I have played a lot of splendor and have seen already two other non-sponsored videos for this game and this video is the best as far as describing the set up and how the game works very quickly. You are also the only one who did not ridicule reserving a blind card with a gold. I have played a lot of splendor, including many games with sharks who will regularly beat me in under 15 minutes, and where reserving blind is a part of the game. not every game but definitely it shows up often.
Well, I avoid reviewing. Things I like might not be the same thing someone else would, and vice-versa. I prefer to just show exactly how the game works and then you can see if it lines up with your particular tastes - glad you liked the video!
Hype! I love it when they create these "duel" editions of already fantastic games. Not only is the tension usually higher, and the gameplay often different, but it's much easier to get in games in my home.
After probably about 150 plays of Splendor I'm absolutely ready for this new take on the game! 💎 Thanks as always for the fantastic rules teach, Rodney!

Played this today, using Your explanation and rules book, can’t go wrong! Thanks. PS I wonder why the designers reduced the card size in this 2 player game? The same happened in 7 wonders duel .
A great video, as usual! I also jusdt got the game and played it. While I was playing I noticed something which isn't covered at all in the rules: Grey cards without bonuses. It doesn't say if they all go in a seperate column, or each in its own... Actually the rules don't mention cards without bonuses at all.
Followed up with the publisher. Grey cards that don't have the "wild" effect, do not go into any of the columns, and only count towards the 20 point victory condition (they do not create their own color column that you can use to win for the 10 point victory condition). Hope that helps!
Enjoyed every second of this! :) Would you recommend me getting Splendor or Splendor Duel as a first game? Gonna play it with the wife mostly, but perhaps sometimes a few more people as well, so I'm wondering how much better (or is it better even) is Duels compared to regular Splendor when there are 2 people playing ?
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not - but hopefully the videos here give you a sense of what might fit your tastes best!
Great video, Rodney! I have one question that’s been discussed on many forums already: do bonuses act as a discounts before or after purchasing new cards with tokens? In other words: do you spend your tokens first, and then count your bonuses towards the remaining gem cost of the card you want to purchase? Or do you discount the gem cost of the card you want to purchase with your bonuses, and then spend any remaining amount of gems with your tokens? In this video you use the latter example, but I’ve heard some people say that in some tournaments it’s the other way around. I can also imagine a game where someone can hoard all the blue tokens for example, by saving up enough blue bonuses to never have to spend their tokens. Resulting in a major disadvantage for the other player. What’s your take on this?
Two questions: 1) can you reserve the top card of a deck of cards instead of taking one from the Display? 2) do you need to do the optional rules in order or can I first replenish then take a chip?
1. Yes, you can reserve the top card from any deck (rulebook pg 6). 2. Optional actions must be taken in the order listed. First, you may return any number of Privileges and take that number of tokens. Then, you may replenish the game board. You can't do them in the reverse order (pg 4).
Hi, Rodney. Love your videos. Quick rules question: do the optional actions have to take place in order (spend privilege then replenish) if you decide to do both? Or can you replenish first?
This seems like a must have. Splendor is easy to teach, fast to play and still intresting after a while. The two player version seems deeper even better (maybye harder to learn but still).
Hi Rodney, thought I had tis game sorted, but I have a grey topped card with no gem token in top right corner, and a 3 points value top left, I don’t know where to place the card ? Which colour does it go with? Thanks.
Followed up with the publisher. Grey cards that don't have the "wild" effect, do not go into any of the columns, and only count towards the 20 point victory condition (they do not create their own color column that you can use to win for the 10 point victory condition). Hope that helps!
Thanks for the great tutorial. One question came up when we played. What about the gem cards that don’t have a bonus gem or the “match any gem” option in the upper right corner? They are the grey cards and you laid one out in the top row of your tutorial. We got one and didn’t know if the points are applied in any gem row or none. It was important for us because one of us went for the 10pts in one gem category win option.
