i3 Comparison: Prusa i3 MK3 vs Cocoon Create Touch vs CTC i3 Pro B

  • The Prusa i3, being popular and open source, has spawned many clones and derivitives. In this video we compare the latest and greatest Prusa MK3 with two of its 'children'. One is relatively affordble and well respected, the other is the cheapest and nastiest available on eBay.
    Is the genuine Prusa i3 worth twice as much as the Aldi Cocoon Create Touch 3D printer and four times as much as the CTC i3 Pro B? To help you decide, I examine the printers in terms of buying experience, after sales support, assembly, components, first prints, capabilities, materials, safety and modding.

    Great review. My requirement, due some physical disabilities, was a printer that worked, out of the box with minimal fuss. Although I’m a qualified electronics engineer I now struggle with the practical stuff. I tried two Chinese printers that promised to meet those needs both failed within a month. They weren’t a cheap option either. After my deliberation and nearly quitting the hobby I went for a Prusa MK3 assembled....worth every penny! Arrived in February and has printed almost every day since. I’ve burnt through almost 2km of filament according to the printer. If you have the money go for it. Unlike many I have no desire to mod it. I just want to design and print stuff. That’s what the hobby is to me but I know many others enjoy the thrill of the chase in terms of getting it going then getting it printing 👍👍

    Very good selection of printers for this sort of comparison! I worked at a Radio Shack WAY back and one of the things I learned from one of the "sales" meetings was to consider the absolute best or most expensive item in the group and ask yourself if it had extra features or other benefits that you can live without? I had ordered the mk3 but cancelled it and I mow have a monoprice select plus. I am quite pleased with my decision and the printer. Thanks for the comparison video!

    Prusa support is the best customer support I've ever dealt with. Got the printer on thursday, it arrived with a faulty Z motor, I was talking with support through the weekend, I talked to them for like 15 hours total to figure out the problem. We found it on monday morning, I got the new motor on tuesday afternoon. Since then, it prints like a charm, nothing to tinker with or worry about. It just works.
    I am never going to buy any other 3D printer, just Prusa. It's well worth the price.

    Awesome video! Thank you! A friend has the Aldi Cocoon and seems to get fairly good results (not sure if he's modded it at all yet). I've been looking at the Anet A8, which if I'm not mistaken is a "child" of the i3, is that right? Do you have anything to say about the Anet? like have you used or owned one and if so what are your thoughts and opinions, please? Awesome channel! keep up the great work! thank you! :)

      Thanks for the feedback, and for watching. I haven't used the anet but my impression is you would need mods to make it safe and reliable. It is based on i3, yes. It used to stand out because it is cheap but there are more players now. I have a Ender 3 on the way to review which I'm hearing good things about.

      Thanks for the response! awesome! And yes the net is cheap. I have a friend with one and they have done "all the mods", including firmware replacement with all the safety features you talked about. And he gets great results. So I'm leaning into that as my first because I know i have someone to lean on/learn from. :) I look forward to the Ender 3 arrival and video :)

    You can get aluminum replacements parts for the Prusa. I have done everything except the carriage, psu bracket, and control board bracket. The bear frame with aluminum parts is also a really good upgrade and my second Prusa will be using that.

    I've had three low cost printers including a threaded rod and wood i3 and since the MK3 came out, I now own three of them. No more screwing around with one issue after another. I just load the model I need and print it. I just pre-ordered a Prusa XL since the MK3's have been working very well for me. The only issue I've had are SD card slots and the rotary switch wearing out but when you can replace the entire display and reader for $5 from Ali-express in about 15 mins that's a very minor problem.

    Totally agree on you with this one, I personally own the wanhao duplicator i3 plus and recently acquired the MK3. the i3 plus once tuned is an absolute workhorse but it takes a bit of time and tinkering to get it to that stage. The MK3 is a printer which requires very little time and tinkering to get it printing high quality models (especially with the pre-built, I bought the kit) and'll continue like that with the tinyest bit of maintenance (mainly dust and wiping the PEI), although I have modified my MK3 with carbon fibre tubes and igus bearings on the X axis, photos will come soon on the Facebook group.

    I have an anycubic mega is very similar to the cocoon and one of the advantages i find of a mostly metal construction is its less of a fire risk, even the electronics are encased in a metal box. If you see the aftermath of printer fires almost always its fueled by the plastic parts of the printer melting and fueling the fire even more.

