Just read something yesterday saying how you train guineas to go back in every night is by only release one flock member the first day the slowly allowing another to join it each time until they all know where home is because they will always return to their main flock to roost. Haven’t tried it because I don’t have them but might be worth a try. Glad they all came back.
amechelb - I could see that working... so far, we're a couple nights in and a few are going in each night and a few are staying out. It's improving each night. Eventually, I think they'll get it.
amechelb i have done that with my quails and they have came back to their coop when it’s night time, it just gonna take some time for them to get used to it
I used to take care of my old bosses chickens and ducks once in a while. I would go down to the area with a bucket with some feed in it and jiggle it around a little. They got into a routine of hearing it and running out from wherever they were at dusk and running into their house (where I would throw the feed). I only had issues getting them inside a few times, and a laser pointer helped to herd them in the right direction. You just have to get them into a routine and they’ll follow it like clockwork 😉 🤷🏻♀️
Guineas have pretty hard eggs. It's tradition for the kids where I live to have a colored easter egg with you during easter, and if they meet a friend or someone else, they can have a competition where they take turns trying to crack the opponents egg with their own. One kid always had a guinea egg and he'd always win the competition, because all of us would have chicken or duck eggs. But we found a way to crack his eggs, while he'd hold it for someone to take a shot, THE someone would hit it from the bottom and make it fly out of his hands, until it fell on the ground and fell apart completely. He cried the first time, but he should've played fair and square in the first place.
That's interesting! I remember when we hatched out the eggs last year, but I never got to crack one open when they're fresh. Hopefully, we'll get to find out this year when they start laying.
@@whitehouseonthehill | Can't wait. My dad had guinea fowls when he was a kid, and he also remembers that they are hard to get in the coop. They had them as pets to roam in the yard, but they rarely let them out of the coop because they were such a trouble to get in. But they're beautiful. I can't wait until I get my own property to have some of these beauties roam around.
We used to throw a handful of feed in when we wanted the birds to come in at night. Not enough to prevent foraging, but enough to associate their safe spot with a treat.
Lois Bell - I think the food and water has been bringing them near their coop each night. It's getting a little better each night as they learn where their home is again.
I see you got the car out of the field. Good deal! You guys had a good round of family guinea herding there. Looks like they're enjoying their freedom. I hope they do a great job of keeping the ticks at bay for you guys.
@@whitehouseonthehill hahah I know was just meming around. What you're doin is more than just parenting. But also being a teacher of nature a job well done indeed !!
This never fails me when I get my van hung up in mud, and has also worked when used on cars. Take 2 long boards, at least 6 to 8 inches wide and long enough to span the width of your vehicle, and put it under you tires. If you are backing out put them behind your tires, one across the back and one across the front, if going forward put them in front of your tires. It's important that the boards are long enough to stretch from one tire all the way to the other and make sure the boards are almost wedged under them. Slowly back up or drive forward. It gives something solid for the tires to grip all at the same time; the aim is to mimic pavement. Lovely video, by the way. My mom, who passed away December 9th last year, always said when they were young children grandma and grandpa had guineas and she said they were loud and noisy but they'd always let you know if someone was coming up the drive. Thank you for the nice reminder of my mom. And, I know you already do but spend as much time with your boys as you can; blink and then turn around a time or two and before you realize it, they'll be 20 years old and going off to college. Sounds cliche yes, but I discovered "The Cat's In The Cradle" has a grain of truth to it lol.
made the mistake of using a board when stuck on ice- shot the board right out 20 yards into the bushes. still grateful no one was behind the car- or another car!!

Up here in Canada we get stuck in the snow often. I have found that the car floor mats help a lot. Before you start digging and spinning your wheels, place the mats in front or behind your wheels, grip side down. It has gotten us out every time. Not sure about sloppy mud but it’s worth a try. This tip comes a little late for you but it might help your viewers in the future.
Great video! You obviously raised your guineas well because they trusted you enough to be herded. Those raised poorly become wild and feral. We used to feed them one time a day at bed time in the coop, and they always perched there. Thanks for the fond memories. R.
When stuck in the mud use branches and firewood perpendicular to the tires and make a ramp. The irregularity of the firewood gives better traction for your tires to bite into. Using milled lumber inline with your tires, as you saw, will not help as the wood immediately gets greasy with the mud and you just slip.
Got my truck stuck after installing a chain link fence, used extra cuts of the chain link fence under the tires for traction, worked like a charm, kept the chain link cuts in the back of the truck and theyve come in handy twice since then 🙏

In the future you can use hay, straw, grass clippings, small branches, tumbleweeds and stuff like that to get unstuck. You pack it down around the tire and in the muddy path. Also, along where you plan to go. Put it in first gear or reverse and go for it slowly but firmly. If you continue to slip you need more plant matter. It might be wise for you to get a set of auto lifting air bags. they are light weight and you place them under your vehicle, they come with a hose and funnel that you can connect to the vehicle's exhaust to inflate. Once lifted it is easy to put boards under wheels to ramp out of the hole. They are sold at amazon for around $120.00. They get met out of a jam quickly, and are easy to carry and store.
You guys need something called a Yankum Rope. One of my channels Matt's Towing and Service uses them with his CJ Jeep. It is not cheap but it does amazing job of getting cars, SUV's and RV's out of muddy roads. Maybe letting air out of tires would make them flatter so you would have more surface area for the tires to grip, Maybe invest in a good farm tractor would help too. I suspect that is something you have thought about purchasing at a later time.
I keep a couple of rolls of old carpet in my boot sliced into tire and a half wide strips to place down as bog mats. It works, is cheap, gives the tires something to grip to pull themselves out and has saved me from getting stuck many times.
