Spanish Air Force EF-18 Hornet - Pushing the limits at RIAT 2017

- The Spanish Hornet pushed the limits of slow flying speed and low level flying boundaries in its dynamic display at RIAT. The EF-18M Hornet display was also challenged by the Uk weather with low cloud cover in places for this display and no flying on Saturday due to minimal visibilty.

The Spanish air force is one of the best in Europe, its combat groups of F-18 and eurofigthers are a very dangerous air warfare force.
Spanish Fly Academy is one of the hardest in the world .
Nah my mom is the most dangerous weapon
IDK, UK has the Eurofighters & F-35s
@@RichKilla86ers f35 sucks balls
Best Hornet display I've seen. Pushing the limits, indeed. He made it dance. The camera work and editing were superb, too. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Definitely was a great display.
Absolutely a good display but the one from Swiss was better.
That was an amazing display, I've never seen an F-18 flown like that before
Excelentes siempre nuestros pilotos del Ejército del Aire del Reino de España.
impresionantes pilotos

qué ironía que los mejores en combate aéreo de Europa vuelan aviones sin cañones ni misiles de corto alcance
the only 4th gen US-made aircraft that is maneuverable and bravo for the Spanish pilot!
Wow! Never knew the Hornet could be that extreme. Some of that looks more efficient in energy recovery than a flanker, impressive roll rate too.
The Hornet certainly can be flown impressively and totally agree on the apparent better energy recovery (maybe due to be lighter?)
They had very Difficult Air Academy, one of the best in the world.. During the last competitive games Spanish and Israelites pilots were at the top.. Search Patrulla Aguila ...

F-18E Super Hornet's cobra manoeuvre.
the Flanker is a naval aircraft it's quite heavy
@@valenrn8657 4 years later and I saw this reply! Thanks that’s great 😃
A masterful display in energy management.
That seems to be the highlight of this display for many
wow! the Spanish pilot flew the thing better than the American pilots. never knew a f18 could do that. never seen it before.
Stunning control and display for sure. (Must have stolen the thrust vectoring parts of the F22!)
Neither me!
@@ramonparada Interesting information and probably explains some of the impressive display moves. Thanks for sharing Ramon!
@@NigelWoolleyaviation Did they changed the software (surfaces controls) like the Swiss and the Finns?
@@MrMolack We have afaik a rebuilt software system
Awesome Zaragoza Hornets!
Oh man the manoeuvres at 2:45 and 3:40....so hot! I saw this demo at Sanicole, Belgium last year. This is a very nice display indeed! The most impressive and most memorable f18 demo I've seen. Nice camera and editing!
Felicidades al piloto y al Ejercito del Aire, por este increible display, el mejor del RIAT 2017
Awesome display of Spanish F-18!
Que orgulloso me siento de nuestros pilotos del ejército del aire . Siempre en el corazón

Great video and I just love how that plane seems to just stop and then accelerate away. Amazing
Thanks Dan and definitely great recovery abilities after slow speed moves.
Thanks for this. It was one of the most impressive displays, especially given some of the much newer aircraft on show.
Plenty of love for this display, especially as you say there are newer higher profile aircraft.
Espectacular!, Yo tampoco sabía que nuestro F18 podía moverse así de ágil. Gracias por el vídeo. Muy bueno.
You can be proud of your country's pilots and thanks for watching.
2:46 G-Forces were probably very high at that point. Amazing pilot!
Impressive manuevers. My favorite American multi-role fighter jet.
excelente pilot Spanish
Pintando el cielo de Rojo y Amarillo por todo el mundo.
¡Viva España y el ejército del aire!
Such an elegance! Amazing display..
Absolutely correct there Anthony!
Just one word: IMPRESSIVE!
I'd add 'super' to you impressive as well!

