I almost forget that the phantoms don't record sound and Gav puts it all in by hand. This one is especially impressive.
The editing when they showed the sparks, then removed gaps, then did all the sparks at once felt like a visualization of radio lab. So beyond awesome.
Gav mentioned in a video that they have a sound guy making all the sounds. But ya, it might still be him doing all the video editing.
@Nikkeftw I believe that was for The Super Slow Show series when they had a full crew. Videos like this in the studio or Gavin's back garden I THINK are edited by him personally. I could be wrong
He could 100% make some weird electronic music if he wanted to
@@KeManYT I woulda thrown a Daft Punk song over the footage and called it a day. thank goodness Gav is a harder worker than I am lmao
Those super close shots of the arcs destroying the disc were incredible
its funny toward the end they jokingly said "our channel is devolving" on arguably their coolest video to date haha, those disc shots were amazing
The 90 degree corners are surreal x

You lost mate?
"I think our channel's devolving" - certainly not - this is peak RUclips right here :D
RUclips is devolving. This is the lucky bulwark.
I love when Gav's like "are you going to draw a funny face on it?" And you can just see Dan thinking about it, realizing it hadn't occurred to him, being a bit embarrassed it hadn't, even though you knew from the moment Gav said it that we'd be cutting to "Dan draws a silly face" as soon as he was done thinking.
“Is it a good idea to microwave this” was my original Slow Mo Guys, very greatful for this nostalgic throwback
Same here! I love the vibe of “blokes doing some science on the weekend.” Glad there’s still a market for it
Man that's a throwback. I remember binging that series when I was younger lol
I’m surprised that I found a comment mentioning that. It’s somewhat obscure lmao
And nobody likes roasted nuts!
I'll never forget the first time they microwaved the airbag, and they barely made it.
It will never stop being hilarious to me with how much your channel has grown, with all the specialized, expensive equipment and your own warehouse to film in, that it's still just some boys messing around like teenagers. Blowing up eggs, jumping on trampolines and putting Mentos in Coke. You're one of the few channels that's still retained its original feeling since day 1. The scope doesn't need to unreasonably expand forever for you two to still be endlessly entertaining. Please never change.
and the quintessential destroyed, slowly disintegrating lab coat.
Agreed. If anyone deserves 15 million viewers, it's them. Just two friends sharing what they enjoy doing on the weekends. None of the typical phony, pseudointellectual youtube garbage.
very well said, having watched them since 2012 they're one of the only channels that i've never moved on from because of exactly what you said. genuinely one of the best youtube channels of all time.
@@linebrunelle1004What's going to happen when it's unwearable?
@@devynnagy2707I’d expect they’ve got an answer for that. It’ll be patched up in some typically unique way, eg stapled together or something befitting their vibe

Maybe Gav and Dan can try some of your experiments and put them into Slo-Mo! That’d be super cool.

I think I watched every video you guys put out, the show was amazing
@The SLow Mo Guys
I would love to see the CD done again in slow motion with 2 CDs in the Microwave staked on top of each other like pancakes. About 20 years ago I had a job where no one at the company liked the microwave and we had an abundant of old and or dead CD-r disks around. I found that stacking 1 on top of another one that the little arcs and plasma things would actually levitate the CD that was on top... This would be so cool to see again, especially done by you guys. Really love your channel and have been fan since almost the beginning...
+1 to this because I really want to see that!
bruh, this is such an obscure and niche thing. You were probably like 1 out of 3 people in the world that knew about this. Thanks for sharing with us!!
@@STS232323im curious who the other 2 are 🤔 I bet they have some crazy back story with ups and downs where you laugh and cry along the way when listening to their story.
Additional question if they return to microwaved CDs : does it make a difference if it's a blank disc or if it has something on it?
@@danghostman2814 that's an interesting question, and in theory it might; writing to a CD changes the surface of it, so you might get arcs a bit faster due to the rougher surface... but to know for sure we need to try it.
FOR SCIENCE!
4:00 and on, I got goosebumps. The visuals, the music. Well done guys! It looks impressive!
I got some real blade runner vibes
I started to tear up
Felt it too, brought a tear to my eye
I usually love how they don’t change the slow mo music but I LOVE the 80s future synth music they picked for that middle section.. it’s sooo fitting with the “Tron” looking footage!!
I thought it was some Blade Runner (1982) music
On the other hand, "Burning CDs" is kinda '90s vibe.
Shoutout to the sound design for your slow mo shots. You really make it feel like we're seeing something magical.