    I know this is an old video, but I would like some help with deciding on a printer. First off, the printer would be used in a project I am starting up called Santa's workshop, where we 3d print toys for kids in lower income areas as Christmas presents. And we are looking to buy a few printers, probably 4 or 5. As simple plug, play, and mass produce, what printer would you suggest, the prusa mk3 or the cocoon create? This project is being formulated into a nonprofit, and done through my college, the University of Memphis. I have watched your videos on the different 3d printers and have an ender 3 myself, but am looking for something more reliable. What might you suggest? Thank you so much

    • @AcidicVids
      @AcidicVids 5 лет назад

      Get the Prusa.. I started with a Wanhao i3 (the older non touch screen version of the cocoon). The Cocoon is nice how ever over time you'll be upgrading things for sure such as the z brace (mentioned in the video) and y axis carriage (because the thin metal of the original bends/warps) by the time your done modding it you'll have another $200 to $300 (USD) in to your printer. The Cocoon you have to manually level the bed with 4 screws (not a huge deal how ever slower). The Prusa uses a probe so it auto levels. If your looking to go on the cheaper end I'd likely look at the Ender line of printers rather then the Wanhao/Cocoon line. Also note that Prusa still updates the firmware for their older printers (they still update their mk2 firmware) where the older Cocoons/Wanhao's are no longer updated (they did update the firmware for a time but stopped after a few years)

  • @lensman5762
    @lensman5762 5 лет назад +1

    I think it is a mistake to recommend the cheapest and the worst machine which needs the most done to it before it prints, as suitable for beginners. A beginner has even less experience than money so if the printer does not function out of the box that would be the end of his 3d printing experience. Contrary to popular belief I think that the Prusa , probably the most reliable , is best suited to a beginner if budget permits, otherwise something like an Anycubic I3 Mega is the one to go for. Thanks for a very informative presentation.

    seams like you really hammered on the cheap one. just saying which cheap one is a heck of a choice, but the wire management? really? your putting yourself down there as you did it. take 15 mins and try to make it look neat, and secure in place. you left one heck of a bird nest and put that blame on trying to make money on more expensive units.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад +2

      I hammered the cheap one because of the dozen or so 3D printers I've used over the years, it is by far the worse. Fai point on the cable management. Students did assemble it so that explains it partly but the instructons and components provided for cable management were pretty average.

    If the Cocoon is that much trouble why wouldn't anyone get an Anet A8 for the same price. I have two of them and I love them. I have them both printing reliable and pretty awesome I have to say with all the modifications Iv'e done to them. There pretty maxed out except for a Bowden system. I had a lot of fun doing it and learning on the way. I just tested one of them with the chain mail and it came out perfect. I'm testing it as we speak with the Easter egg torture test at 150% and I'm testing my MonoPrice mini V2 with one at 100%. Wish me luck. I had the ctc i3 clone. My experience with it was mixed. As a printer is bullshit. I dont think I had more than 3-4 prints without something in the printer breaking off badly. At the begining I just could not get it to extrude and that, as I did not have another 3d printer, meant I could not do anything but to buy other extruder. After upgrading the extruder and a few things, the motherboard died and one fan stopped working. After that, extruder head was just bad, had steping issues and a long list of failures... However, after investing around 200$ in upgrades and some time, the printer becomes kinda ok. If you keep in mind that the CTC i3 is not a real printer but a kit for building a custom one

    You sure picked the wrong low cost machine. Anet A8 or any of the Tevo products of much better quality than the one you bought. Also you forget to mention that anyone can buy four or five of the lower cost machines, therefore the odds of you getting more than one working are much more in your favor of the low-cost machines. A lot of parts on the very expensive Prusa machine are just 3D printed Parts which can be made by any of the other printers. So your statement ” you get what you pay for is not true you're not getting four times the machine” with the Prusa.

    • @Thomas-lh4hf
      @Thomas-lh4hf 5 лет назад +1

      Ya Prusa has had firmware problems since the MK3's release, I've seen so many unhappy Prusa customers on Facebook, its almost 50/50 good to bad reviews in the last year for a product thats partially 3d printed itself, and double the price of Crealitys machines at half the build size (S4 600 $ )
      Prusa is simply the more popular machine, the more hyped machine. NOT the best by any means. Its the Honda of 3D printers. Small-Cheap.

    Prusa has one killer feature that no other 3D printer offers for MK3's price - silent printing. For those of us who don't have a spare room or garage to run it in all day long it's really worth paying extra just not to have the constant noise. My Anycubic i3 Mega while being a great printer is really noisy. I'm waiting for Prusa to sort out the early problems with MK3 and start shipping it without weeks delay to buy it.

    • @TeachingTech

      I believe it's relatively quiet even in the normal mode thanks to the components. I've got my running in a spare bedroom but living in a British home erected in the 70's the walls are paper thin so I can still hear it a little bit at night. Hopefully Prusa will get their shit together in a month or two so I can order one. :)

      I've spent countless hours upgrading my Anycubic i3 Mega. Bearings, rods, different bed carriage (mine was warped), cooling, TMC drivers and it's still far from perfect. I just discovered that my Z wobble issues are due to the lead screws not being straight and that glue in one corner of the ultrabed is letting it go, so every time I level the bed it only lasts for few days before that corner peels off a bit more. Frankly I'd rather take my kids for a walk than waste another day taking apart this chinese crap to fix it again so I ordered Prusa. My time and energy just isn't worth it.

