    So agree! It’s either you get bases, manufacture, or you have to hire employees to keep up with production. Gotta do what’s best for you

      Absolutely!! No one judges big cosmetic brands for manufacturing so we shouldn’t be so hard on individual people in the handmade space! 🥰

    As someone who makes my own base, I *completely* understand not wanting to handmake it. It is so much work and such a huge use of your time. The biggest batch I can make is 4000 grams with the equipment size I have right now and just making it is well over an hour of work, plus having to wait for it to cool down overnight before you use it? Ugh, so much time. On a similar note, I wonder if people who have an issue with a base also have an issue with folks who make melt and pour soap? That's a base and those folks can still make some really amazing products with it and they're still handmade businesses! I wonder where the line gets drawn... I don't process my own coconut oil, I purchase that, so does that count? LOL Who knows! Someone is always gonna be unhappy, just keep doing you!

      I give you SO much credit for making it yourself!! You’re right that someone is always going to say something negative but at the end of the day we are all making art! Appreciate your attitude and hope more soapmakers are like you. 🥰

      I am still a newbie (1 yr) but I don't think M&P or base soap is considered handmade ... because it's not handmade by "me." Although, I don't make my own lye so that makes me reconsider what handmade actually means. ETA: In that case all soap is handmade. Either people mixing ingredients or people telling machines how to mix the ingredients. I prefer my way of making soaps.😌

    Most people I know of use a base for their whipped soaps. What you add into the base is what makes it unique.

    Regarding the use of a base. I use a base, I make no apologies for it at all and here's why: When I looked at my base recipe and then compared it to the pre-made base they where the same, so why was I making more effort for myself? Don't ever make apologies for your standards and as a business owner yourself you'll know that time is money so if you can buy a piece of machinery or have an outside company print your labels or buy a base in order to save time then that's money in the bank. As an example I make so much cold process soap it was taking me an age every day to weigh out my oils so to elevate that issue I purchase an oil melter which now I fill once a week, now I can literally make twice the amount of soap in a day, money in the bank.

    I totally agree with you. We don't handmake our fragrance oils, preservatives etc, granulated sugar, baking soda....shall I go on? You are doing AMAZING!!! I still think you should take the credit and call your products handmade.

      Exactly! I just learned that many bakeries use baking mixes to ensure consistency and be more efficient, but put their own spin on things to still add value, etc. now that I’ve outsourced I’m 100% happy with my decision for so many reasons!

    This reminds me of people who get upset about bakers who doctor & use boxed cake mixes. If you are enhancing it, customizing it, being honest about ingredients/process - I think it is fine. There will be customers who prefer to know crafters are doing things "from scratch" but there will also be some who don't care. Same thing with all natural/organic vs. not. But this debate is big amongst homebakers as well.
    Your reasoning makes sense & adds important thoughts into consideration.

    • @caitlinblue
      @caitlinblue  Год назад +1

      You’re so right about the home baking. I personally don’t care how it got made as long as the finished product is delicious (or in the case of soap luxurious) thanks for having such a positive attitude! 🥰

      @@caitlinblue no problem. RUclips notifications are weird sometimes....and you have been MAJORLY busy :) I agree. I think for a lot of people it's a gateway into becoming a formulator and maker and we definitely shouldn't gatekeep hobbies or fandoms or anything like that simply because someone looks to ease their way in or do things with bases so they understand what the product is supposed to feel like!

  • @UltraObscene84
    @UltraObscene84 Год назад

    It is definitely handmade using bases because you have your own spin with adding ingredients. Not everyone who makes body products has time to make certain stuff from scratch...you'd have to hire folks to help out and it's not always doable financially.

    Thank you so much for your videos ! I started making my own base recently because the one I used went up x2 $$ 😢 but I’m wondering about the air quality as a maker .. if it’s not ok for scrubs but it’s ok for everything else, is the scrubs extra sensitive to that kind of treatment for safety? I always consider myself safe and super careful but my air is not purified 😢 now I’m thinking I should turn back to a base, being sanitary with selling products gives me major anxiety! 😅

    • @caitlinblue

    Do you add extra preservative when using bases?

    • @caitlinblue
      @caitlinblue  Год назад

      If you’re adding other things to the base you need to add more preservative for sure. You should identify the preservative used in the base for consistency and make sure you’re following the recommended usage rate for that preservative so you’re not over-preserving which can also be irritating.

    As a maker I do hate the ideas of a base because you never knew what’s in them or if you do it’s usually trash like sls … my company is all natural so I don’t use any synthetic are artificial ingredients so no fragrance, no bases … so maybe that’s why I feel that way … but I also feel like you have to do what works for you and as long as you are honest about the ingredients you don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why you use the ingredients you do … especially if your customers like your products
