175cm 84kg
    These guys combine low centre of gravity which is ideal for tackle technique, they are a smaller target which makes them harder to tackle, they have low centre of gravity which like a race car means they can maintain grip better when changing direction at speed, they have shorter legs so they can accelerate and reposition better, they have better coordination because there's less leverage forces on their limbs and less time for brain signals to instruct the muscles in their bodies.
    Being short means you can stack on muscle easier and that makes them likely to be stronger then taller players who are the same weight.

      Nonu probably belongs on that list too. I remember passing him at a pub, same height as me but literally twice as wide or more. He practically had to turn sideways to get out the door! The new tackle laws further favour the stocky builds.

    Question: As Tuitupou said, the European men are much bigger and stronger with an emphasis on bulk. We saw that in 2019 v. England and v. France last year. I understand skill set is a core element of NZ DNA but the results speak for themselves that without bulk and front foot ball, our backs can’t use their skill set and we tend to lose. Is this something we simply have to learn to deal with like Japan under Eddie Jones? Do we have players who can play this style or will we always be restricted by this limitation?

    • @Saiyan4eva
      @Saiyan4eva Год назад +3

      Much bigger & stronger! The Polynesian race of Samoan, Tongan, Māori, Hawaiian etc are some of the most physically gifted athletes in the world & Aotearoa NZ being made up of Poly heritage we as a people love the physicality why we do well in League & rugby, where it's a problem is NZ rugby tend to lean more on skill factor, mobility, athleticism & speed of play why we have leaner players but the games always evolving & now you need to get the balance right & have them bigger players maybe the boys might need to lift more & put on more muscle instead of cutting!

    • @richardwigglesworth1986
      @richardwigglesworth1986 Год назад +2

      @@Saiyan4eva I somewhat disagree. We have players like Caleb Clarke, Akira, Milner-Skudder, Sivivatu even Lomu who love the physicality of ATTACK but don't like the physicality of defence... Remember last year when Asafo Aumua ran the ball from 10 meters out directly at Akira Ioane and Ioane didn't even make an attempt, Ioane saw Aumua coming and looked at the fly half to make the tackle instead allowing Aumua to score. We have had a track record of big men who are great on offense but can't make dominant tackles. Why? Honestly, I think our big men are missing the inner mongrel it takes to commit on defense. Whether it is because people from the Island nations are very peaceful and humble and it is not naturally in their DNA I am not sure but we simply don't have that ferocity other teams do.
      A great example is Ardie who has the most mongrel I've ever seen. He produces highlights like he is the biggest man in the forward pack, often he is the smallest. Imagine if he was actually 110kg~ like the Northern Hemisphere men. If you are looking for an example of size and mongrel, look no further than Jerome Kaino.

    An observation, I don’t think the Crusaders are getting the same connection on attack and defence with their current crop of halfbacks. They aren’t creating options of their own, aren’t drawing in defenders and don’t worry the ball runners coming their way.
