  • Prior to WWII Adolph Hitler met with Neville Chamberlain who was on a peace mission. No deal was reached but an incredible tale emerged that still remains in debate today about a soldier named Henry Tandey.

If we’re going to blame this guy, then by that logic we should blame his mother for carrying him, the doctor for delivering him, any babysitters, the grocery store clerks for selling food to him his whole childhood…
…you don’t shoot an injured soldier who isn’t a threat. Henry couldn’t have known. It would’ve been a murder on his conscience.

It's not the same, they were at war, such were sparing ennemies was common but not a rule at all.
If he was more angry that day he would have taken the shot for sure, it's just luck that spared him.

I would not have shot hitler in the moment. I would have had no idea, and shooting a wounded kid is morally incorrect.

The British soldier was part of a squad clearing a French village after the British artillery strike. Stirling rounded the corner of a building, found a wounded unarmed German soldier crawling on the ground and bleeding heavily. Stirling pointed his gun at the man, the German looked up at him and held his arm in front of his face waiting for the end. Stirling was overcome with pity and left the German to crawl away. Chamberlain looked up British army records and discovered the identity of the soldier who was still alive. The soldier confirmed Hitler's story to Chamberlain. The old British soldier never knew the man he let escape was Hitler until Chamberlain told him

Even if he did fire and killed Hitler, I feel like there would've been an even worse person to take Hitler's place. I understand that this is in the past, but I feel like the universe would still make the atrocities of the Second World War happen. That's morbid, I know. But I just have that feeling, you know?

The Hitler incident never took place and is unfortunate that the story perpetuates as it distracts from Tandey's courage.
Henry Tandy was a very brave man who was awarded the Military Medal, Distinguished Conduct Medal and Victoria Cross for acts of extreme gallantry and absolute courage.

I wouldn't say it takes any glory from him. Id even say that not killing a wounded defenseless soldier is a good thing to do. It was very unlucku that the spared german was Hitler, but , since he couldn't have known what the random person he decided not to shoot that day would have become one of the worst dictators known to mank8nd, in the moment it was a right thing to do.

No one is inherently born evil. Even a young Hitler initially displayed love for his country and lacked significant influence, power, or radical idealism. However, it was the turbulent circumstances of war, his growing anger and disillusionment, coupled with his exposure to extremist ideologies, that contributed to his transformation. In essence, he succumbed to the dark forces that surrounded him, emphasizing the role of external factors in shaping his actions and beliefs.

Chamberlain did not return from Munich empty-handed. He got an agreement that postponed WWII by a year, allowing the Brits to prepare. If Hitler hadn't launched the Second World War another German would have. They were furious with how they were treated at the Paris Peace Conference.

well I was taught about a dilemma I think, it was "would you kill Hitler by going back in time and when he was an infant?" knowing the acts he would commit in the future. my opinion was no, since he did not commit crime yet and changing events will change history of course, for better or for worse, no one knows. Hitler was just the same as any of us, just that he took things further as a natural politician, everyone has different talents, Hitlers shined during his rule.
