- Michigan State pulled off a stunner in 2001, better known as "Clockgate". The Spartans beat #6 Michigan with one second on the clock after Jeff Smoker threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Duckett to seal the upset.

Speaking as a Michigan fan, I never saw the controversy. No tenths on that clock and it seems reasonable that there was a tenth or two left in the game clock. It's as close as they come. Just a tough loss.
The one objective Michigan fan on the planet.
@@HockeyTownHooligan5 outliers come in all forms I Suppose
He had yhe ball in his hands with 1 sec left... game was fucking over
I’m not a fan of either team and the game was so over. Michigan got fucked over
If there's no tenths on the clock why is it reasonable to assume there were any left? You said it yourself there ARE NO TENTHS OF SECONDS on the GAME CLOCK. Wake up. (Not a Michigan fan)
When I first saw this, I couldn't believe he got the spike off in time. Like the stadium had a delayed one second count. I timed this myself multiple times and saw that he gets it off with 1-3 tenths of a second to spare. They were really lucky.
Yup, I just timed it myself and got the same results you did; he gets the spike down somewhere around 1/4 of a second before 0. Not sure if the game clock was supposed to stop the moment the ball hits the ground, or when the official signals to stop the clock. If it was the later situation, hard to believe that the official signals and timekeeper reacts in the span of 1/4 of a second.
My friend Tyler and I watched this game 17 years ago. Fantastic finish! Despite the loss Jermaine Gonzales had a good game for the Wolverines. Classic game among classic friends!
TEEE JAY DUCKETT = Legend 🏆
Caught the pass on 4th down and got open in the end zone to win the game
I had the privilege of watching Jeff Smoker play in HS. He made clutch plays all the time. His HS ran the veer and some Delaware wing-T. Evident by his nice set-up run second to last play.
I almost died under the dog pile at the end 😅
My first ever attending of an MSU-UofM Football game. I must have been around 11. I called this play the greatest moment I had ever experienced in sports all the way until 2015...Whoa he has trouble with the snap!
Whoa theres 12 men on the field!
I was at the game as well, as a middle schooler. Unforgettable
@@pollopicante Still the loudest I have experienced Spartan Stadium
@@johnnyrico3515 that was this years theme 😂
20 years ago. Time files..
There was 0.1 seconds left when he downed the ball...
I remember watching this at the Harrison Roadhouse when I was 14. The roof blew off that place!
At least it wasn't won a five downs by Colorado in their national championship season
I was at this game; it was glorious.
For the longest time I thought we got cheated. But if you want to check yourselves, slow it down to .25, every second will be 4 seconds. he spikes the ball in 3.22 after it hits 1 meaning there's still time. Nice game!
It shouldn’t have even been relevant - I believe earlier in the drive, MSU was charged their final timeout when they shouldn’t have been, due to a Michigan penalty having stopped the clock at the same time. If the ref had called that correctly, MSU would have been able to use their final timeout with a second left, and would not have needed to line up and spike the ball.
The entire drive was crazy not just the last play.
Watching this because MSU hosts Michigan again tomorrow!
What happened? 😂
how long does the rulebook say someone has to hold on to the ball once it's caught in the endzone? Is it different for endzone catches compared to field catches? Because he did drop it very soon. even though I think I would count as a catch
I think the controversy was when the ball was snapped and spiked within 1 second to stop the clock. The catch and TD wasn't the controversy.
Incomplete..he never maintained possession.
Not sure what y'all mean...sure looks to me like he has the ball tucked in his right arm as he is being piled on by his teammates
Nevermind, I see it now... Bad video quality lol. I think it was knocked free by his celebrating teammates as it's being signaled TD
i can watch this last play all day LOVE IT
If people actually did their research (which more than 80% of you Michigan fans didn't) they actually conducted a test of the clock after the game. 7 different media outlets said there was a hundredth of a second left on the clock. But the scoreboard or TV scoreboard won't show that. You can have 0.9, 0.8, even 0.01 seconds left on the clock but the scoreboard will show 0. It's simple time keeping. Also in 2004, the Detroit News did a review and said there was not one outcome where the clock keeper got it wrong. Michigan didn't get screwed, you Michigan fans are butt hurt. Maybe if your team didn't make pathetic mistakes on the drive prior to that play, it wouldn't have come down to that. Your own student paper even said that
That was the longest second I've seen in my life, sparty always needs luck to beat Michigan.
