My boy is now 11 years old, he's still as fit as a fiddle and healthy. This brought tears too my eyes because I know I will never have another Sheltie pup @ 76 I am too old to commit myself to another, there have been 3 altogether over 42 year, every one just wonderful, but like all dogs they don´t teach themselves.
I don't think you're too old for another puppy. Someone else in these comments have said that they've plenty of friends they'd trust with their dog if the time comes
I lost my 13 year old in december...knew all the same tricks except "Pizza" id....I have had 4 shelties over the years since childhood...number 5 is coming in August and I'm 73!...Life without a sheltie is hard to imagine...if your health and circumstances are good, I encourage you to fill your life with a sheltie again!
I used to own a sheltie named Max who just passed away last year and this video made me so happy thinking of him and the same tricks I would teach him! Thank you for posting, brought a bittersweet smile to my face :)
These Dogs are the most intellegent, easy to work with Dogs out there. They are a real joy to be around with and they love their owners as well to. Always ready to please and are a good working Dog.
I lost my Sheltie of 17.5 years a week ago and this video gave me so much joy. She knew all of them except for item identification🥺🥺🥺 What amazing fur babies they are❤️
Wow, she got so old! 🤗🐶 I lost my sheltie this summer, she was only ten and a half... It was way too soon i think. What did you feed your dog? Mine got dry food, but I found out when she got kidney failure, that dry food actually can cause such problems! I had no idea, and thought I was giving her the best food... For my next sheltie I will make homemade dog food and hopefully she will have a long and healthy life 🐶♥️ They are such wonderful dogs! ♥️ I can hardly wait 'till May...!
I had a Sheltie for 16+ years. When we went to kindergarten obedience class, she was the "star". All the other dog owners were in awe of my Sheltie's ability to quickly learn and obey commands. The only real problem I had with my Sheltie was getting her housebroken. I thought it took forever, but suddenly one day, I came home and there was no surprise.
I adore this breed. I had one and was heartbroken when we lost him. They are not easy to find. I don’t care if I am old when I get another. Many of my friends I can trust to take him.
I remember being 13 and my parents coming in with our first dog. A puppy sheltie who fit in my two hands! Beautiful Ben! It used to take me over an hour once a week to brush him fully! He was so good. Now I'm much older and have a Jack Russell called Smudge! He's 13 but thinks he's a puppy! Dogs are such a joy! ❤️❤️❤️
I love Shelties, I've always wanted one...ever since I was little, really long, but I still don't have one. My parents simply won't allow it... and I'm already, yes, big enough❤❤❤
I have my fifth Sheltie, and she is so smart that even I am amazed that she often does what I tell her to do the very first time I tell her to do it, even with commands she hears for the first time. They have all been wonderful pets, and great around all kinds of kids.
I have only had one Sheltie in my life, but I will never forget Bear, I have to say of all the dogs, Bear was my favorite doggy. He's been gone for at least 17 years now, but I remember him as if he just left my life yesterday and even if that sounds sad...it's not! I loved him lots and he was my favorite friend of all the furry friends I've had.
My pup does the same tricks and also crawls along the floor. I also taught her to always sit and stay on my door mat. At age 5 or 6 months old she got loose from her harness and ran in our complex and across our parking lot street. I found her patiently sitting on my door mat waiting for me to catch up. I praised her and gave her a few treats on the mat and I hooked her back onto her harness all on that mat. Only then did we go inside. I've tried to teach her the importance of the mat as a symbol of a home base After each trip outside or coming home from errands she's always been taught to sit and shake hands while sitting on it. She's always recieved love, praise and a small treat for doing this I'm very proud she gets the significance of the front door mat as he safe home base if something like that ever happens again. Her name is Sia It means helper in Hebrew. The prettiest name i could think of with deep meaning to be my next service dog. It takes 18 months to 2 years to train a dog to help you doing service work. She's now 11 months old about 20 pounds.
People sometimes underestimate sheltie's. I have a sheltie and they are brilliant watchdogs and his bark is quite intimidating if someone comes to the door. The second sheltie we owned was very protective of us and even the postman was scared of him. We had to put a metal letter box on the inside of our door so our sheltie didn't try to bite his hand. On another occasion he lunged at a rottweiller when out for his work! And I'm not joking. Our 2nd one as mentioned was so brave. Bless him x
I have had 2 Shelties and 2 Long Haired Collies, when I was young. The Shelties were much more easily trained to do anything I wanted them to do. All the normal commands, sitting, roll over, stay. But I took it next step further and play Frisbee and catch every throw every time. Then bring back to me and drop it in my hand for the next throw. When we were done playing frisbee, I would say to him. OK let’s go put the frisbee away and put it right in the spot where it belonged! Next thing is too make him pick up and hand me any item with a bunch of items on the floor and he would grab the item I requested to fetch. One thing that probably are aware of is when these breed is teething is there ears will do straight up and if you don’t use Cod-liver Oil in the inside there ear to keep it cartilage soft during this period of teething! 😊
I miss my sheltie who passed away Friday, July 31, 2020. He was 12 1/2 year of age and weight 50lbs. He look like a mini Rough Collie. I want another one. I previous own 2 Rough Collies . This 1st Rough Collie passes away at the age of 12 in 1993. The 2nd Rough Collie passed away in 2007 from Nasal Cancer at the age of 14. I down sized and got my sheltie in March 2008.
My 11 lb. Sheltie Wylie (avi pic) went OTRB two months ago at 16. He was the most gentle, sweet pup I’ve ever known. I miss him lots. Your Simba is gorgeous and amazing!
