- As Typhoon Mawar smashed into the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam Wednesday, the storm packed a powerful punch with punishing winds of up to 240 km per hour and torrential rain.
Mawar slowly passed over the Western Pacific island Thursday after battering the U.S. territory. The storm cut power to all but 1,000 of the island’s 52,000 homes and businesses, according to the Guam power authority. The storm also toppled trees and flipped cars.
It is the most powerful storm to hit Guam in years. There are no early reports of any injuries or deaths.
