Bloody hell Matt, thank you for being so open and honest. your struggles really resonated with me, thank you Pete for the EMC podcast, the world needs this, it needs openness and vulnerability, WE NEED TO TALK FELLA'S. We're not fucking machines, we feel things, we struggle with shit and IT'S OK

@@WACampingAdventures It's true though dude. I work in a Alpha male world where being tough is just expected but so many people see vulnerabilities and talking about our feelings as being weak. Let me tell you, if I need to step up and protect someone or defend my family, you better bring a fucking army because I'm going to fight until my last breath, but that doesn't mean I don't struggle, that doesn't mean that I'm not fighting my own demons EVERY SINGLE DAY, do not confuse vulnerability with weakness because you will lose every single time. The issue is we hide our vulnerability's, we hide our struggles for fear of being labelled weak and the result is far too many good many dying by their own hand and it needs to stop.

Having watched Matt's channel for quite a while I think he seems to have an old soul. I don't mean that in any bad way but he seems very introspective and centred when he is in the bush. He has a maturity beyond his physical years. The appreciation of the natural world is something many people have completely lost. I generally don't like solo videos with no commentary at all but Matt's vids are the exception to that. Somehow he manages to capture the experience of the bush in a way nobody else I have seen can.

It's interesting how many people who make YT videos hate to see themselves on film. It was the hardest thing I had to deal with and since I hate my own appearance and my voice it was very difficult to start doing it. Eventually I just got immune to it so no matter how much we dislike doing something, it taught me that it is possible to find a way past it. I live to make videos even though I know I am never going to be up there with those who really make great content. I have a few people who watch regularly and seem to enjoy it and that never ceases to surprise me.

(Commenting as I am watching here) There is a funny relationship we have with people we like online. We may never meet them in person and never really know them but we relate to them as if they are friends in some ways. When people like Alex and Michael (Seek Adventure) walk away from the platform there is a real sense of loss. It shows you how much the videos you guys make really do touch people in different ways.

Matt and I go way back, burning rubber and overheating on those coastal cruises, chasing thrills in beat-up cars with the metal blaring. The boys where pretty wild. But even then, I sensed something hidden beneath his easygoing charm.
He'd light up talking about cars, his passion shining through. Yet, seeing this podcas, when it came to sharing his own story, his heart seemed guarded. I admit, I've judged him for it. But who am I to question his path?
Now, seeing his connection with Roothy, a kindred spirit so genuine and true, it hits me. Maybe Matt's just protecting that vulnerable part of himself, the part that yearns for real connection. Maybe we all are.
In the end, it's not about who's right or wrong. It's about honoring those fleeting moments of joy, those shared experiences that bind us together. It's about cherishing the memories of a friendship that, despite its complexities, holds a special place in my heart.

I don't even know where to begin after watching this.... 2 blokes that firstly, got me into watching solo camping vlogs. Giving so much, not just to me but many others. I used to own and drive a 76 just like Pete's while I was living remote NT, he was my first introduction to the passion/frustration of solo camping. Then I stumbled across Matty G, he brought to me an immense love of the simple pleasures of the bush, he always has a most interesting story to tell about the place/people he chose to pitch his swan/tent, (I swear this bloke has lived a life before as a swaggy). Thank you both, through you I have learnt so much.

  • @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen
    @WesternAustraliaNowAndThen 3 месяца назад

I love the fact that men's mental health is something that CAN be talked about more these days. I come from a genration where you just shut up and put up with whatever was going on in your life and you weren't considered a 'proper' man if you started talking about it. That is the absolute worst thing anyone can do. It is so good to see that starting to change now. I have suffered severe depression all my life (it doesn't help when you basically hate your body) but I have found that as I get older, it doesn't get to me the way it used to. I guess getting old means there are so many more things going wrong to worry about that eventually you just turn around and say, bugger it, I'm not going to give a stuff about it any more. The trouble with depression is that you spiral down and down until you can't see any way out. I did eventually discover that when it got really bad, doing something physical but mundane actually helped to break the downward spiral. Just mopping the floor was enough to snap me out of it. I have read since that physical activity like that helps release the right kind of chemicals into our system that are able to change how we feel. (Maybe that might help someone who is really struggling one day to break out of the immediate downward trajectory - I hope so anyway.)

Great comments about styles of camping and 4wd'ing as so much these days seems to be almost an arms race about who can spend the most, break the most or jam the most crap into their vehicle.
The idea of getting away from it all seems to have been lost for so many imo.

Sorry about all the comments today but this was so interesting I can't help myself LOL. Pete's comment about enjoying the simple things in life brought to mind something I wrote back in 2004 after watching an interview with Mel Brooks by Andrew Denton. Hope you get something out of this:
    LITTLE JOYS
It’s the little joys of life
That make it all worth while
    The funny quirky silly things
That bring to light a smile
    It’s not about the money
Or the fame good fortune brings
It’s all about how good it feels
    When fantasies have wings
It’s not the shiny motor car
    Or fancy racing yacht
It’s not the stocks and bonds and shares
Or how much gold you’ve got
It’s special times on certain days
    That make you feel alive
When nothing can account for it
But joy just seems to thrive
When all you have is nothing
    But each other’s warm embrace
That’s all you need to always bring
A smile to light your face
It’s the little joys of life
That will last from year to year
And the little joys of life
That are always held most dear.
