  • 1978 Box Chevy Impala Junkyard Find. Been a minute since I've ran across a 4 door Impala from the late '70s. This one, although funky from sitting for so long, was actually not in that bad of shape. It was mostly all there minus the front end. Looks like someone beat me to the car and got those parts. I don't believe it came into the yard like that. I have a 1989 4 door Caprice Brougham so not there that I could use but I did take the radio bezel as it was in great shape. But anyone local looking for parts could have a little field day if they had one of these.

    Gotta love the box Chevy’s! Still see some box Caprices running around, but not many box Impalas. I would love to find a 77-85 box Impala 9C1, yeah those are tough man!

    Yes 305 VIN code U two barrel. First timing chain I did circa 1991 was on my grandparent's 305 1979 Caprice. Same engine setup but in '79 it was called a VIN G two barrel.

    Bill Kates Motors was located at 4605 E Belknap St, Fort Worth, TX 76117 and appeared to be around at least through 2011 from what I can see. Looks like "RC Motor Sales" is there now as of Feb. 2019.

    probably bought with the value apperance package, with body side mouldings, wheel opening moldings and wheel covers, if i had ordered a full size chevy in 1978, i would have gone for bumper strips and bumper guards, (std. on pontiac catalina).

  • @paulsheehan789
    @paulsheehan789 3 года назад +1

    in canada, the bel air, impala and caprice classics had pontiac clones, the laurentian, (bel air in canada, impala in u.s), parisienne, (impala) and parisienne brougham, (caprice classic), all were built in oshawa ont. and weren't sold in u.s, parisienne was sold in u.s in 1983 to 1989, after 1986, dropping the parisienne name plate, and was named safari, (sold only as a wagon).

  • @paulsheehan789
    @paulsheehan789 3 года назад +1

    the impala was a base model and fleet car, (bel air was still sold in canada). most 1978 full size chevys had the 5.0 litre, (std. on wagons), 4.1 litre was standard on coupe and sedan, the 5.7 litre, was optional.

    They put junk transmissions behind those 305s. THM 200s from Chevettes. True
    story, New Years Eve '78, friend had one with about 15,000 miles on it. Got stuck in snow,
    gentle rocking blew it up. Lucky he had extended warranty, even the output shaft was broken.
    And no, it was early and we weren't hammered yet.

      And only 145 HP due to the EPA restrictions that the auto-makers were slow in overcoming. For a 3,600 pound car, that's pretty bad.

    • @roger628
      @roger628 4 года назад

      I dont recall the car being underpowered. Granted, it was no funny car, but got down the road just fine. Acceleration and merging was no problem.

    Probably at the peak of the most uninteresting, boring cars that GM put out, the horrible box design along with auto-makers having to heavily restrict horsepower due to the EPA and not having the technology to overcome it. Even the clock back then was an option. The X-car release even made things worse for GM. Still, if one has one of those cars today, it's interesting and unique.

    Nice score on the radio bezel, you forgot the radio itself lol
    Looks similar to the Ford LTD sedans of the 80s, love the boxier cars from the 70s.
    Looks like it was taken care of until the owners passed away, probably could've gotten the car to run without too much effort.
    But the interior looks to be too moldy and unhealthy to use, sad it had to be that way

    I worked w a guy at GoodYear that had a 78 in triple green with the 305 deuce. This was in the mid 90s. Being a Chicago car, it was a total rust bucket with many patch panels on it and sheet metal pop riveted in for frt floors. He put in a timing chain and new valve seals and drove the devil out of it. IMO, this was 1 of GM's best chassis designs. So simple to work on and maintain! His car had over 300k on it when he sold it.

    Just a friendly suggestion-You seem to often struggle with frozen hood hinges. As a goodwill gesture to the yard owners, why not carry a can of PB Blaster and/or WD/and/or white grease and treat them to avoid damaging them when close them again?

I learned a lot on that car. They paid $1000 for it in 1983, because it had 78,000 miles on it when they got it (It was my father's company's car).