Two words then! 😄👍🏻
A masterful demonstration of skill and elegance. Bet they get better weather in his home country but he still had this in the plan.
Defintely masterful. I saw the same demo the following weekend in Spain with much clearer skies and there was just as much skill if not even more slow speed amazing abilities.
It also rains in Spain.
Lovely video, I was there for Friday Saturday and Sunday and think that his display was the best by far
Thanks OJ and pleased you spent so much time at the airshow. I agree the Spanish F18 did some impressive moves and maybe overlooked by others focusing on F22 or Sukhoi.
This should have won best display!
Nigel Woolley yes definitely, I like how he was very ballsy on the first two loops and from where I was standing he went below the stands that I was near.
Oliver Thompson - Yates my thoughts exactly mate
Nice !
I was there on sunday and though it was the raptor and the surprise B2 that thrilled, this was the best individual display imho.
love F 18 Hornet.......
2:44 WOW
Should have won the prize for best display. Amazing.
That climb in minute 2:50.....that other in minute 3:42....guys those two maneuvres were time- freezing ones.I'm curious; was this display pilot a junior or senior one?.Excellent agressive flying skills on show.Really nice job!!!!!.
Freaking love to see the Hornet flown as it was designed to be flown! AoA all day, every day!
Definitely an amazing display. I've seen it a couple of times in Spain, along with the EF and it blows your mind and ears :). By the way Nigel, if you are in the south of Spain these days, remember to pass by Torre del Mar in Malaga (Sun Coast). There will be a great air show this weekend (28 till 30) where you can see again this solo display and some other fine aircrafts enjoying a sunny weekend at the beach.
Now you are teasing me Javier as today I have a return flight to another hemisphere! I booked my trip before the performers were announced for Spanish airshows then later I realised that I would have preferred to go to theTorre del Mar airshow first. Whilst there is no aircraft there I havent seen I was still keen. Enjoy if you are going! Cheers
Sure I will! Cheers :)
Que gusto da verlos volar, pilotos y cazas, sería un lujo verlos volar por Baleares, tanto estos como los Tiphon Euro.
wow this is a great demo! wish they flew like this in the us airshows.. i really wish another country had f22 raptors to really display what it can do.
Now that would be interesting. Give the Ukrainians an F22 for the weekend!
Give this F-22 to The Spanish People
!
That is a nice idea.. Seems like the american are not talented pilots didnt much enough knowledge how to mnuever thier jets.. As like spanish pilot too much talent.. It would be cool if there the one who use the raptor
Nice video! By far the best display of the week/weekend :)! As great as it was having the flanker at RIAT the displays itself were quite tame..might have been down to the weather though.
Cheers TTF. Overshadowed by higher profile aircraft prior to show but won great support after demo.
Agreed with that, knew it would be a highlight on the flying display as soon as it was announced :)
holly shit! incredible display!
Nice. Looking forward to seeing you over Bray Sir.
Increible 🇪🇸
simply the best display of all, that is flying at it`s best; shame on all the other with their fancy newer, crappy planes ( Raptor, F 35, Typhoon...)
That Spaniard can fly that f18
Absolutely!
That Spaniard can fly *the shit out of* that F-18.
You can only be that competent with your aircraft after hundreds of flight hours.
Bravoooooo from Ala46 virtual
Hey you uploaded this on my birthday July 18 lol earned a sub
I try to please most people ha! I'll try and upload something for you on July 18 this year too :)
+Nigel Woolley better be about the super hornet lol
That was a violent loop
damn, the AOA on that thing
Nice display hoping to see the SH this week in Ireland nice vid
Should be great display at Bray. Went there last year and enjoyed watching it from Bray Head. I'm in Spain at a small airshow this weekend also watching the Spanish Hornet display so hopefully they are both great. Enjoy.
Myself and the family had a good spot last year halfway up Bray Head until some fools set the place on fire lucky to be alive I kid thee not
Open slots available for foreign pilots in the US Navy Blue Angels!!!!.Any Spanish pilots willing to step forward?.
Impresive display and camera stability. What camera did you use? On a tripod right?
Cheers J21. Great display of skill and control. Used a Sony AX53 and handheld only. Challenge with a tripod to follow a full routine of a display aircraft without tripping over it!
