Thanks for this, had never heard of these bluetooth OBD dongles before but having watched your video I bit the bullet and ordered one from eBay. Must admit at £2.39 inc P&P from Hong Kong I wasn't expecting much. Well it's just arrived, exactly a week after ordering and following your instructions connected right up to my phone. Currently only running the freeware version of Torque to ensure it works but will upgrade to the pro version ASAP. Amazing bit of kit for the price!
For me it's an invaluable window into what's happening in the engine or more importantly, what the computer THINKS is happening. You can diagnose and solve all manner of running issues and test components often without even lifting the bonnet. If you look through my Playlist entitled "Cars" you'll see a couple of testing videos to get you started and more will be coming. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
+SiRobb Yes, I'm impressed with this little tool and so cheap! I'm running Torque Pro now but been unable to find the correct PID to display coolant temp. My car's a 2004 Volvo S60 D5 so presumably very similar to yours, what PID did you use for coolant if you don't mind me asking?
+enpeemac Hi. If you long press to add a display, a list of available sensors will come up. They're in alphabetical order and coolant is under "E" because it's classed as an Engine Coolant Temperature sensor or ECT. Hope that helps.
+SiRobb Hi, yes I tried that when I was first playing with it but get no data from that PID. Tried every other PID pertaining to coolant temp, including the custom ones for Ford etc but still no joy. All other PIDs that I'd expect to work with my car do and no issues that I know of with the ECT sendor, ie the gauge works fine. Strange isn't it!
Shaky video, but I just want to thank you, regardless. Looked up several videos, but for initial set up for Torque, yours is the best I've found so far. A thanks from across the pond.
Nice video, good job. I have the same OBD2 reader and same app (torque pro) and my car is a Fiat Punto 1.2 8v from 2001. The OBD2 connects and shows in the app, Bluetooth signal on but it shows a message that it can't connect to ECU. Could you help me with any idea our tip? I realise that my radio is aftermarket and the fuse its share between radio and the port reader. Does it help this information? Many thanks in advance.
I'm guessing things have changed in the last few years, But I found if I do as you say and connect my phone to bluetooth first ,I can not get the app to work, now I just plug in, open the app and let the app connect with bluetooth then it works perfectly.
Many times just opening Torque is enough but sometimes I have to have Torque open then unplug and plug back in the ELM327 and the pair option appears. I can always get it to work just not by the same method every time.