Because it doesn't have a colored gem, it's not part of any of the colored sets - it just provides the points printed on it (but doesn't count as it's own column or anything)
Great video! One question: if I have a privilege and use it to take one pink pearl from the board as an optional step and then I take mandatory step and take 3 tokens in a row which include another pink pearl which means that now I have two pearls from optional and mandatory steps does my opponent get a privilege?
The Optional and Mandatory steps are treated separately. If you gained 2 pearls from the Mandatory step itself, then they'd gain a privledge, but in the case you describe, they wouldn't.
Question regarding 10 max tokens at end of turn. If you pick up a few tokens on a turn, say a red and green for a total of 12 tokens, then at the end of your turn you need to return 2 tokens. Does this mean that you can return any color? In essence, this is like trading token colors. Is this right/allowed? This one thing has tripped me up in this and in the original version. Thank you for your remarkable videos-❤
Wow!! I’m surprised that this is allowed, but then again, this ability lends itself to being another gaming strategy, if you want different color tokens! Thank you for the reply!
when it's your turn and there are only 3 chips left, say two whites and one red, are you able to take all three? If there are three white left may you take all three? Is there a limit as to how many noble cards one can have? Great game.
Hi Suzanne, as long as you're following the rules for taking chips (for example, if they are all in an unbroken row), than yes, you could take all three. For Nobles, you gain one, once you have 3 crowns, and a second if you gain 6 crowns. There isn't a way to gain another royal, so in that way, there's a limit to how may you can have... but it's more that there's a limit on the number of ways to get them, if you know what I mean. Hope that helps!
Can you tell me why you would put a grey card with the gem bonus symbol onto the grey card with the 6? I don’t understand why you would do that, but maybe I’ve missed out on something. Wouldn’t be the first time in this game 😅
If you're referring to 14:25 in the video - that was me discussing the benefit of having a certain number of crown symbols (not really meaning to suggest how that card would be used in an actual game situation, where you wouldn't put it on a grey card). Sorry if that caused any confusion.
You'll notice that has no gem in the to right hand corner. It doesn't belong to one of the color groups - it's just worth the 6 points printed on it, and a wild cannot be placed on it (since the wild would have no gem color to copy).
So taking an optional action does not count as an action? So you can refill the board as an optional action, then take from the board as your main action?
Hi Rodney, for the optional actions, can you replenish THEN spend a scroll to take a token? Ie, are the optional actions on the player aid ORDERED or UNORDERED? Sorry, my game is in Chinese, i have to come here
On your turn, you first perform none, one, or both of the optional actions (in the indicated order). Then, you must perform one mandatory action. Hope that helps!
For the optional phase, if I would like to choose both optional actions (spend privilege scroll & replenish the board), do I have to perform optional action no: 1 first the optional action no. 2 ? Can I perform optional action 2 first then optional action 1 ?
I'm not sure how the 6 bonus card that costs 8 diamonds works. Is it a wild card that can be assigned to a stone tableau or is it stand-alone? I saw you put a wild card on top of it, which confused me even more. Thanks.
Are you referring to the grey cards? Those are just standalone when they only show points on them. The second one I bring on screen at that point you're referring to was just put them on top of each other as a way of organizing them in that shot, but actually, that second one I brought into the shot had the multi-gem symbol, so really (in a proper game situation), should have gone on top of one of the other stacks, as previously explained for those types of cards.
Question here: you said your two optional actions could be taken, but is there a rule to the order? If you have 3 scrolls and you wanna use one and then refill the board, is that okay?
I don't have the rulebook in front of me, but I was sure that the first optional action allows you to spend A privilege, and not as much as you have.. i may be wrong. Edit: actually on 5:00 minute mark of this video, the rule book states spend 1 privilege.
