I hope you found the video useful. There is a lot more material on the U.S Aleuts as opposed to the Russian Aleuts, so anything I have incorrect please correct me!
There is a movie called Aleut Story narrated by Martin Sheen, it’s about the internment of the Aleuts by the US during WW2. When I was in high school, I wrote a paper on Japanese occupation (Aleutian islands) of America when I came upon some knowledge. I researched a lot of books I and accidentally found about three paragraphs. Remember, the Americans official story was to relocate them for their safety, and another part of it was the Americans were afraid they might possibly side with the Japanese against the United States, because of their Asian like features. Little was known about it, however, when I got out of the service, one my coworkers, dad was interred and that’s where he was either drafted, or enlisted in the United States Army. A lot of them wouldn’t talk about it, however, he told me some of the people just died because they couldn’t take being removed from their homes and take to the strange place. They couldn’t adjust. It’s a sad chapter.
Oh wow! I need to check that movie out, thank you for the recommendation. The story of the Aleuts is smeared with sad chapters like this - I'm glad to see the resurgence of the Aleut people (at least on the American side of things).
Thank you for your interest 😊 growing up I've only learned about the American side of my people. I learned more and want to do some of my own research now. 2:47 - 2:58 the voice clip is Western dialect I believe, and also my cousin's cousin speaking it 😉😂
I love working with mushrooms very intresting that they are shamans. I had gender issues at the start of my life while growing my hair, slowly getting a nose piercing. Love Russian language so much.
Just to clarify: that 'only' was to emphasis the death toll in the US internment camps, not to diminish the suffering. I hope you found the video interesting.
I read that the Aleuts of the Western Alaskan peninsula and the eastern third of the Aleutian Islands are mixed unlike the Aleuts of the western and central thirds of the Islands
To be honest, I don't believe that division is that clear. A large number of Aleuts across the board will have some form of mixed heritage (Whether with European, Koryak, Yukaghir, Inuit etc). Perhaps the book meant culturally pure?
I love the history and the calling out of american government for putting the aleuts in internment camps unnecessarily but it feels like you excused russian empire extortion of the aleuts because the people doimg it were just doing their job. Not sure if i misread that from you but if that is indeed what you meant then i would argue getting paid for doing atrocity doesnt excuse it
Oh, no, absolutely not. The Russian approach to the Aleuts was incredibly mercenary. My point in the video was simply that, betwen Russian Imperialism and American Imperialism, the latter was (arguably) worse due to the greater levels of discrimination or afflication - Russian Imperialism was pretty bad too!
Your video is sadly full of incorrect information and mispronunciation. Unangax̂, which is the actual name of our people, does not mean "The People." I am interested what your sources are.
Oh dear! I'm sorry to hear you're displeased with the video. I've used a few different sources for this information (some online, others in print) but do appreciate the feedback. It's invaluable in encouraging me to be more thorough in my research and take more care with my fact gathering.
Apologies, it's something of a force of habit. In the vernacular, an 'American' is understood to be a citizen of the United States of America and thus 'America' is understood to be the United States of America. Glad you found the video useful!
I am Aleutian, as well as Navajo, Cree and Muskogee. I am do desperate to learn more about Aleutian culture and history! Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I really have to ask if you have taken a DNA-test
@@Arnep08 why do you have to ask? What is the purpose of your question?
@@shay1501 I am really interested in geneology and would love to see an Aleut result
I am Aluet, my mom is full Aluet Native. Thanks for sharing this information. My mom grew up in Alaska.
I hope you found the video useful. There is a lot more material on the U.S Aleuts as opposed to the Russian Aleuts, so anything I have incorrect please correct me!
Have you ever taken a DNA test?
Some Ainu say they visited North kurils from the coast of kommando islands and they behave similar
Thank you for all of this information. My great grandfather was a Aleut Russian Orthodox Priest . I would love to learn my language. 💙
It may be worth looking at some of the other comments in this video as several Aleut speakers have posted. Perhaps they could guide you better than I?
My great grandmother was full aleut. Ive always loved learning as much as i can about my ancestry and aleutian history
I hope this gives you a greater understanding of at least the Russian side of the Aleut story :)
As an American I am very happy to learn about Native Americans
Sad to say, I think this may be the sole mention of Native Americans on this channel!
And Native Siberians
Cannot wait for the Kamchatka episode

Lovely video, just discovered the channel and I’m loving it so far!
I'm glad you're finding it interesting - plenty more to come!

Ah, I see! Thank you (and your cousin) for your efforts. If you find I've missed anything important, do let me know!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I knew nothing about my race very interesting.

When you said, "only 17 died, in Hokkaido" that was 40% and my grandmother's people

So Aleuts have had many disputes with Eskimos, Amerindians, Europeans, And Metis
I wouldn't go quite as fas as that, but with Europeans, Chukchi, Koryaks and the Nicoleno tribe - definately.
You should talk about the kiril islands
Certainly intend to!
My grandma was from Unalaska, my other grandma was Attuan, I'm Atkan
Very cool!

Lets be honest, the US really likes to be seen as the heroes. This wasnt biased at all, it just tells us the way the Aleuts were really treated.

Very informative video but I just found it annoying how you kept calling the U.S America when America is a continent not a country nor a nationality!
