Hey, for easy accenting of the recessed area's look into gunpla panel lining. Same technique on a larger work piece. First Gloss coat your paint job. Then use black gloss enamel and thinner mix and let capillary action fill in the lines. Use thinner on a paper towel afterwords to clean up anything you goofed on. So fast and looks great.
Not sure if you guys reply to comments, but do you apply primer after wet sanding at 400 grit? I just finished wet sanding and it's very smooth but I'm scared that the primer might ruin that
My wife is fan of Samus Aran! she have been telling me to make her a full armor Samus suit! with this now she won't let me even sleep!!! LOL! thanks guys! You are amazing as always... 😃
It's awesome seeing how close knit the 3D printing community is. Hearing each person reference other youtubers and getting inspiration from each other is inspiring. Can't wait to get my own printer
I've watched this video at least 20 times because the techniques are so dang helpful. I especially appreciate the explanation and use of the epoxies for creating sturdier layering.
Such a Fantastic video, I hope you never take it down, that way it can help other people as much as it has helped me. After seven months of studying and applying the techniques in this video to armor crafting, I'm now helping people with their armor and the money I'm making has transformed my life! I even received a promotion at my career job where I'm the majordomo for 3d printing and finishing prototypes.
large PLA prints Do warp this is the chief cause of your issue even with good adhesion to the print surface. this caused what joe indicated. Part warps causng nozzle to touch previous layers. this causes the x/y axis motors to become overload and skip steps which cause the miss-aligned layers. It also caused your print to detach from the supports. I printed a deadspace healmet i modeled in tinkercad/meshmixer. and i had to break it down in several parts to avoid this issue.
i saw someone print a entire helmet with a holo sphere inside the helmet. a sphere doesnt require any infill because of the nature of the shape and so you can basically print a helmet with mostly a void inside and then supports around that. Saves you a bunch of time, filament, cleanup if you do it this way. While i havent personally tried this trick i saw someone do it with a black panther mask and it cut down their print time and material significantly.
This sound like a great idea! Also, not making fun or anything but I totally imagined a holographic sphere when I first read this. Maybe a cosplay idea for Simply Nailogical
this video was a work of art in itself.. helmet looked great, and the voice over.. man, it was like the most engagement training video I've ever seen. It had all of the safety warnings without sounding annoying about it, and a lot of things that made me go "oh yeah, i should have known that, but I wasn't thinking about it". Thank you!
If you ever print anything else in HIPS try giving plastic model glues a try. From experience they are much stronger than super glue. They basically chemically fuse polystyrene parts together. Strongest bond I have ever seen in an adhesive.
We got some of that glue! The model glue worked great for gluing styrene to styrene. But when I tried styrene to the Z-HIPS, the glue never cured and the high impact polystyrene filament got all mushy. That was just one, quick test, though, before I switched to superglue.
Usually plastic models are made from ABS, so this plastic model glue really only works well on ABS, not really great for Styrene. I would also suggest being very light with the glue as it is meant to melt plastics together rather than stick them together.
this video is like a god send i have been torn between two cosplays to be my next make .... samus or the fallout4 t-51 power suit. i love watching your videos when working on projects, they keep me motivated.
@@punishedprops I can't find the rotary tool you used - you linked to the Dremel 4000 (which I have already) but the one you used is like a weird handheld version and it looks battery powered!

We killed their dremel 2 seconds. Nice, they turn up grab the equipment and brutally murder it in cold electronic rage! * Crowd forms outside the lair with led torches and EVA foam pitchforks chanting for a Styrofoam head on a platter *.
This was an amazing tutorial, thank you so much, Brittany!!!! I was super impressed by the visor trick with alcohol and a thin coating of the silver paint. It turned out AMAZING in the final photographs of the completed costume! You guys (Bill helped with the visor~) did an amazing job!!
do you have any idea how well the silver coating would block light from inside? For instance if you wanted to mount EL wire or LEDs to armor and then add a silvered, colored dome on top, could you still see the glow?
Brittany - Great project! Please consider working over a tarp or dropcloth to collect dust when sanding outside. The fine plastic, epoxy, and paint particulate can easily be washed into and contaminate your nearby aquatic environments by rain and other runoff
Absolutely loved this video! Very clear on what you are doing and why, good music and voice over, cool project, it's got it all. Super high quality, keep it up!
The Zortrax m200 is actually one of the best consumer grade 3d printers available . Its print quality is ridiculously awesome compared to every other printer . Unfortunately it's also very expensive and so is its material . If I had the money I would get one .
i own 5 m200s, they are by far 1 of my best printers but they can be princesses, i own about 30 printers in total though and have tested out a ton more
Wow you have some amazing skills, if it had been me id have thrown ou the damaged part yet you were able to perfectly work it back in even though it was damaged and oddly shaped... very impressive.
Awesome job on the paint finish Brit 👍 I used to prime and sand MDF all day long at my old job, trying to make it look perfect. So I know just how much time and effort you put in to this 😄
For future reference, use a thin sponge whenever hand sanding. It will prevent you from accidentally sanding finger shaped grooves into the piece, and it will conform easily around curves. Also a few drops of dish soap in the water will prevent the sandpaper from packing up and adds a little extra lubrication
You can plastic weld it together and then sand. Way more sturdy! I did it a few times when fixing my motorcycle fairings and they stand up to high speed aerodynamics Awesome video
That was so amazing!! I love this helmet... you are so talented and a true Maker, sometimes things don't come out as you planned but you just go with it. You are such a inspiration to me... Thanks and keep it up!
13:14 What we used to do on Gundam / mecha model kits for all the lines where armor plates and panels go together it was easier to use a fine tip sharpie to get the black lines.

Not sure if you should make it in one go, always smart too do three or four parts. Also a small hand grinder can help you with that hard to get fillers. Great video, keep up the goods 👍
Keep in mind, instead of trying to 3D print something to match your hand sanded and filled shape, you can print it flat, and work it into shape using a heat gun. PLA is pretty easy to work under heat (just make sure to wear gloves, it gets hot).

Brown spots are probably caused by the nozzle dragging and pickling up filament and burning. That would also cause a layer shift as well.
Good to know!

Great choice of material and treatment for the visor. It complements all the hard work on that helmet perfectly.
Wow that is so sharp. Great job.
Your skills and patience are amazing
shifts like the one in your failed print happen when the belts skip a notch. i think that usually happens when they arent tight enough
Thanks, I'll check the belt tightness.
It also happens when you go to the very edge and your printer runs into the side. It throws the whole print off in one axis.
