THE CLASSIC FLOW - 1/31 - Second Descent of the Comstock Couloir Solo

- Traveling twenty-five miles and accumulating 14,000’ to reach a once before skied line deep in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. This feat was one that challenged both my mind and body in the days preceding and throughout the expedition itself. Precision, thoughtfulness and a thorough respect for these mountains is what I attribute my successful journey to.
What do you think of the line?
The Comstock Couloir is the first episode of The Classic Flow. A multi-part series that will dive intimately into the journey of Michael Wirth climbing and skiing 31 of the Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America in just a single season. I hope you subscribe to stay tuned into the many more to come soon.
I embarked on this journey due to the fear of imminent last descents among these lines. With the climate changing rapidly, our snow is disappearing in many places. As a kid from the Aspen Valley, I grew up with Chris Davenport, Art Burrows and Penn Newhard’s book, The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America, looming as a distant dream. Cody Townsend’s FIFTY project has also been a sense of motivation and inspiration to take on the challenge of skiing a variety of these lines - what an adventure? Thus, I set out in January of 2022 to ski as many lines as possible in one season to discover what was possible from the logistic, technical and endurance capacities of myself.

Hahahaha it's awesome that you opened your series with this video after Cody opened his season 4 with a bail vid on the same line. Nice job managing the funky snow on your descent!
This is rowdy. Ready for more classic flow!
Nice work, Michael! Remember, we're mostly rooting for you to bring 'em back alive! Looks like you're getting some RUclips traction (RUclips presented it to me after watching Townsend's latest vid, so you're on a good trajectory!). Now subscribed! 👍🏽
A few comments. First, a great edit and video. Second, I am excited to see someone else chasing the 50 and documenting it. Third, the amount of preparation and thought process you use is pretty amazing and I look forward to your continued in depth analysis of your planning process in future videos (if you choose to do so). Lastly, 43 subscribers? That is a legitimate ridiculous paucity that I expect to see increase soon.
+1 on this. Awesome video.
I also want to add, I'm not sure I've seen anyone in a ski touring film ride anything sub 100 at the waist. I think he is on 93 Kastles -- so 93 mm waist -- which I find worth mentioning. I'd love a gear overview, because it seems like he has this dialed.
I love this, but this dude needs a helmet. Can’t risk someone not hitting the 50
578 subs
@@christopherorman5769 not that my skiing compares, but I ski an 88mm Volkl VTA in my films skiing in the Caucasus haha
I'd love to hit the 50 and ski in the Americas sometime, but for now, the Caucasus is all I've got :)
Super fit guy. No nonsense, brilliant video. This guy is just 20y old. Destined for greatness, if he continues to remain humble.
So friggin awesome.. i think you made the “nerd boot” skiing look pretty darn good. Solo skiing in wild places is true living! Hats off! excited to see more!
one of the most impressive solo skis ive ever seen. incredible accomplishment and so excited to see the rest of the series !! so amazing to see other young skiers pushing the boundaries
ya did it michael, we're watching now. work hard, think hard, good luck brother
Wait!?!?!?!
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!?
sooooo Subscribed!!!
Old School!
ilg is 60

