As someone diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, this song has had me entranced since I first heard it. Every. Single. Time. People were speculating it was about her parents. That’s not what I get at all. From the beginning, I’ve always felt this song was a reflection of how she feels about herself. As someone with BPD, this song is such an accurate depiction of the internal polarities I go through- in a moments notice. This constant argument in my head that is complete idealization and then devaluation. One moment i’m everything, the next i’m nothing. One moment i’m all things good, the next, all things terrible. This song is an anthem for me, of exhaustion of an unstable sense of identity, as it’s mostly shaped around (for me) the actions of the people I care about around me. (One person in particular, my partner- fellow bpd’ers- favorite person am I right?) This song is a mantra of that constant shifting of self. Idk if anyone will even read this, but I thought I’d share what the song means for me. Thank you Lola for writing songs that make me feel seen, represented and validated. There are very few songs that do that in this way- this is absolutely one of them. Be well, all !!
