I have got to get an SSB bar. My right shoulder is a wreck from years of teaching tumbling and gymnastics. I am sure this type of bar will allow me the volume I need. It helped me tremendously the first time I saw you using the straps for a front squat. My mobility is good, but the pain from my R. rotator cuff during normal front and back squats is insane.
I’ve low barred for ages now with PL training and meets. Just about to take my BJJ as priority now so have moved over to high bars and front squats. Is it normal to be really weak at these? I’ve low barred 210kg before and I’d say my high bar is probably only 140-150kg max. I’m also working on my clean and snatch, wondering if over head squats would be good for BJJ, less CNS stress from lower loads and tonnes of core and balance?
@@SzatStrength thanks Coach Joe! And Congrats on your blue belt! One of the best feelings having that belt taken off and a new one tied on am I right?☺️
Great vid. I also train bjj, do you think 4x20 squat and deadlift is benefit for bjj? Some of the best guys train 4x20 for all body parts but I don’t know about squat and deadlift. Thanks 👍🏼
Hey Coach. Anything that might help us less flexible guys? I struggle to lock my legs in closed guard making passing really easy. Especially if I'm drilling with a bigger guy.
Now that Bjj has hit the McDojo scene you get a belt for turning up, but some greats got to black belt in 4 years. But the truth is in the roll, no hiding, and it doesn’t matter what colour belt you’re wearing. Coach has sent in brown and black belts wearing white belts into our class, pretending to be noobs.
Belts will mean less and less over time as a result of the popularity of the sport. The only real means you have of evaluating people is how they: 1. Perform in competition 2. Perform against competitors
Got a video subject suggestion Joey. How to predict bad grappling partners and how to negate over zealous partners from quickly jacking up your elbows etc with arm bars and americanas etc. Neck cranks from idiots with full commitment is another fave.
I love front squats because I feel cool doing them and the bonus sweet feeling of gasping for air with a crushed windpipe. But to be honest, I feel more and more like the juice is not worth the squeeze. I'm not sure the stimulus is vastly superior/different compared to a good ol' high bar squats - I'm not denying it is a different beast altogether, but most people can back squat more than they can front squat (for possibly wrong reasons, but that's not the point), and I wonder if it's not better to just squat with a heavier high bar and narrower stance if that's what you are after. Of course, if you practice Oly, then FS are a requirement, but for combat athletes? I'm less and less convinced. I'm way more convinced by the SSB, definitely. Not for the mobility requirements, although it's good for a lot of people with banged up shoulders or elbows, but for the unique weight placement and dynamic of holding to these handles that literally shift the weights if you act on them, intentionally or not (which can be a tool to challenge you dynamics, or a funny way to make your lift harder if you get out of position inadvertently). Plus that bar is so versatile...dang this video is not helping me resist the urge to press that "Order" button haha.
@@SzatStrength I honestly thought when you mentioned the Bugez a week ago, the videos were going to be posted within 3 days. Listen, I know you would be impatient too if the Bugez was on the line.
Good to remind your viewers that "rolling" is offense/defense grappling training with a partner. It's more than simply tumbling in another man's arms. That would "cuddling". 😉😄
I’m just gonna say for me why. Less lower back fatigue, less overall weight so less systemic fatigue, and more upright torso translates more to takedowns
@@Mimsie As an athlete myself who mainly did low bar squats for several years and never had elbow or low back pain either, and recently decided to switch to high bar ATG squats, I agree and think they are better for Athletics overall. I’ve thought about it a lot and I think it has to do with 1.) It requires more ankle and hip mobility (at least for me) and 2.) I think the kind of quad and glute activation you get translates to Athletics better. As well as just being a more realistic position for non-strength sports. Meaning you will never throw your hips way back in sports like you do in the low bar squat. Cal Dietz has a lot of very interesting information on this kind of stuff. I know that sounds pretty bro-sciency, it’s just what I’ve noticed and felt since switching.

Love the SSB!!!!
I’ve been a big fan of the belt squat for avoiding shoulder problems as well.
More of these bjj strength training content please!
I want you to roll with Zach Talender!
Would be fun

Praying for your recovery Joe!!
Congrats on the blue belt💪 As a bjj competitor, your videos are extremely helpful
Thank you so much!
Congrats on the blue belt Coach Joe! Great content as usual, I recently got into BJJ!

Congratulations on the Blue belt coach! I just got mine this summer too! Now to stay the course. Keep it up and thanks for the tips coach.

I’m way weaker with high bar squats. But a lot of that is range of motion needed for full depth. But that’s just me.
Did over head squats help u at all with fatigue management?
I love that shirt!!
Thoughts on Zercher Squats?
Good too!

How come some people bet their blue belt in 1 year and he got is and 2 1/2 years? Do some coaches just hand out belts?