and ilg is just like?!?!
Wow!
Head friggin’ BOWED!!!
from Durango, Colorado
Landed here because have been following Cody Townsend's quest. Just a few minutes in and I'm already struck by this guy's interesting combination of calmness on the outside, but seems buzzing with excitement on the inside, his ambition and confidence, and his optimism (what Shackleton called moral courage). Right, going to watch the rest of the video.
Good luck I'll be following, these are making me want to chase snow again...
What a beast! Hats off to you brother! Can't wait to see more of your adventures!
I looked up some of this guy’s feat, like traversing all 7 14ers in the Elk range in 22hrs. That’s crazy impressive
real.genuine.refreshing.impressive.
This is so damn INSPIRING! Can't wait to follow along for more adventures. Subscribed!
Sick man! What a push to do this in one day. Respect and subscribed ;)
Epic video, epic line. Congratulations on what is a mega project!
Wild....ballsy doing that solo. Nicely done 👍
Wow. Keep this series up and you'll be at 100k+ when you're done
Unreal! Stoked to follow along your chase of the 50.
Yooooo this was so sick!!
Congrats Michael and nice work with the video!
Sick push! Stay safe out there bud. godspeed.
Subscribed. That was awesome. Lol'd at quadruple blue boiler plate. Stay smart stay safe man
Great work! Thanks for including a bit of insight on your research, planning, scouting, and consideration process. Please keep more of that coming, I find it both interesting/entertaining and also very educational. Thanks for the killer content!
Congratulations! That is huge. Well done.
New subscriber. Just discovered your channel. Way to get after it!
Thanks Kevin!
awesome
great job dude - psyched to see everything else drop
Oh my god, the skiing looks absolutely horrifying. 55 degrees through such a tight rocky line. Terrifying and beyond impressive.
You sir have the biggest balls a man can have. 😁 I'm hooked on your videos. I wish you the highest levels of success. 👍
Extraordinary athletic accomplishment. Well done.
Another UK subscriber. Epic line!
Amazing and its a pretty exposed and open couloir no room for error!!!
amazing stuff, please don't stop the POV skiing on the descent
DAMN! Awesome! Loved the view into the prep and the view into the line from your perspective!
I dig the ice axe ski strapped to the pole technique
Amazing, well done
What a rad video! I really hope there are more to come like this because this was top notch. Really gets the stoke high to see people like yourself really getting after it🤘🏼
That's an impressive achievement...let alone how big a day that was on it's own. Well done!
Excellent point about "last descents"...especially after seeing what happened at the Joffre/Central Couloirs a couple of seasons ago. Change is inevitable.
What happened?
Best part was when you had a nap when things were melting. Good man.
So so good. Inspired is an understatement. Keep the train going.
Did I see an axe voile strapped to a poll as a makeshift whippet? Wow haha. Definitely stealing that.
Good mission
Nice one! Braaaaaaaaaaaaaavooo!
amazing stuff. skiing those conditions in "nerd boots" is beyond impressive
So cool! Just discovering your channel today. Can’t wait to see your further adventures! Thanks for documenting.
Félicitations pour cet accomplissement!!!
Epic man...
Sick work can’t wait to see more!
Amazing! Just watched the Cody Townsend video
we all know how a Gopro flattens-out steep terrain to make it look more mellow than it really is. This footage still looks steep as %^&% (13:50 for example), so can't imagine how steep it really was. Amazing accomplishment and congratulations.. stay safe!
Respect!! What a great line
🎉
That’s epic man. Congrats!
well well. Great grab.
hell yeah well done dude!!!!
You sir are a beast
Loved it. Subscribed from Manchester UK 👍
Good work! 🙌
Bravo cheers! 🎉🎉🎉👊🏻👊🏻
Rad video dude. I've just started doing similar stuff in Europe. Sick to see!
Though that is a beautiful looking line from a distance that decent looked shithouse haha. Great job bro.
Sub! Excellent achievement my dude! Go get it!
Cody’s got some competition. Good luck to you and be safe. Coming home is always the number one. Looking forward to more
Beast - you’re a freak for doing this 😮💨
Looks like to would be a fun but super scary line between the choke points and the exposure and the huge wind lip at the top
inspiring ski vid!
awesome! subscribed
Nice work!
Hell yeah man
love it
Chapeau Michael! Love your sense of humour and esprit!
Lmao Cody shivering in he boots rn
Subbed - super inspirational.
Wow! That is an insanely epic day. I’m impressed 🍻
Crushed this. Solo. Perfect timing with conditions!
Had to say something…solo is dangerous especially in those DANGEROUS conditions. So perfect timing? Maybe just lucky this time.
@@Alexlarrabure incredible achievement either way
i am shock at his young age! for real,at what age did he started bc touring and accumulated all those mileages and experiences?
Nice work, cool to see someone get to it after watching Cody miss.
I like your style bro, solo all the way
What a machine. Would love for this to evolve not to another 'ski the 50' thing, but something 'else'. But honestly - 14k day and like 'yeah, legs a bit tired'. wat?
Savage!!
So wait did you beat cody to the second?
wow
Inspiring, I think you could finish the project first!
I lost it at 9:42 lmao
Man wouldn't have had the legs for the downhill.. nice work.
Eat your heart out Cody Townsend! Haha What a mission man, so epic!
Cause weather didn't cooperate? Eat your heart out is a weird position to take as a 'pow ripper', one would think you understand situations in which the mountains have their own plans someday.
Codys done how many of the 50 now? lol, I think he'll just be stoked to have some more beta on this line. And stoked old Micheal got in and out safe.
@@CalgaryDynastar Haha calm down buddy I was making a joke.
Cheers for doing it solo, and for the love of skiing and wild places, without needing to make a big production out of it. I was up there this spring and managed to catch a bunch of other big lines in prime condition (ruclips.net/video/qgC9zlmeYTU/видео.html), but never seriously considered Comstock due to the approach. Thanks for showing us what's possible!
When did you do this? Great skiing
Rad, totally fucking sick. Great style
Nice vid and great descent. Who bootpacked up the couloir? Was that you?
Did you watch the video??
SUPER SAV
wake up babe 50 rival dropped
Who’s gonna dig you out if/when that time comes? This is so sick and amazing but also I worry for your safety if you’re gonna go up solo in unstable terrain 😅
How is it any of our business? Solo expedition and soloing are pretty personal choices and are also really rad times.
@@TheSubieFan when someone posts a public video like this it sets an example and dumb people with no experience will risk their lives and the lives of SAR
@@dangus5459 Look at the content do you honestly believe they have no experience?
@@TheSubieFan I’m talking about viewers. This dude is an expert.
Everyone makes their own choices, but solo backcountry travel is hairy... Wouldn't catch me out by myself, shit happens and in isolated places like this, its not worth the chance man... I love being deep in the boons on the sleds, but always have someone with you, my 2 cents.
Solo ski in the backcountry = ☠️
Partner up people. Stay safe, stay alive!!🤙
omg not solo in the backcountry, sacrilege! lol
the craziest part of all this is this guy is only 20 years old!
12:28 must have been the turn of your life
thats some real shit there son
Loved the video. Your crazy not to be wearing a helmet.
guys out in the backcountry ripping a huge isolated col by himself and you are worried about a helmet?
@@CalgaryDynastar Even more reson to wear one!!!!
No part of that seems like fun ☝️ lol hike a day for some shitty snow?!
