15 years ago in highschool my art teacher let me roam the halls and outside grounds for photography class. I took that opportunity to sample all kinds of noises by sticking my headphones into the record input of my Sony MD. That's basically the story of how I got into field recording and ambient noise composition. Can't wait to watch this video tonight. Love your work Hainbach
I really appreciate that you showed a dead end and said you weren't vibing with the sound. It's important that some of these ideas don't always work out the way we hope in our heads. Great tricks to use. I'm excited to bounce back between cassette tape and minidisc. The Sony MD you added also has a 2nd out that I'm full of ideas on how to use.
Thank you! Dead ends and failing are a huge part of creating music. Editing everything to only the best result creates the wrong impression of the whole process.
I remember getting great results with coils (pickup) sniffing Minidiscs reading, writing etc. (instead of contact mic). I heavily used MD back in the days and remember them being super unreliable. Fun Fact: in the future they will be used to record peoples memories (according to Strange Days from 1995).
1) So sorry I sold my minidisc recorder years ago to a theater. 2) I still have the discs and starting feeling an urge to buy a recorder again... 3) Worth trying it with my old, skippable CD player! Thank you for another inspirational video, Hainbach!
Watching this channel makes me want to make another ambient track Watching this specific video makes me want to incorporate you saying "it sounds like some sort of space toilet" into it
So happy another minidisc video the day after my minidisc players arrived!! (Along with a surprise very early arrival of my Tascam 414) I am very excited to try these glitch and random techniques on my own tapes. I don’t play piano, but I play acoustic guitar, trumpet, flute and am now learning saxophone. I play classical as well as jazz, and I feel that recording these instruments on a 4 track at half-speed on tape, and then fast forwarding on the minidisc would sound really crazy. I’m new to creating electronic music, but have been an acoustic player most of my life...and I’m looking to find the perfect marriage of both. Glitching, randomizing, and then filtering through effects pedals should really take short acoustic compositions to the next level. Thank you for sharing these techniques, and I expect to be visiting your patreon page soon to say thanks!! Also, to share an idea back, I had seen a video in which someone had recorded a click track on the right channel of a cassette while the music was recorded in mono going through the left...this way he could sync a Volca Beats with his 4 track recorder’s tape speed control. This is a fantastic idea, but taking it to the random/minidisc technique level...if you have a click track recorded on the right audio channel of a minidisc recording, and chop it and play it on random, would it send an offbeat random click track for syncing Volcas and pocket operators to the randomized audio signal?? I haven’t been able to try it...for now just sharing a theory
Great to see someone liking minidiscs and as always the breakdown of your process. I've had a Denon DMD-1000 since 98 and still going strong. The HHB minidisc recorder I had gave up back in 2010 but still recorded quite a few albums and was great for field recordings. I'll have to look into the portable ones you've mentioned in parts 1 & 2.
I got a fondness for mini disks because I grew up poor and got one for Christmas when I wanted an mp3 player in the early 00's when everyone forgot about em already, and I'm way stoked that you can use them as musical tools!!
I read in my research that in the early 2000 many Minidisk players where made for MP3 playback that could not record. Might have been one of them? Good thing is that now all Minidisk recorders are cheap and plentiful, which makes them very valid music tools. With two kids and working full time as a musician I have to be thrifty. :-)
Love how you add depth to these flattened lofi n wobbly recordings. Tasteful mix of analog and digital as well. Just got the fx. I was completely lost for 2 hours w reverb springs as the only source of sound. Would of lasted longer if my trance wasn’t broken by my severely koma disturbed chihuahua reaping Hc vengeance by 10,000 licks. Fun device.
Absolutely, a lovely box of tricks. Depth is indeed something that can get tricky with these sounds - too much and they loose their impact, too little and the sound nasty.
piano texture painting level is so high in this video. Audiotrip into the childhood inside the low orbit toilet. The best thing that happened to me this day.
If you like exploring Minidiscs I'd recommend picking up a Tascam 564 for it has a pause playback mode you can play through on the jog wheel backwards and forwards. It's essentially a micro-looper that sounds beautifully unlike anything else I've heard before.
This exactly the sort of stuff I’ve been looking for after recently falling in love with the mini disc format. I wonder if there is any way guitar FX pedals could be used in conjunction with a minidisc player for some cool results?
You have opened up a whole new world of music for me in this last week, I can’t thank you enough for the inspiration. I have just bought my first 4 track and can’t wait to start exploring the possibilities. Could you please advise me on the headphones you are using here/ they look unbelievably comfortable- thank you! 🙏
A contact mic would be perfect on a minidisc player/recorder with how loud it is, something about mechanical disc sounds just fascinates me... It's a shame minidisc players go for crazy prices on eBay tho
Hi, How do you fix a "NO DISC" error ? I have a Sharp MiniDisc MD-MT20 unit which gives me a "NO DISC" error everytime I put in a MiniDisc. 😞😭 I was able to fix the TOC ERRORa fairly easily but now this is happening. 😕 I cleaned the focusing lens with a cue tip. I also tried adjusting the potenciometer on the reading head either. Thanks ! 🙄🖒 Best Regards,
I was able to fix the issue about an hour later from posting this post by just turning the trimmer potenciometer on the Read Head a bit Clockwise. 😉😆 However... now I'm facing another issue. When I try to record music onto a recordable MiniDisc I get errors like "Can't REC" & "DEFECT!". This happens after about 10s of recording. It says then "Writing!" followed by a "READ ERROR". During this I can hear the Read Head going up & down. 😕 Is the Write Head dead perhaps ? I had a look at the MiniDisc & the surface looks fine. Maybe I need to just again turn the trimmer potenciometer some more... 🙄😕

Lovely origin story! Knowing the headphone trick at age 15 is crafty.
You make a great case for never ever selling gear.

wow, so glad to see you here AMULETS!
I miss #spacetoilet, too.
“That sounds like some sort of space toilet” - that quote wins the internet today! Lol thanks for your posts.

Wow... I found myself absolutely lost during your performance in this video - when you began speaking again I realised I'd been entranced!

Oh yes, CD skip is cool, too! Especially if you carefully damage the discs.
Carefully damaging CDs...
You’re a meme poet, Sir!
My college was throwing a bunch of these out, thank you for the inspiration and blurring the lines between bizarre and imaginative!

I think the click idea would absolutely work! That way you can get quasi-modular random bursts. Very interesting!
Maybe it requires something like the Bastl Klik?
If you want to trigger a modular, maybe. But these things have proper hot levels usually.
Best comment “sounds like a space toilet” 😂😂😂 great video as always
One of your best so far. I really liked the end result, it took me places unexpectedly!
Love the track, impressed by what you get out of such a short piano loop
Always a pleasure and made me think how to apply some the ideas to what I have to use. As always thank you Herr Hainbach

Lovely exploration of the equipment and a great musical touch from you as always.

the old classic "space toilet" sound. Great work Hainbach.

'space toilet' oh man Hainbach I think you came up with the title for some of the things I've recorded lately :)

KOMA ELEKTRONIK Field Kit FX.
HAINBACH Thank you. Also, you have inspired me greatly. Thanks for that.
Pretty cool, really reminds me of the ending of a scifi horror flick.
Also, how are your arms so hairless?
Is that a spring reverb tank upside down, if so are you plugged directly into it without any pre or post amp?

Love this Glitch technique.
You are also the first to ever write "first" on my channel! I will always remember this moment. :-)

really creative
great sounds! what are you using the op1 for?
Additional string-like harmonies.
you should also try CD damaging
Have done so and have something planned :-)