    I agree with what you said about the mk3, and the Cocoon Create. However the CTC i3 ProB, I disagree 100%.
    It's the WORST printer for a beginner, or someone who does not have much money.
    I have multiple monoprice printers, which I think are good printers for the money, they are far FAR from a "real" 3D printer.
    To "fix" a "cheap" printer, you are looking at the same amount of money as fixing a high end one.
    All motors, all electronics, that are of "decent" quality, are what you would put on your mk3, if it breaks. I can order a full set of rods, cut to length, for 25$ on the mk3. I can order a full set of bearings for 14$.
    I can also order a full set of motors for 150$ (this includes the lead screws as they are directly mounted in the Z motors)
    These numbers might seem high. But let's compare it to what this stuff would cost to replace for the CTC.
    To replace the hot end, with one that is going to work, and not cause problems, you are looking at 50$+. (Or buying a whole bunch of cheap ones, and spending a week, testing which one works best... and still pay 25$, for a hot end that's not as good)
    Need to replace the motors? You are looking at around 15$/each. Only 1/2 the price of the mk3's. (and that don't give you a new set of lead screws!)
    My point is, maintance, upgrading, repairing, and "fixing" will be the same price on almost any of these printers.
    And regarding "first time users".
    If I gave you a lawn mower that didn't run, that I let my 10 year old take apart, and put all the parts in a bucket.
    I sell you the bucket, and say. "Yeah man, it should run fine, it didn't run smooth though. All the parts should be in there."
    How do you know where everything hows, and what it's supposed to do. How do you even know it's running right? You've never seen one before? Do you assume it's supposed to randomly rev high and low? How do you fix that? You have no idea.
    Not "new mechanic" friendly.
    I do however think the Monoprice Mini Delta, and Monoprice Mini v2, are GREAT printers for the $$.

    • @continental_drift
      @continental_drift 6 лет назад +4

      The CTC seems like a collection of parts rather than a printer, a new user would probably throw it away out of frustration. An experienced user (who would probably not buy it) would at least know what was wrong and how to fix it.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад

      I don't know that I would "fully" agree with not buying a CTC. It does have its place and like was stated in the video, is for someone that doesn't mind tinkering and spending time on it. It is a piece of junk for sure, but is also a learning tool as there is loads of information out there about upgrading it and such.
      I already owned a Taz 5 when I bought the CTC, but I did not understand all of the aspects of what makes a 3d printer not just work, but excel. Sure, I have essentially replaced every single part on the CTC and it doesn't even resemble it's former self, but now I know how to make my own printer from the ground up for $600-$700 that has more features, like auto bed leveling and the oh so sweet removable magnetic build plate. So yeah, because of the struggle with the CTC I can build a full print farm of machines that print better than a $2500 one at less than 1/3rd the price.
      If you are not buying a machine for a specific purpose that you need to work right now, then don't be afraid to start a journey that will leave you better off in the end.

      Aaron Cole see I agree. Except I'm in the process of building a printer myself. A 7 motor core XY, no cost barred on electronics, and hotend. My budget is 500$. My goal is to get the quality step between cocoon and mk3... Above mk3, 500x500x500 build volume.
      All I'm saying is when you want to learn a concept. It's easier to start from something that works.

    I had a mk3 on order but cancelled it today. The printer was released in a beta version, essentially, without enough testing or production ramp-up and inventory. They told me 6 weeks when I ordered, which I was cool with, but it keeps getting pushed back, and if you check the forums their quoted deliveries mean nothing, some people get their printers in a month, some wait 6 months.
    On top of this, there's a major inconsistent extrusion issue that is hitting a lot of people right now and Prusa has no idea what's going on, but are trying to fix it. I don't think it could be any more clear that the mk3 needed another year of development before they released it.

      I'm starting to think they have pushed the 8-bit controller too far. Prusa was in a great position to develop a 32 bit small form factor board after the success of the MK2. Prusa Research is now stuck supporting outdated technology on a newly released product. Their controller is going to be the weak link, no on board wifi and its difficult for the developers to add features to an already maxed out processor. I have respect for Joseph, and I'll be honest even with all the issues they are having I have my eye on an MK3. I know his team and the community will get the bugs worked out. They just got a little over zealous on the release of the MK3.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад +1

      8 bit will definitely be a limitation in the future if not already, hopefully they have something in the works to introduce. My impression is they are struggling with the demand of orders and rapid company growth. Hiring good new staff will alleviate the issue but that might be easier said than done. I have the extrusion issue sometimes. It's not a deal breaker for me because I mainly print functionl parts. I try to include detailed close ups so viewers can judge print quality themselves.