My shetland sheepdog is amazingly well trained. Having been a personal dog training instructor for many years, having won several shows, and having taught in several training schools, I can honestly attest to the fact that the countless responsible dog owners out there (far outweighing the irresponsible minority in matters of statistics) are doing all they can to enjoy their pets in peace, despite those out there, sarcastically or otherwise, who seems to want to jump onto any anti-dog campaign out there because it suits their personal cause.
You have a beautiful sheltie puppy! I have always always wanted one, finally found one and the lady sold him before I could travel to her place which took three hours to get to her. I was devastated and cried for hours. Luck to find another breeder and brought that puppy. We adored that dog with all our hearts. He had some kind of heart problem and died shortly after he turned eight. I have rescued another dog, Jack Russell-corgi mix. And we love her. I want another Sheltie so bad I can’t stand it. They are not easy to find, and when you do, they cost a fortune. I will keep looking until my dying days.
Adorable! Had a Sheltie name Shep...My husband gifted him to me Christmas day and he died 14 years later on Christmas Eve 20 yrs ago at the hand of a bad Vet...I was both livid and heartbroken...cried for weeks...Simba is adorable and highly intelligent...Enjoy every year of love and fun with him. Shelties are great dogs and protectors of their family. :)
I’ve been through this pain when my schnauzer passed away. Dogs are incredible creatures and sometimes I wonder if we really deserve all the love they give us. We always try to remind ourselves to enjoy our days with him as much as we can
I thought of something I should mention because I found it rather amazing. I was really ill for awhile and I had to get someone to take care of Laddie. When I finally got to come home, Laddie was so happy. The amazing thing was, he remembered all the tricks I had taught him! I was so pleasantly surprised!
Brilliant, I loved every minute. I think it’s because you started training her when she was so young - and made it a game that it worked so well. Thank you for sharing
We just lost our 16 year old Sheltie, Isis last Thursday. I'm still in tears. We are working to find another to go with our 3-year old boy sheltie Sully. Shelties don't really do well alone, we have found, they need someone else to play with when mom/dad are busy. We'll be getting a puppy this summer and I'm planning on teaching that one a bit better than we did Spaz boy. My girl Shelties (Isis and Rhi) were both very well trained and behaved and served as service dogs to me. I'm going to be training the new one to help me.
I used to have big dogs - I'm on my 5th Sheltie and I'm never going back! All dogs are great - what counts is getting the dog that matches yourselves. A serious problems with Shelties is you want to have several dogs at the same time. The live a long time and it is "hell" saying goodbye to a dog that you had for almost 17 years like was the case with my last loss... I still miss the "old Shelties". Once your dog follows the request, and you ckick/and or treat, always praise with a "good boy", "good girl", or "good dog!". Giving them treats is fine but also follow with the "good dog" as it praises them whenever you don't have a treat! This dog is so smart and trainer/owner has such a good rapport with it... I had a Sheltie/Golden Retriever mix named "Simba" as well. He looked like a shorter, fluffier golden, with a sharper snout, upward curving tail and the classic Sheltie dorito-shaped ears xD. Still, most people would think he was a golden retriever at first glance, but his personality was 100% sheltie! I love this breed so much
Taught our Sheltie Charlie, to sit, down (lay down), speak (bark), over (roll over), shake (both paws, and the hardest was to stand (balance standing on hind legs). The longest he stood and held balance was 3 to 5 seconds. Also taught him to chase balls and retrieve. Could not ever teach him to return to my hand. He always return to a spot to my left and placed on the ground about 2 steps every time no matter. A glitch in his mental programming I guess. I was cool with it; I needed the exercise anyway and Charlie must have thought the same after the running he did. I can see his thoughts saying, “I’ll make him move too”. LOL 😆
Hoping that you are all safe...not sure where you are relative to the wildfires in Australia...Sending your video to a friend who recently lost his 16 year old Sheltie...this will warm his heart!
The first Sheltie I had was fate. My mom picked him out. The Lady we bought him from handed me the paperwork. We never had an AKC Dog before. I asked what whelped was. That's the dogs Birthday. He was born on my Birthday, but a different year. Fate. We named him Laddie. My Mother's parents were from Scotland so the name was perfect. Then came Tara. I rescued her. They were inseparable. Very Very loyal dogs. So smart. Protective. I miss them so very much. I pray someday I can get another one. Thank you.🦊
Such a beautiful dog and extremely smart. We recently got a Sheltie from the same breeder as you guys! Ian showed us this video on how quickly they pick up tricks :-)
This is awesome to watch! I have one who is 2.6 yrs and he’s very smart. He learns fast! I need to teach him more now, that I am able! That way he can reach his full potential! Thanks for posting! ❤️
I have a Sheltie named Laddie. He is sooo smart. He learned to fetch in one hour. He can perform all the tricks shown in this video. He's 10 years old now. and still looks like a puppy. His only fault is he loves to bark, a lot! He is the sweetest.
Adrian N Nearly every state has a Sheltie Rescue. I got my last one from there and have been thrilled with her choice of me. We are compatible, and she has learned her independence and self sufficiency. She is never more than a foot from me, favoring the spot under my recliner’s footrest. She is a hoot, making me laugh aloud several times a day. If you don’t have time or patience to train a puppy, I encourage you to contact a rescue center.
I have had three Shelties in my life and they were by FAR the most intelligent dogs I have ever known. They can do anything but fix your computer.
i think that's on your side, you should've thought them to fix ur pc bad training there.
🖕
Your right...my Sheltie tried to fix my computer and, even though he did OK with my stereo, he just couldn't figure the computer out!!
so envious i also want a sheltie but im allergic
I taught mine to retrieve documents from the printer.

