I can see why Rita Hayworth became such a great star. She literally dominates the screen. And all she did was dance, flash her eyes and smile seductively.
She was a true dancer. In all Hollywood history this is one of the rarest moments we can see a true flamenco dance. Observe when she dances with her real master uncle she goes to the top of her dancing skills. The same occurs with Fred Astaire. She was not just as beautiful as Heaven, she was a true genius in arts.
She is really charming and a good dancer in general but this is not true flamenco dance, it is a shocking interpretation of what flamenco is with some little things being remotely accurate. I would not consider myself as an expert but I have been listening flamenco since childhood and dancing flamenco for several years now.
It was always a treat to see Rita dance, because when she danced she came alive on film. Dancing was her real passion (and her earliest training), more so than being sexy or dramatic- and it showed. She even commented how the films she enjoyed the most were the musicals she did with Astaire and Kelly. And in this brief flamenco, you can see the joy again- the Cansino roots. Marvelous.
Beautiful Rita Hayworth. What a pleasure to watch her dancing! Glenn Ford was a lucky man---he played five times opposite Rita. Yes, Rita had Spanish blood too. Passion, class, beauty and flamenco---who would ask for more?
The irony of her appearing in "The Many Loves Of Carmen" is that Carmen is her middle name. Her real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino. Her father was born in Spain. When she started appearing in movies, she tried shortening her name to Rita Cansino, but the big Hollywood executives thought the name was still too Latino for American audiences, who were used to actors and actresses with Anglo-Saxon names, so they decided to replace Cansino with her Irish mother's maiden name, Haworth. It was pronounced "HAY-worth," but the same Hollywood big shots were worried that audiences would think Rita's name was "HA-worth," so they added the letter "y" so everyone would know how it really sounded. In other words, Rita Hayworth was a Hispanic pretending to be an Anglo-Saxon pretending to be a Hispanic! Incidentally, the original spelling of the name Hayworth, without the "y," was still used by British actress Jill Haworth, who's best remembered as the first one to play Sally Bowles in the original 1966 Broadway musical version of "Cabaret," the same role that was played by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film adaptation of the play. Ironically, more people remember Miss Minnelli's version of Sally (who's an American) than they do Miss Haworth's take on the character (who's English).
Hey, people: Her actual name was Margarita Carmen Cansino (as far as I know). And as for the flamenco dance, that's in her roots, too. Her father was a flamenco dancer.
Rita Hayworth was most of the reason shaping my becoming a romantic man as I watched few of her movies in late 1940's as a teenager. She was oozing with sensuality and sexuality... and I was completely charmed and attracted by her! What a woman... she was! Thank you
I remember when my beloved Mother told me that Rita Hayworth danced flamenco with the castanets, I never knew who she was? I'm so astonished by watching Rita dances. She has a seductive smile, as she dances around Glen Ford with her castanets.
She had this ability to mesmerize. It was a combination of qualities that combined was like lightning in a bottle. Glenn manages to hold his own, but she's on another level.
What a woman... Beautiful, good actress and also a great dancer Perfect mix of Irish (mother was Irish-English) and Spanish (father was Spanish Gitano (Romani))
Her mother was the daughter of an Irishwoman and a Englishman with noble ancestry. Her father was a Spaniard from Andalusia, so he did have Arabian blood in his veins. Unlike Rita's haters usually state, she took great pride in her Spanish origin - she also took pride of the Anadalusian people's Moorish roots.
@@renarga6886 Her father was Romani of the Kale tribe, who settled in Andalusia during the middle ages from India. She was open about the fact that she was Romani, not Spanish. Her dad was Spanish by nationality, but Romani by ethnicity/race.

I'd like to start by talking about Rita. She does a great job on this film, she looks beautiful, but I particularly prefer the actress in the black and white films. It seems to me on the silver screen that she looks like a goddess of love. Watching her in the role of Carmen has a special flavor because both are of Spanish origin. Carmen's character was a pioneer (not official) in the struggle for the emancipation of women. She has strong personality and owns her nose. It is a pity that these qualities are seen as defects and that the girl is frequently beaten and victimized by verbal and physical violence. Overall, the story goes for fun, even though it's against the gypsies. They appear as villains, traitors and cowards.
Rita Hayworth herself was a pioneer, both in the struggle for the emancipation of women and in the fight against Censorship. Today's pseudo-divas have A LOT to learn from her work and her story.
