I think they're E-bows, they give a pulsed magnetic field that excites the strings (which are made of a magnetic material, e,g, steel or nickel) - the pulse rate's below string frequency so it's not heard as a musical note, but sets the string resonating to generate whatever note's fretted by the left hand.
