Normally I wait for someone else to post this, but I was early and I thought "why not do it myself for once". Feel free to use it to make the chapters :) Super cool soundtrack, and fun to hear you talk about it.
Coming back to this after the OFF remake announcement, I'm totally back into the OFF hype !! Happens every few years but I'm excited to see a new version of a game I played when I was 11 years old getting more attention
Yeah, just disappointing how the OST isn't coming back due to complications with ACC. For me, it's mostly with Avatar Beat. Love that song so much, it screams OFF to me.
I like how the industrial beat comes so out of nowhere in Pepper Steak. It sounds like electro swing so you expect the usual edm beat, but instead you get this gritty industrial percussion that subverts the expectation and now contrasts the lighter mood of the sampled swing song. A song that perfectly captures the game's overall nature.
I remember playing this back in high school and patiently awaiting the full English translation. Then like a year later it exploded all over tumblr and I felt super cool for being an "old" fan
No joke this game is what made me interested in game OSTs as a whole - I know you haven't played this game so you aren't familiar with the context but never in my life have I felt so enthused but also uneasy as I was when Pepper Steak started playing the first time. That's a feeling I don't think I'll ever feel again, and I love this game because of it.
Another game that does the whole "Wait.. whats going on?" thing quite well is the Never Hood game and soundtrack. Sure, its never really unnerving but it sure has vibes for days and strangeness.
One thing that sticks with me from Pepper Steak is the singular toll of a heavy bell now and then. To me it adds a note of the ominous, some crushed despair, and an idea of already determined finality.
The Meaning of His Tears and Avatar Beat always makes me feel so much chills going down my spine, from sadness of the first and fear from the second. They convey those feelings so well, "the world is over", but "not everything is over" feeling
What a pity that Alias Conrad Coldwood, the creator of the music of OFF and so many more amazing musics, decided to hide all his RUclips videos with his music, I used to listen to all his works daily but now some of them are lost and I had almost all of them in a phone that exploded so I also lost the music that way, but welp, at least his OFF work will never be forgotten and will trascend us all for thousands if not millions of years, because that's what art does, and OFF is Arte
It's all just unlisted, also there's a channel that's archived all of the videos that is still public Plus most of his music is still on the unproductive funtime website (gaarabis) So worry not, it is not all lost to time!!
Alas, I was busy getting a new car today so I completely missed the stream. OFF is a SUPER strange game, definitely worth checking out sometime. As for this Super Thanks, please put it towards Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.
Gosh Dan, ever since I found out about this channel when you released your first deltarune reaction would I expect you to react to one of my favorite games. Absolutely loved getting to experience this wonky soundtrack again with you!!
53:51 bro probably someone already came in clutch on this but I gotchu fam Soft Breeze is the soundtrack played in the smoke mines, when you enter the first area of the first zone, Zone 1. Rainy Day + Meat is the song that is played right before entering the maze that leads to the Zone 1 boss. The squelching meat sound at the end of RD+M is the sound that plays when you ride a pedalo through the meat fountains. They fill the moat-like structure surrounding the first boss' quarters, before you enter the maze. OFF is known for two things: its music and its puzzles. And boy-howdy, both are unforgettable
I know there’s already at least 3 comments suggesting this, but I’m genuinely surprised undertake yellow has not come up yet. And I’d absolutely watch it. (It would also do CRAZY views on the channel I can guarantee)
Oh yes OFF! I've been waiting for this video for a while now! And I'm happy to finally see it! It's a little sad that the game isn't as popular as it once used to be. For one almost no one talks about it anymore and no one new tries to get into the franchise or the bizarre world of OFF. On the other hand it's also a good thing the game isn't as big as it once was. It makes it feel right at home with all the other RPG maker games like Yume Nikki, Lisa, Ib and the list goes on and on. I guess you could call these games cult classics. And speaking of RPG maker games. I know Hylics is already on the list for OST videos but I can't wait to get to both Hylics games and their OST. I especially hope we will get the bonus albums too which aren't part of the games itself but are still important in my opinion. As for another game franchise I would love to see (not sure if it is in the list already, someone correct me if it is) would be the Little Nightmares games. There's a third instalment coming out this year and the soundtrack for both games is phenomenal!
If you told someone who listened to this out of context that this is the game that will honest to God change your life, make you question your own sense of self, and experience ego death, they'd call ya crazy
Off's songs are very weird, but what's even weirder is how the first couple songs on the OST are placed! For some context: 01 - Global is the sound that most of the NPC's in the game make when speaking to them. Pretty much all of them except for the bosses, shopkeeper, and the mentor character in this game all use it, and its supposed to imply that the air is painful for them to breathe. 02- Silencio is the song that plays on the "world map" (its sorta like a chapter select) and the purpose is that its supposed to scare you into hurrying along to the next part of the story, instead of lingering because one of this game's biggest secrets is *what happens when you return to a place you've defeated the boss of.* 03 - 14 residents is just the normal theme of Zone 0, which sort of acts like the tutorial chapter. This area doesn't really have a boss on your first visit... 05 - not safe is what plays in every area after you return. These "zones" have been "purified" by your character's actions, but all you can here is the sounds of emptiness. Often times the enemies here are MUCH harder then your first visit, and really most of them shouldn't be re-entered unless you are prepared, as each place has a secret item that you can bring to zone 0 later in the game... Because if you do, 08 - Tender sugar is the secret boss of Zone 0. By the point in the game you can fight her (Sugar), you both deal tons of damage to each other, but it allows you to finally purify zone 0, and get some really good items. The thing thats incredibly bizarre about that though is you are *not* supposed to be able to return to those areas until much later into the game, usually after you beat zone 2. It seems weird that all of them even comebefore the zone 1 main area themes.
I love how he assumes from the soundtrack itself what's going on. O Rosto De Um Assassino stands for "The Face of an Assassin" in Portugese, but this is after a very huge revelation to the player in the game that the one you control, The Batter, is the assassin himself. Withering away at the world, by wounding the blood of the one who took the role as Guardian of the zone. Title works very well given the circumstances. As for why it's Portugese, I'm not sure. Probably some deep meaning, or it's just for some extra fancy flair.
Ohhhh I haven't watched through yet but I just wanted to say I'm so happy you got to Off!!! It makes me happy this game is still remembered, it left such an impact on me. Its style in visuals and music is fantastic

It's the song that started it all I'd say ha ha. Unexpectancy P2 from Pizza Tower and Ghost Fight from Undertale took influence from it.
@@TheNexDude I'd say they took influence from Electroswing in general. The genre itself is older than this song.
Pepper Steak pioneered Industrial Swing, maybe, probably not
The difference being is that Pepper Steak actually sounds good
I remember playing this back in high school and patiently awaiting the full English translation. Then like a year later it exploded all over tumblr and I felt super cool for being an "old" fan
Picking up on that shared motif between Rainy Day and Soft Breeze was crazy, i never noticed that. Got a whole lot of use out of that red marker, eh?
God, I remember listening to the OFF OST back in middle school. I'm graduating from college in a few months! Huge nostalgia for me.
same thing for me, except I'm graduating high school soon. I would bring my laptop with me to school and play it in class, those were simpler times..