    • @beefy256
      @beefy256 6 лет назад

      Yeah, turned out to be a deal breaker for me because the whole reason I'm getting the printer is for wargaming terrain and tokens that have to be very detailed and sometimes quite small.
      Now I'm looking at a Makergear machine that's 3 times the cost, lol.

      You should do well with the Makergear for that purpose. I've seen a number of people that print wargaming terrain and such use that printer and the prints look very nice.

    Hi Michael, thanks for the reviews. I have the ALDI machine and I find it pretty good for the money - I paid $400 new BTW :-). I saw in this review that you were going to do a firmware upgrade in a later episode using the Silverquark firmware. Thought I'd just mention that there is a later fork (that is based on Silverquark) for these machines and their clones which also interestingly includes support for auto bed leveling and has a nice user manual among other things. It appears that the Silverquark fork that is based on Marlin 1.1.4 hasn't been active since 2017 whereas the Andrivet version is more recent and based on Marlin 1.1.8 with some nice improvements over the original. I was thinking of doing this myself but am happy for you to take the risk first :-) and perhaps do a video of the process and your findings on your channel?
    Here's the link if you're interested. - github.com/andrivet/ADVi3pp-Marlin
    Keep up the good content and cheers for now.

      Hi Michael, I got a rush of blood, bit the bullet and did the update - well two actually (you have to do the LCD and the mainboard separately). All went well thanks to the excellent clear instructions and I have to say that, while still early days, I'm impressed with the new features and the much, much nicer colourful interface. The firmware is still in beta (V3) at the time of update but I'm really impressed so far. The project is still being actively worked on and there is a proposed 'change of filament' functionality being tested at the moment which should allow the easy change of colours during a print to be a reality. As mentioned there is a version of firmware that supports the BLtouch for bed leveling and I'm thinking that that will be the next project for me a bit down the track when I'm happy with the manual leveling version.
      Still looking forward to your findings and experience with the post installation tuning settings and setup.
      Cheers

    The CTC looks rubbish, but what a brilliant learning tool, children will easily find faults with it and redesign improvements. These improvements probably better being printed on either of the other two printers.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад

      That's true. You could do it it on the CTC if you have it working for long enough to do so. Hopefully that scenario would improve with each upgrade.

    To be honest I think it was a poor comparison of the Prusa mk3. You didnt mention the community around the Prusa, the forums, the github support. The constant firmware revisions. No mention of key upgrades that set the mk3 apart from the other two. Like the filament runout sensor or the resume print after power failure or the print head crash detection. No mention of the sensorless homing or the super quietness of tmc2130's motor drivers. No mention of all the self-test and calibration features of the firmware.
    All these features should have been mentioned in comparison of price, features and reliability. The mk3 cost twice as much as the cocoon for reasons I've mentioned here but you left out of your video. I dont think your video shows enough of the things the mk3 has that the others are missing to justify its costing double the price of clone.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад

      I acknowledge what you're saying but this video was already long enough without including that detail. I did mentioned the advanced features in a general way and link via card to my video review which goes through all of that properly. It's my compromise to keep the length down.

    • @tarlach1280x960

      Many of these fine features that you mentioned what makes the Prusa of piece of crap and give it so many of its problems. Also there are huge communities and forums behind these lower-cost machines like the anet A8 and the Tevo trantula. None of those fancy features you mentioned seemed to improve the quality of the parts you make I think I will use my brains to improve the quality instead of in the endless supply of money that Prusa has.

    Your comparing printers with quality parts with printers with crap parts. Sure the latter works for a while, but will crap out very soon. A fair comparison would take over 6 months of printing, not just a quick test.

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад

      I've had these printers for a while, they've each done some work. Except the CTC which barely prints and needs some serious time put in that I don't have. I feel I've accurately represented the many issues of the cheap printer. The other two both have a good reputation for good reason.

    If the printer wiring is so bad, don't use it at school. It won't meet Aus electrical safety standards, even with your mods. Shock risk for students and legal risk for you!

    • @TeachingTech
      @TeachingTech  6 лет назад

      Been tested and tagged by the qualified electrician at school. The only problem was the mains crimping being exposed, which the printed part covered. Everything else is low voltage DC so no electrocution risk.

    • @paulwary
      @paulwary 6 лет назад +1

      Good. The RCDs would maintain safety anyhow, but you don't want to give the impression that standard printed parts can be used for electrical safety applications. Electrical insulation plastics are tested for long periods at extremes of temperature and humidity. I doubt a printed part would be acceptable even if the material were identical, due to porosity, surface effects etc.

    • @tarlach1280x960
      @tarlach1280x960 5 лет назад

      @@paulwary most of the Prusa machines parts are 3D printed. And you could buy the top quality replacement parts for the lower cost machines and still have a lot of money in your pocket so your point is null and void.