This was one if the most immersive minutes of video i’ve watched in ages. Well done gents
Top tier quality!
I never thought one of my favorite visuals ever would be a CD in a microwave filmed in slow motion.
Gav's sound design has always been awesome, but this video just takes it to a completely new level. It was absolutely amazing.
He doesnt do it himself
Okaaay.... Alright. Starting at 4:21 has got to be some of THE coolest, most beautiful slow mo I've ever seen in my life! Seeing the sparks and plasma zip along the cd in a circular pattern creating the bubbling in its wake is so incredible to me! This is absolutely one of my fave slo mo vids you guys have ever done! 👏👏

In every video, the quality of the sound design never ceases to amaze me, but this one is REALLY impressive! It's so amazing how much effort is put into making the sound effects, it gives another depth to the footage.
I was just about to comment how much I liked the sound tracks. Music with the CD sparking was caotivating.
I think this is the best video you have ever made. Making a CD in a microwave feel ethereal and cosmic is next level.
These videos are not only informative, beautiful and fun. They’re also super calming and positive all the way. Always cheers me up. You guys are amazing!
The CD slowmos are a literal siren for me. I just can't look away: mesmerizing is an understatement.
Lmao go outside
@@majesticeagle5461 you first
Why cant you look away from sirens ??
@@thing4826 >:(
Siren as in mythogy. Not police siren.
Sirens from mythology essentially trapped people, traditionally sailors, by singing (it's where "sirens song" comes from). So a person or sailor would get trapped by this siren.
Fun fact: That 12cm wavelength is what causes your food to heat up unevenly. Microwaves transfer more energy at the peak of their wavelength (every 12cm). This is why microwaves have a rotating table. Though there always seem to be parts that get less heat energy
This is why I always try to put the food at the edge of the tray instead of the middle, so none of it gets stuck in a cold spot 😄
It's also why they direct the magnetron at a metal fan. The fan reflects microwaves into the cooking chamber but because it is rotating the waves are scattered helping to prevent hot spots. The fan also doubles as an actual fan cooling the magnetron and rest of the electronics.
@@Whatsinanameanyway13Modern microwaves don't have the metal fan anymore, at least here in Europe.
The only one that I had come across so far that had one was a quite bulky brown unit likely from the early 80s.
I know from having disassembled so many of them...
Yet there are still schematics on the internet that show the waveguide and metal fan even though it's no longer part of new designs as far as real life microwaves go.
I always place the butter in the center for 15 seconds for better spreadability when it comes out of the refrigerator. It works best in the middle.
and that's why the MIDDLE is always not heated. all around is the end of the wave length. So you better put your food at the edge of the plate.
Man you guys are absolute legends, it’s inspiring to still see you making awesome content 13yrs down the line. I’ve been watching you guys since I was a senior in hs, I’m 32 now.
The sequence starting at 4:21 put me into an absolutely blissful trance. One could say a dazzling deep dream. It *sparked* thoughts I haven't had in awhile. Thanks for that. 🤌
So many of these shots look like they could be used in a sci-fi movie or something- 4:22 especially needs to be in the opening scene for a tv show.
i was thinking the same, its sooooo goooood.
4:18 - That is truly art.
I know you put a lot of work into the foley, but that work was compounded with that melancholy blade-runner-esque synth and those incredible close-up shots. Not to mention the colours, lighting, pacing... I was truly captivated; it felt otherworldly.
The music gave me Stranger Things vibe. That entire sequence felt like something straight out of a movie.
The title doesn't do it justice. This is amazing.
3:28 This is how I imagined Naruto vs Sasuke when I read the manga. Such a cool pattern

*8:14** try a regular ("old"-school) incandescent light-bulb in the microwave,* they can look amazing, lots of purple sparks, but watch out, they shatter because of the heat difference & can fling molten glass around.
When you ran it at 80k you can see as the metallic material tears in one direction, the electric spark appears to be perpendicular to the direction of the tear, a spark across the gap. Almost like a Jacob's ladder. This is seriously one of the coolest looking things you've ever filmed. That first set of shots would make such an awesome looping desktop background video.
The fricking disk, burning, and glowing. That's the kind of visual effect you see on sci-fy vilain armor to show how powerful they are.