So you came to the decision that handheld is beter than on a tripod? I also used the Ax53, couple of days back, first time at an airshow and although I tend to think that I'm quite good at holding a camera after some airshows over the years and way cheaper cameras , It seems to me that your video has greater stability than mine! You were either closer to the subject then me, have better settings, or you ar very good at holding it or I might be missing something, and I would be gratefull if you could help me find what. I will post the link of my video of the F18 Spanish Air Force and please fell free to coment it there, or reply me here about what could I improve in video shooting with this camera. I realy struggled to buy this camera, because of it's price, after more than a year of wondering and reading about it and although I am pleased with what I managed to get at it's first airshow, I know it can to better..I've seen it at others on youtube. One thing to mention, and posibly one of the small regrets is that I keept it on active stabilisation rather than on the more powerfull active inteligent, and this is because I wanted to be able to also take photos during shooting, which I did. But now thinking back I would drop the photo option over the more powerfull stabilisation and increased zoom that comes with it. Although the active one does a great job too. Maybe I had a little to much expectations of this camera after what I saw on youtube airshows or maybe I'm not that good as I thought, or the fact that it was clowdy I didn't get the details and clarity I saw at others that used it on airshows. But the atmosphere was good for me to see for the first time something that I've only dreamed which is the condensation cone (min 5.50) and that was awsome. After some years of shooting airshows with an almost 10 times cheaper photo camera, not even a video camera, the Canon Sx160 IS, I thought that the BOSS on the Ax53 will make a 20-30 zoom a peace of cake, well not quite I must say now..But your subject seems rock solid on the screen, mine not so much and being the same camera I can't get it why. Maybe it is just the fact that I didn't used it's best stabilisation option, the inteligent active one. I repeat that with less performant cameras I manage to hold the subject quite good, comparing to others. Can you tell me your settings please like 25, 50 or 100 fps? Tipe of stabilisation used and other factors that comes to mind like scene, microphone volume, etc. Thank you a lot! Here's my video, I will also edit other videos these days from what I've filmed that day at the Airshow. ruclips.net/video/C4Q18D95b9w/видео.html
Sorry for delay in replying but your comment was in the review section because of link you added. A few answers to questions: I believe the tripod gets in the way of recording a full tripod plus you need extra space to operate it at airshows which is usually not available. Regarding videoing active aerial displays it's very challenging for all as only those that try can attest to! The Sony Ax53 provides so much benefit with it's stabilisation but has downsides as well (eg can only manually control one setting at a time like shutter speed, the zoom is a ridiculous hard to smoothly use button, it needs perfect light to show off it's excellent recording abilities so backlight or low light doesnt help as does drab military aircraft. Despite all that until another similar stabilisation camera like that comes out I'm sticking with it. Tight shots on moving aircraft are so challenging so i prefer to have wider shots and if it is stable footage i crop the video in editing. On different days I take good stuff and then on other days bad shakey footage whether it is too much coffee or whatever! I have spoken to TV mobile cameramen and they say that stable footage is all in the core muscles and torso rotation rather than wrists, elbows arms etc. I find that each day of an airshow I get better, more relaxed and smooth etc then record some rubbish after a break of weeks or months etc. Full stabilisation, 50fps, microphone volume down to 3 or 4 and cut side noises so less people chat beside you. Jets make plenty of noise so can be easily heard and can be too excessive at normal settings. I looked at your video and wished I was there! I have seen so many videos worse that yours including mine so I reckon just regular use and body control will make some stunning videos. I hate to look back at my first videos as they are rubbish so we all make progress. Good luck!
Almost backflip!!!
👏🇪🇸
Still a better aircraft than the awful F35

More F-16 vs F-35A Block 3I from Norwegian pilot.
I quote
Overall, flying the F-35 reminds me a bit of flying the F/A-18 Hornet, but with an important difference: It has been fitted with a turbo.
ruclips.net/video/JYX4lHQJlrQ/видео.html
F-35's small radius back-flip + heading reversal
Australia has F-18A MLU (mid-life upgrade), F-18F Block 2/2+ and F-35A-AU Block 3I (soon to be Block 3F), hence Australia has real practical experience when comparing the mentioned fighter aircraft models.
Norway has F-35A Block 3I and F-16A MLU.
Agree
With what materials are you filming this Nigel?
Just a hand held Sony vid camera