I had to do some work to figure out what you were getting at here (I made some guesses, because this comment doesn't detail why you are asking this question, so if I've gotten it wrong, please let me know). I think what you're getting at, is that at 2:39, I discuss an optional action that lets you spend 1 privledge to take 1 non-gold token. But then later in the video 2:55, I say that you can return more than 1 privledge token to resolve that action multiple times. The problem is that the back of the rule book page that I show at 2:39 is a summary of the rules, not the full rules. It's just a player aid - it doesn't give all the details. If you go to the full rules, you'll find it says: "Return 1 or more Privileges to their place above the board. For each Privilege returned, take 1 Gem or Pearl token of your choice from the board.". The video is detailing the full rules of the game, so it will contain more details than you'll find on the Player Aid. The player aid is just meant to be a visual reminder of the full rules. It probably would have been helpful is they had included some additional wording on the Player Aid to prevent that confusion. However, if you are trying to figure out why I'm teaching something a particular way, you'll want to refer to the full rules, not just the player aid. I hope that helps clear it up. Have fun playing!
I'm a bit confused by the question, as you can only play this game with 2 players. Can you give me a time tamp to the section of the video you are finding unclear, and then detail your question so I can give you more direct help?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Found it. I watched your video, purchased the game... Then read the rules at one. But in the German translation of the rules it is only stated, that gold chips could be used as a chip of any color. So to me it wasn't clear if this includes pearls or not. Me and my gf actually played it as the following. If one were to use a gold chip as a pearl the other one were to receive a privalage...
What if on your turn, you are limited already with 10 gems, you don't have a scroll, and you cannot purchase a card? The rulebook does not specify. Me and my wife played this way: we take extra gems (goes over 10 limit) then discard the ones we don't need in order to prepare for a purchase in the next turn.
You'll find this covered here: ruclips.net/video/h8dhfJGspJI/видео.html (you can have more than 10 gems "during" your turn, so if you start with 10 gems, you can still collect more - it's only at the end of your turn that you have to discard down).
@@WatchItPlayed I am aware. But if you have 10 gems at the beginning of the round, optional actions are unavailable, and I have to choose only 1 mandatory action. I don't have enough to purchase a card. I can't pick up gems because I'll go over 10 and then I can't spend them because I cannot pick up gems and spend them on a card during that same turn. The only way you can go over 10 and spend them is if you have a scroll that you can use for an extra gem in order to purchase a card after that. Sorry if I'm not coming through clear.
@@nedeljkodukic7279 We might be misunderstanding each other a bit. If you start your turn and can't buy a card, but have 10 gems, it probably means you need a different combination of gems. You are saying "I can't pick up gems because I'll go over 10", but as I explained above, you "can" pick up gems and go over 10, but at the end of your turn, you'll have to discard back down to ten. So on a turn like this, you would pick up the gems you do need for a purchase, and then, at the end of your turn you'll have to discard back down to ten gems (and you'll choose to get rid of gems you don't need). Then on your next turn you'll then hopefully have the gems you need to make the purchase you want to make. If you don't, then you'll need to pick up more gems (and discard after again). If the board doesn't have any of the gems you need, then as your optional action, you should choose to refill the board, so you can have better options. I'm basically repeating what you said in your first post that you and your wife decided to do, but that's also what the rules allow you to do ;) I just wanted to help make that clear (since it seemed like you thought it wasn't allowed).
@@WatchItPlayed that's exactly what I thought. I thought I was doing something wrong or was not allowed, but it actually makes sense now that you said it that way. Thanks for clearing that up in my mind 😁. Love your work. Cheers.
Regarding the Optional actions: On your turn, you first perform none, one, or both of the optional actions (in the indicated order). Then, you must perform one mandatory action.
When choosing to do both of the optional actions can they be done in any order?

Hey Rutger, the way I present it in the video is the official ruling - hope that helps!
Two questions:
1) can you reserve the top card of a deck of cards instead of taking one from the Display?
2) do you need to do the optional rules in order or can I first replenish then take a chip?
1. Yes, you can reserve the top card from any deck (rulebook pg 6).
2. Optional actions must be taken in the order listed. First, you may return any number of Privileges and take that number of tokens. Then, you may replenish the game board. You can't do them in the reverse order (pg 4).

@@WatchItPlayed thank you so much!!
This seems like a must have. Splendor is easy to teach, fast to play and still intresting after a while.
