In 90s I listened to that In The Kingdom album over and over learning the solos. 25 years later I’m sitting on the couch and suddenly - ‘hmm I wonder if Rex Carrol has a youtube channel?’...awesome!

I'd say it's a pretty fair claim... Along with EVH. Eddie came first, but Yngwie came shortly after and pretty much single-handedly brought the neo-classical style to the forefront of heavy metal guitar in the 80's and was the first real "technical wizards" in Heavy Metal guitar. The only guys who demonstrated that level of fretboard mastery prior were jazz fusion guys like Al Di Meola or John McLaughlin. Every 80's hair metal shredder who followed either copped a little bit off of the neo-classical sound, or Eddie's hard rock bluesy shred style, and the best shredders had a masterful command of both styles (ex. Jason Becker). One things for sure though... "Shred guitar" wouldn't be the same without guys like Yngwie or EVH. They were both innovators and virtuosos. The two most powerful influences on lead-guitar playing in the 80's.

There are shredders in every style of music. Yngwie definitely influenced more rock guitarists than anyone.

Rex is one of the best shredders ever. Please, what pickups are these and what amp and pedals, if any, you used in this and other videos. Great tone! Keep on rocking, man.

My guess would be yes to the poll question. There were plenty of influential shredders before him, but Malmsteen brought with him an influx of other shred guitarists.

True. I think shred is about playing fast, complicated leads. Yngwie is second only to Chuck Norris when it comes to tasty shred guitar.

I think Uli Roth is probably the original shredder, followed by EVH. It's just that Yngwie brought something distinctive and unique to the table with his neo-classical influences.

There were others before Yngwie, but I would agree that Yngwie is definitely the King of shred.
    Love your work, Rex.
You still sound old school metal, even after all these years.
    Respect 🤘
By the way, what're your thoughts on the current state of our nation?
It seems as if Christ spirit has lifted, and we're on a downward spiral into the abyss.
There really are no second chances, and I'm wondering if you still feel the same way?
    God bless you, brother.

True... props to Uli but ...Yngwie broke through the barrier between great player and guitar god.
Players tapped before Ed, but Eddie also broke through to the other side.
It's not who was first , but who captured the imagination and transcended mere mortals and move on to influence generations to come.

Paganini is the FATHER OF SHRED

  • @mikebardenmusic
    @mikebardenmusic 8 лет назад

Nice playing, Rex, as always! I don't think he's the father of guitar shredding though...he got his inspiration from Blackmore, Hendrix, Paganini, and Bach. And EVH is a shredder that was around before Yngwie. And of course you can trace shredding back to late Romantic virtuoso players like Lizst and Paganini. Still though, Malmsteen synthesized it all into a neoclassical rock package that really took things to a new level.
