Ballafon players play with the bass to the left, OR to the right.Its their preference. The really really good ones can play both with no percievable technical difference.
Perhaps he means that the low notes are located on the right side of the instruments from the point of view of the player, as opposed to the Western style idiophone layout like xylophones which have low notes on the left and high notes on the right. Interesting. I find it equally interesting when I see left handed guitar players play right-handed guitars without re-stringing them (so their high strings are on the top instead of on the bottom).