@@drugsmadilla lol luck. Guess you don't know how time works. Did you know the closest Nascar finish was .002? That means that is 2 thousandth of a second, closer than the one hundredth that the media outlets calculated to be left on the clock in the game. Imagine...not knowing there are tenths, hundredths and thousandths within a second and then claiming the team "lucked" their way into the win. Well maybe, msu wouldn't have been that close if Michigan didn't have 12 men on the field prior to that to keep the drive going. Maybe you should be blaming your own team rather than the timekeeper
Personally sat with another friend (a Wolverine fan) and timed it over and over to rub it in his face. Each time had 1-1.3 sec left. He acknowledged there was no controversy until the weasels lost
It wasn't so much the clock issue, but if I recall, didn't the refs call a controversial PI penalty on Michigan on 4th down earlier in the drive that gave Michigan State a new set of downs and keep possession? I thought there was a longer video on here somewhere showing that but I can't find it now.
it wasn't a wrong PI call, it was a correct too many men on the field call.
@@cosmosaic8117 No, we were both wrong. It was a hands to the face penalty on 4th and 16 on a receiver that was on the other side of the field from where the ball went.
The call appears to be correct, but you wonder how many times this is probably missed in games. It's at the very start of this video.
ruclips.net/video/gt0brDy3EFE/видео.html
@@blacksabfan It was both. First hands to the face and then too many men on the field.
@@cosmosaic8117 Right, but my initial comment specifically said it was a 4th down penalty that gave them a new set of downs. I misremembered the exact penalty but remembered enough that it involved a receiver and a cornerback.
The other penalty didn't happen on 4th down and wasn't the penalty I was referring to, nor was it the penalty that had the most impact on the end result.
@@blacksabfan Game will be 20 years ago on November 3. Not sure who you're rooting for but it was my first ever time attending this rivalry. Was my most memorable moment at Spartan Stadium in 22 years of going to games. Only thing that tops it for me was 2017 I went to the Big House. I didn't attend today's game but watched it on TV. Go Green!!!!!! That's 10/14 since Mike Hart's "little brother" comment...
L O L at Bo Schembechler being 18-3 vs MSU
I don’t see the controversy
Well what's the controversy? That wasn't stopped early
Rico's legs!!!
I STILL love how Mighty MEEEECHEGAN fan is whining about this, 18 years later.
WE love how Michigan state is back to being a trash program as they should be :)
@@TrentG23 LOL while U-M remains a legend only in its mind!
You have to cheat us to beat us.
@@saml724 imagine losing to Rocky Lombardi 🤣🤣😭
@@TrentG23 WE love Ichigan looking flat and lifeless the entire 2020 season, like the whole team couldn't wait to get away from each other. Maybe Harbaugh should've made sure the season actually got canceled before popping off about how great his team looked.
27-24
Jeff Smoker a Manheim Central product... too bad he couldn’t stop boozing
I just hope simon doesn't have the same issue
It is not obvious or egregious...fraction of a second one way or the other. Nothing like the TV commentator described it.
On the other hand, there seemed to be a slow restart of the clock on the final first down at the 17 seconds mark.
In the end analysis, M should not put themselves in a position to lose.
They did.
They lost.
Looks like the clock was stopped correctly. As a Michigan fan there should not be a complaint about this one.
Smoker hikes just after 19 and spikes the ball. Clock stopped at 17. On the last play, Smoker hikes the ball pretty demonstrably after it hits one... Clock doesn't move a fuckin tick. That's why.
You have a very similar spike less than three minutes previously in real time. It took a second plus to hike and spike. But that last play before the TD, the clock miraculously doesn't move off of 1 second
It is possible that the official timekeeper had the world's fastest reflexes. No reason he shouldn't.
😮😮😮
College football flashback
I ripped a pillow in half at the end of this game
*TRANSLATION:* “I had a hissy fit temper tantrum because my overrated team lost fair and square! 😭” .
