"One of the most enigmatic (and beautiful!) songs in the Grateful Dead's repertoire, the song debuted in 1970, a year during which it was played a dozen and a half times, as well as being a big part of American Beauty's beauty. Returning for two versions in 1972, it was then shelved until 1989, when it made its triumphant return at the monumental 10/9/89 show in Hampton, VA. It would, thankfully, stick around until the final week of Grateful Dead shows in July 1995." - David Lemieux
The GD only played my birthday, August 25th 3 times. This Shoreline show holds a special place in my heart. Please, please, PLEASE release the whole video!! Thanks!! ✌️
We are all twins so to speak!!! So many stories!! 🎉❤⚡️💀☮️💨💨💨💨🍄🍄🍄 keep sharing w all ur crazy heads. Keep shining so the other freaks can find you 😊🎉🎸🥁🎹🎻🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🤩✨⭐️🌟☄️
I was fortunate to catch about 4 Attics from 92-94. Vegas 1992 was my first. Every one was so momentous & the highlight of the show for me. I saw the Expo run in 93 instead of Shoreline & missed this one. Caught one in Eugene, Shoreline 94 & I think my last show with my only Unbroken Chain at Vegas 95, day three. Or was. that a Days Between? I knew that would be my last show. I knew it. They should have gone on an extended hiatus in 1992 when they cancelled The Field Trip anniversary. Jer deserved a 3-5 year vacation to heal and pursue other projects. Pizza Tapes with Tony Rice, Grisman material. I would have loved him to form an instrumental free jazz group. He wasn't given the time to express other musical pursuits like "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" for Jim Jarmusch. The $ machine was in control. Too many dependents and he had empathy for the bus of youngins
Actually in attendance for this night and the entire run. Strange audio issues with this song was heard in the venue and here on the video. Alas, N1 was a barn burner, hot of the 2 excellent Eugene shows.
I've always liked the American Beauty through Workingman's/Flood era/idiom... Maybe my favorite (as far as one can have one!). Maybe b/c the 'Best Of...' comp was the first album that really grabbed me when I was 14-ish. This is a good live version of a (yet another) underrated Dead tune, imo (along the lines of 'Black Muddy River' and 'Brokedown Palace')... Great post Thanks!
My first was Vegas 1992, day 3. My only "Must Have Been the Roses". Epic setlist. Help>Slipknot>Franklin's opener. Scarlet>Fire set 2. Other 1>Dew with Steve Miller. Day two & 3 were something else. Saw an Attics at Shoreline, Eugene and Oakland. I believe an acoustic one at Phil & Friends, 1994 at B.C.T. as well. Everyone was a blessing. The harmonies with Vince were amazing for tunes like this. "Rain" w/Vince was amazing as well. "Days Between"!!!!
A pristine version of a hauntingly beautiful song, no question, but sadly, all 3 of these (overall lackluster, yet with the odd, occasional and all-too-fleeting flash of musical brilliance interspersed throughout, just enough to keep me hooked) late August 1993 Shoreline shows were a dark yet unmistakeable foreshadowing of what was to ultimately come just less than 2 short years later. Jerry was openly struggling to remember lyrics to songs and even basic guitar chords that he himself had written, some just months earlier, and was often looking lost, dazed, clearly confused, disinterested and disengaged with the rest of the band on while on stage, it was so incredibly sad to see, up close and in person, a once passionate, vibrant, artistic giant who now prematurely found himself befuddled and mentally enfeebled well before his actual years, largely due to an agonizing yet utterly self-imposed lifetime of self-indulgence, addiction and excess. ============================= I flew from my home in Salt Lake to Portland for the Eugene Grateful Dead 1993 shows the weekend before, (timing it to be able to catch an exceptional Bob Dylan/Santana show in the Portland Rose Garden the night prior) and then drove down the Pacific Coast for these 3 Shoreline shows, and while overall it was an awesome, amazing, outrageously fine and wilde time for a previously sheltered young adult from conservative, straight-laced Utah out to explore the wider world, it was heartbreakingly clear even to this then 22 year-old Deadhead and overall Music Lover that my musical idol Jerry Garcia was sadly, tragically on a short path to self destruction... Still, being blessed with the opportunity to have heard Jerry Garcia perform his timeless, inspired and ultimately triumphant music live well over 150 different times from 1987 until 1995 remains some of the fondest, most sacred memories of my lifetime, and I cherish each and every one of them, even the ones like this show, that were, in retrospect, Perfectly Imperfect. Cheers from here in Krakow, Poland, Matthew

This song truly changed my whole perspective on reality....
That song made the cut today because that is arguably the best Vince ever gave harmony vocal in his time in the group.
Vince sounds sounds wonderful here as well. This tune rearranges my soul, takes it on a trip and returns it safely home. Cheers all
" when I had no wings to fly ...you flew to me"_
that truely sums up my lifelong relationship w this band god bless
RIP Robert Hunter and thank you for such beautiful words to such beautiful music. Was there and is just as moving to hear it now as then.

Sweet❤
Another Robert Hunter masterpiece..❤
I was at this show.... 💙⚡❤⚡💙
One of my favourite groups of all time. This song is beautiful!😢
Such an amazing show that day! Last one I attended when Jerry was still alive 😢
Attics of My Life!!!!! Awesome! One of their signature tunes!!!!
Exceptional. Vince did wonders with this tune.

I considered this my birthday show too even though I was born earlier in the month. My gift in 93’ was going to this show. ❤️
Me 2!! So many shoreline shows. I saved all my tickets stubs. I have them to this day 🤩when I look at the price, my head spins. 🎉❤⚡️💀
Love that Rosebud guitar. Sweet twang. He has just received the Cripe which he played in Eugene. Probably still getting used to the new one.
In the attics of my life
Full of cloudy dreams; unreal
Full of tastes no tongue can know
And lights no eye can see
When there was no ear to hear
You sang to me
I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me
In the book of love's own dreams
Where all the print is blood
Where all the pages are my days
And all my lights grow old
When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me
You flew to me
In the secret space of dreams
Where I dreaming lay amazed
When the secrets all are told
And the petals all unfold
When there was no dream of mine
You dreamed of me

Ironically, this was the song playing when I got up this morning (I have to sleep with music playing [tinnitus])!
This was a great show start to finish.
This was my first show!!! I can't believe I'm finding this right now.
I'm 67 and the dead have been a part of my long strange trip my whole life 😂

This is a 💎😊😢❤
Technical note - surprised to see Rosebud. And something going on with the pick-ups? I thought it was all Bolt guitar from Eugene through end of year.
Not the best version but always a joy to listen to
Shoreline ⚡️ Greek … homecookin’ always looked good on Garcia
😊😊😊#loveoverallwisdom = יֵשׁוּעַ =ruach ha-kodesh = Yaweh
Very sad song. I never liked it as encore. I wanted something more upbeat
I might have been at that concert--the only time I ever saw them. I think I had already fallen asleep by this time. Was not impressed.
Jerry not happy with his in ear vocal mix.
I will only give Vince credit for finding his backing vocal game.
Since the passing of Jerry this band is "Dead".
1993 was a pretty lackluster year for the dead sorry to say.
I don't get the hype. They all sound like they're on fentanyl.