I don't think you're too old for another puppy. Someone else in these comments have said that they've plenty of friends they'd trust with their dog if the time comes
you should consider a senior dog. Not as much work as a pup, but still a great companion. I'm 66 and just got a puppy, lots of work, but so sweet.

Some one once said “Shelties would write a murder mystery for a treat”.
Sometimes I think Simba will open the fridge and help himself one day...
They do.love their treats. ❤

Watching this video reminded me of my mother's dogs, two of which are Shelties and how they grew up. Simba is gorgeous!
I've had three beautiful shelties, brings back so many sweet sweet memories.
No, thank you for posting, sweeter breed never lived and sooooo good to see gentle people with this sweet animal.
The cutest ♥️♥️
I have a sheltie too, he turns 2 on June 5th! He knows many tricks too, and he is very smart but dumb, the perfect buddy for me😂 💕

I love to hear this ! Simba is 2 as of today. I hope he reaches the 10 year mark as well as Laddie ;).
There is this dog that I want to adopt and he is a Sheltie crossed with a Siberian Husky so if I will adopt him, I hope he will be this intelligent :)
Hope the adoption went well! As a Sheltie Husky mix he'll certainly have a *lot* of energy so hope you have fun with him!
Great job on training your sheltie. He's a beauty
うぁ〜❗️めちゃくちゃカワイイ🥰
very cute 😍 great 🐶
I'm so jealous, I got my sheltie at a little over 3 months old. Learning tricks are so much easier when you start younger. Will keep trying!!!
These puppies don't need a clicker, they live to make you happy.
Omg he is so cute and smart! You are great dog owners ❤
Love sheltie. She is so pretty.
Sheltie/Shetland sheepdog are soooooooooo cute!!!
Thanks for the video. My two Shelties were the best little dogs (family members) in every way. My mission now is to find another one.
He's so cute!! And a sable too. They are gorgeous!!!
She is so cute and so intelligent although she is so youg. Thanks for share this video on You Tube.

Looks like fun!! My sheltie would look at me and say "you want me to do what???"