The two player version seems deeper even better (maybye harder to learn but still).
Hey, glad you enjoyed what you saw Peter!
Thanks for the video. Could you clarify what is the purpose of the spiral? Is it only used during board refill?
That's exactly it!
@@WatchItPlayed thanks Rodney, think it should be in the rule book though.
@@johnchapman1649 Oh yes, it certainly should be - something they are likely to add in the next printing.
I just popped in to say that when you're half-awake, the cover to this game in a thumbnail looks like someone is holding up a yellow frog.
lol, I think I can see what you mean - which means I'll never un-see it.
Thanks a lot for quick answer!
@@TheBojanasumarac A pleasure to assist!
You can return any of the tokens you have (you don't have to return the most recent ones you took, for example).
At 14:20 What color is the card giving 6 prestige points? What happens when you put the wild card on it right after?
You'll notice that has no gem in the to right hand corner. It doesn't belong to one of the color groups - it's just worth the 6 points printed on it, and a wild cannot be placed on it (since the wild would have no gem color to copy).
Do the poker chips feel like the nice ones in the first Splendor printing?
I believe they are a little smaller, but they are the same quality, from what I can tell.
So taking an optional action does not count as an action? So you can refill the board as an optional action, then take from the board as your main action?
You've got it!
How many cards can you have in reserve? Did I miss that part?
You might have :) I’m travelling right now and can’t easily check for you, but if there’s a limit I promise you it’s mentioned in the video!
@@WatchItPlayed thanks
Can you still collect gold token if you already have 3 reserved cards ?
Nope. You can't take that action if you already have 3 reserved cards, and gaining the gold is part of that action.
For the optional phase, if I would like to choose both optional actions (spend privilege scroll & replenish the board), do I have to perform optional action no: 1 first the optional action no. 2 ? Can I perform optional action 2 first then optional action 1 ?
Hi Evan, you must do them in the indicated order.
@@WatchItPlayed thank you for the information
Do the standard gray cards without the multi color bonus just count towards your total 20 points?
Depends on what symbols they have. Some provide points, some attach to other colors to become that color (and provide that color bonus).
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you!
Question here: you said your two optional actions could be taken, but is there a rule to the order? If you have 3 scrolls and you wanna use one and then refill the board, is that okay?
On your turn, you first perform none, one, or both of the optional actions (in the indicated order). Then, you must perform one mandatory action.
@@WatchItPlayed K thanks, I was wondering why anyone would refill without taking a chip first if you have all 3 scrolls, but this makes sense.
Are the new gems smaller then the old ones.
I always liked to play with the old ones in my hand
They are smaller, but otherwise the same material.
Alright
Once agaim, you are totally right. I got confused by the player aid. Thanks!
@@nedeljkodukic7279 You bet!
@@WatchItPlayed i mean isn't the purpose of the player aid is to aid the player and not confuse him 😃
@@nedeljkodukic7279 That would be ideal! 😆
Can I take just 1 gem as part of mandatory action (without using the privilege token) ?
Hi Kishore, I’m just travelling right now, so I’m not near my copy of the game to check, sorry!
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks Rodney - Have a safe and happy journey
@@kishorepurohit8010 Aw, thanks!!
When does this release?
I guess that will depend on where you live, but I did see it for sale in Canada.
It's for sale at my LGS right now.
How many coins to put out to start the game for only tqo players? It's very confusing.
I'm a bit confused by the question, as you can only play this game with 2 players. Can you give me a time tamp to the section of the video you are finding unclear, and then detail your question so I can give you more direct help?
Any reason why pearl was introduced?
Good question, but that's probably more of a question for the designers.
Can gold coins be used as perls?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Found it.
I watched your video, purchased the game...
Then read the rules at one.
But in the German translation of the rules it is only stated, that gold chips could be used as a chip of any color.
So to me it wasn't clear if this includes pearls or not.
Me and my gf actually played it as the following. If one were to use a gold chip as a pearl the other one were to receive a privalage...
@@jujurinka6719 Have a great time playing!
Cheers.
