How To Make Motion Sensor Light Switch using CD4017 & IR sensor at Home

In this 4017 project, I have shown how to make motion sensor light switch using CD4017 & IR sensor for the washroom. I have made the complete motion sensor circuit on a homemade PCB and use this circuit as the automatic washroom light switch. When anyone enters the washroom the IR sensor senses the motion and turns on the light and when he or she exit from the washroom the IR proximity sensor again senses the motion and accordingly turns off the light automatically.
During the tutorial video, I have shared the complete 4017 ic project circuit diagram, so after watching the video, you can easily make this simple motion sensor project using 4017 IC and use it as motion-activated light or motion-activated alarm.

Required components for the CD4017 project
1) CD4017 IC
2) LM358 IC
3) BC547 Transistor
4) 100uF 25V Capacitor
5) 1000uF 25V Capacitor
6) 220-ohm 0.25watt Resistors - 4 no
7) 10k 0.25watt Resistor
8) 10k Trimmer
9) LED 5mm - 2no
10) IR LED pair (Detector & Emitter)
11) 1N4007 Diode
12) 5V SPDT Relay
13) Connectors & IC Base
14) Acrylic sheet
I have used the 5V mobile charger to supply the circuit. Please take proper safety precautions while working on 110V or 230V AC.
You can also adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensor using the 10k trimmer.
After watching the video, you can easily design this motion sensitive light switch circuit for your home.

The LM358 is the worst chip I've every worked with. I will never use that chip again. Instead, I will and have used the U2531B chip. This is an amazing little chip and does an extremely good job with IR leds as an IR receiver.

Hi, I need a sensor switch to turn on a light (110VAC) when someone sits at the table, and turn off when he leaves the table. Can you show me how to do it? I do not mind getting an off-market product, but how to wire it to the lamp? Thank you very much!

Use flex sensor in the chair when a person sits the hair will flex backwards so that the sensor attached to it when there is a flex detecked the value will change to 1 and the program with Arduino or Nodemcu will switch on the light when the person leaves the sensor will compress and the value changes to 0 so that the light turns off hope it's helpful ✌️

It works but it is wrong:
1) why to use a decade counter driver (4017) like a flip flop D? Use a 7474!
2) the sensor change its state every time, so if you cause two pulse instead just one, you can stay in the dark, or leave the room with the light on. None check of the right state; this can generate errors !

To Tiago: Your question is very valid.
As it is triggered one pulse per switching,
that is: one for ON and one for OFF , Two persons could upset the On/Off sequence.
Obviously only effective for ONE PERSONs Entry and Exit. A possible solution would be to have a delayed Turn OFF switching
but that also, will not be error proof !!

how much do all those units cost
An esp8266 and a relay with a motion sensor is all you need.
A little programming experience needed. With that you would pay 3 bucks at most for the 8266 about a dollar for the motion sensor and about 2 to 4 for the relay. so from 6 to 8 dollars. and with the 8266 you can set a time length for how long stays on.

So is it that: you initially have to turn it off and be outside, then start using it? I would have a circuit that recognize the direction of movement, ie; if the motion detected from outside to inside then Turn ON, and if motion detected from inside to outside then Turn Off. You may do so by using a simple microcontroller and a simple logic coded into the MCU.
