      @doodr Why would a thief waste their time on cutting through it? Anyone's motorcycle secured with this isn't likely to be locked up in an out of sight place where someone that has the right saw can plan out a theft. I could see a mid-range bicycle where the owner shells out for a nicer lock, but again...it's not likely to be worth the thief's time if they have the funds to afford the right cutting equipment in the first place and have the skill/experience to not get caught while trying it.
      Sure, it can happen. But nearly anything can be broken/stolen. It's just a matter of how hard you make it and how unappealing you make it to a thief. I just can't see someone having the skillset to deal with this actually risking it or wasting their time. They'd be better off looting a couple cars in the area.

He kept a beefy chain like that tied to a lamppost near work, and someone apparently "worked" on the chain while the bike was not there. Any lock that gives YOU such difficulty is a good one!
    Bet when you uploaded it the Kryptonite guys were going "Gary! Come watch this!"
    And - layman's suggestion - perhaps they could make it so one or two discs has tension so if its turned without constant pressure it'll push back?
    The disturbing pattern I still find is that all you need to do to get there is stick something in to rotate them then start turning tumblers. Find a way to disrupt that so you have to push everything or most at the same time you'll have a pick resistant lock that'll either require a 'mission impossible' style micro shape key tool or a copy of the physical key. Combine that with electronics that locks out the lock if there's no chip with a changeable code in the key - and can't be opened easily from the outside we'll have locks that as designed can only be broken into by huge physical force.

      Where? I'm not seeing a good target point.
      This one actually looks like the most realistic destructive attack would be an angle grinder. Maybe if the plastic cover is off we'd see a vulnerable spot, but there's a decent chance this one would break the Ramset instead.
      Depending on what's under the plastic, maybe a slide hammer on the core would work? Impossible to say without destroying the plastic or trying it.

    This would also be a good idea for ebikes. With the motor the weight is pretty irrelevant. I use this ones little brother the 1415 and its also a beast. Love it.
    Some people say that kryptonites detainer cores sieze up. Ive had mine for over 2 years and it functions like new everytime.
    The krypto before that i had for almost 10 years and only had one problem that was solved with some three in one oil and cycling the lock a few times. Just have to make sure the key is all the way in before turning or it WILL jam up.

    Never seen the lock out of its cover but im gonna wager that the shackle guard is not integrated into the lock but is seperate and held on by the plastic shell. I bet the core is pinned or peened in but still pretty resistant to pulling.
    This is good for people securing mobile assesets in high risk areas.

    Great video, I have the chunkier orange NY Kryptonite. To see the concentration involved on a clean desktop, you know the lock in an awkward dangling position will be a nightmare. Would like to see you do a fast evaluation on my flexible 'Litelok' wearable model, very light, well padded... But surely below this. It is rated 'Gold' for motorcyles.
    Cheers 🍻 Remember personal security, because that lock will attract attention... Thieves usually carry weapons, work in pairs and will grab an open cell phone out of your hand. These excellent locks simply raise the stakes 😑

    That massive chain looks like the TOW CHAIN I bought at HFTools. I wonder if bike thieves would be less likely to steal your bike if you had locks from several manufacturers locking the chain or several locks locking several chains to one bike even though they can all be picked with the right TOOLS and TIME. Three chains with three lesser locks hooked to one bike might be a deterrent. I am hoping.

Remember; I am professional Russian" I heard that Kyle was busted for possession of drugs with intent to supply so can no longer possess guns and that the arms finder geezer got murdered and that's why FPSRussia fell apart

    I have this lock with the short chain. It literally weighs as much as my first bike frame did. (it was an ultralight frame) Nowadays I rock a heavy cruiser, but since it would cost me 3X the $ to replace vs. that first touring frame... $120 for a lock (on sale) seemed reasonable. Thing is, I almost never lock my bike up out of my sight in public anyway. And I use it to lock my bike to a steel storage rack inside my locked garage when it's at home. Most bike thieves are not sophisticated, with crews using cordless angle grinders or very large bolt cutters and a stolen pickup to make a run. If one bike has a lock that will take two minutes to cut through with the angle grinder and the other lock two seconds... they will ignore the bike right next to it with the good lock. We hope. ;)

    • @railgap
      @railgap 3 года назад

      BTW businesses and organizations and cities: bike racks need to be bolted down! There were cases in Boulder Colorado a few decades back where entire bike racks with bikes attached were lifted onto a flatbed and taken down to Denver never to be seen again. Owners: don't use your $200 unpickable, uncuttable lock on an object which can be cut much more easily than the lock. Pay attention to your surroundings. Would it be better to lock it up a block away and hoof it to your destination where the bike would be safer?

    Just a quick note, using a magnet to tell if something is steel is not reliable. That lock could be pure iron or nickel. Also depending on where it was formed in the phase diagram the magnetism varies greatly.

    If someone like LockPickingLawyer
    needs so much time to lockpick this one, I think you can say it's "unpickable" (nobody will "waste" so much time as it'll be faster to cut it with a tool)

    • @MatthewCampbell765
      @MatthewCampbell765 4 года назад +3

      Well, it's hard to say. While the lock is very secure, the chain is also secure, and it'd require a considerable amount of effort to break it. So, it's a lose-lose for a thief really. If you use this, your bike is not likely gonna be stolen...at least not in one piece, anyways. If I were a bike thief, I'd probably just disassemble the whole darn bike and sell it for parts.

      Leaving it exposes it to being attacked while it would seem least conspicuous for someone to be doing so, as well as late in the night when nobody is around, they just have to do it in a way that you could not notice with simple inspection and do the rest once you lock the bike.

    Disk detainers seem to be the way to go, the rest of the world is finally catching up with Abloy. Disk detainer locks can be made to tensioned anywhere in the core, putting the driver disk half way up the core, would make the design of a picking tool difficult.
