I will have to add a caveat to MA files, I have run into issues plenty of times where the use of internal tools/scrips simply made it so that maya was straight up unable to save to .ma and threw an error. Personally I prefer MB due to saving being faster and the file sizes being smaller. If you are worried about file corruption just make a lot of incremental saves and delete them later. Just my two cents.

I'll add another one : switch your up axis from Y to Z. This is not necessarily a 'beginner mistake' but just a tip that proved useful to me personally and may help you if you use multiple DCC tools. This helped me to transfer models between blender and 3ds max as I have to do this at work a lot and avoided headaches when it came to transformations. The FBX format handles this just fine but your meshes will have rotations on them in blender and max which is not ideal if you're dealing with some cases.

I agree. Switching up axis is a huge beginner mistake.

Is there a difference between using "insert" compared to D to adjust the pivot?

      No. Different keys, same function.
Although with D you can toggle or press down to activate.