This game is known as Clockgate because on the final MSU drive, the referees incorrectly charged the Spartans with a timeout AND incorrectly walked off penalty yardage, costing MSU 4 yards and a 1st down that would have stopped the clock.
Luckily, TJ Duckett's TD catch as time expired rendered these errors moot
Wolverine tears taste so sweet.
One of the most exciting sports moments of my life !
Tj Duckett!!!!!!!!!
The only people who thought he didn't spike it in time were the most rabid and unreasonable Michigan fans...Including their radio announcers.
2002 0:01 on the clock 49-3 Michigan
The Big Brother not even a fan of anybody in the Big 10 but hasn't Michigan lost like 10 of the last 12 vs Michigan State and 15 of the last 16 vs Ohio State
LITTLE SISTER! #GoGreen
Wolverines live in the past. Sad.
Doctor X it is sad, and not in a bad or sarcastic way. Michigan's football program seems like it is still struggling from the loss to App State 11 years ago.
NCR Trooper including 2017 MSU is 8 of 12 over Michigan over that 12 year period. Worse against OSU.
Didn’t complete the process.
everytime michigan loses they have to have an excuse ...like this video ...clockgate my ass
Was this a playoff game or special in any way? Reaction seems huge for a win over Michigan if it's just regular season
Michigan v Michigan State is a big rivalry game.
They didn't have a playoff back then. This was the regular season matchup. This is just the #2 rivalry in the country. This game about blood to everyone involved from players to fans.
Hand me a W
Brent musburger Gary danielson jack arute
Payback for Clockgate I (Michgan vs. Washington St. in the Rose Bowl)
Woodson was interfered with on Washington State's long pass to get across midfield, the ref tugged at his flag then put it back in his pocket, that was a make up call.
They would have needed to complete a hail mary still. Not a play from the 2 yard line.
Watch out Haygood, Watch out! version is so much better 🤣😂😅😆
The Michigan defense was completely clueless on that last play. Wandering around like idiots.
Very similar to a Jim Harbaugh coached team
Incompete. He never maintained possession.
Classic!!! Go GREEN BABY!!! We own this rivalry now! 10-4 SINCE DANTONIO TOOK OVER!!! TUCK COMIN BABY!!!
😂😂😂
GO GREEN!!!!
Jeff Smoker is my dude. Drank with him soo many times. Cool ass dude!
It wasn't the clock but he didn't catch the ball at the end he didn't complete the process of the catch
Hell he dropped it lol not even a catch didnt hold onto it near long enough LMAO
I have watched this a thousand times and i never noticed how fast he drops it :P oops :P
This was 2001 NCAA ... not 2013 NFL.
LOL this was long before that rule was ever applied!! They first used it on Calvin Johnson in 2010.
The ball is knocked out by a teammate celebrating a few milliseconds after it is signaled a TD
where a title says so much, how about love in retirement for charles woodson and desmond howard with a face for joe flacco and by god how can you float a duck so well down nine to eight
"That was criminal, Jim!" -UM's whiney baby radio snowflake crybaby L'il Frankie Beckman
They absolutely cheated
Final score: Refs 26, Michigan 24
Final score: Wolverines butt-hurt, Spartans Victorious
alert alert, another toxic michigan fan
Im pretty sure the refs didn't force UofM to have 12 men on the field during that last drive. Shot yourselves in the foot.

Thats why there the most winningest program of all time-sarcasm
too bad you don't know how to spell they're*...you shop at Walmart?
And he also can't use proper grammer. "Most winningest" smh
I will always remember where I was. I was at my job at a bakery. I was sweeping the floor and had the game on the radio. I stopped cleaning as I heard “ 5 ... 4 ...3 ... 2 ...1 ... ... ... ... he spiked it.”
There was not time to get the play off, let alone to spike the ball.
There’s a reason that they changed the time keeper, and that’s because Spartan Joe cheated.
the big ten reviewed the play later and determined that a tenth of a second remained
Death, taxes, MSU winning when they were the worse team and got bailed out by officials.
MSU needed 60:01 to win this game
