Thanks a lot for making these lessons! There is not much information to be found about playing the duduk in english. Although it seemed a very difficult instrument, I was able to play almost all the notes in tune on the first day and I'm noticing a lot of progression every day. Still struggling a bit with the notes E and higher. Learning without a teacher is difficult, but these videos are helping me a lot to get me started and keep me interested. Without them, I think it would be impossible to learn, especially with all the many subtle techniques involved to get a rich tone which are not obvious when watching other musicians play.
Benoit, you are absolutely right. Duduk is not the easiest instrument to play and it takes time to master it. Keep going though. If you need help or have any questions, you can always reach out.
Please continue with him speaking Armenian 😍 loved the language. Thank you so much for the lessons! I just became interested in the instrument and looked for lessons before buying one. With this info I am more confident and hopefully it will prevent me from developing bad habits. Thank you so much! Love from the North of Mexico 🌵

Thanks a lot for this ! I will begin Duduk soon, and I'm glad that there is great lessons like this to let us learn how to play this beautiful instrument. Thanks again !!
Thank you so much for your generous lessons. I just received a duduk as a gift. I play many instruments. With your instruction, I was able to immediately begin making beautiful music with my duduk. Looking forward to learning more. :)
Thank you so much for this Master Class. I received a duduk as a Christmas present after telling my husband I longed to play it. I have never played an instrument in my life (and have never really wanted to), but the duduk speaks to my soul. I watch this class every night to give me inspiration as I practice. My motto this year is to be brave enough to suck at something new! I certainly am not any good at even making sound yet, but I'm getting better bit by bit, with this video reminding me of all the details. I will contact you for lessons when I can reliably produce notes!
Thank you so much for writing to us. It's inspiring to hear someone is finding these lessons useful. Duduk is not the easiest instrument to play, but keep going and you'll definitely make it!!!
Greetings from Toronto, Canada!. I fell in love with the sound of duduk and purchased one yesterday. I can't wait to learn more about this amazing instrument and so far, this lesson was the best. Thank you!
Good day. May I ask where it is best to buy a beginner's good quality duduk? I'm from the Philippines so I will have to order from abroad. Thanks and great lesson!
Hi Sarkmaler. I'm an Aussie, currently in Armenia for a few months because one of my Armenian friends said I must come over and visit this beautiful country. I'm really enjoying my stay in Yerevan with the occasional visit to Dilijan etc. I was in the Vernissage markets on the weekend and was looking at all the duduks. Most are cheap and for ornamental purposes, but there were some professional ones that caught my eye. I play piano, guitar and the Uke, but have never played a wind instrument. I absolutely love the sound of the duduk as I don't think there is a more soulful sounding instrument out there. I'm seriously contemplating taking up the instrument and perhaps these master classes will be enough - I'm not sure yet. Is there anyone you can recommend that could give me some lessons (in English) whilst I am in Yerevan? There was an elderly gentleman and his grandson (in a separate stall) that were selling the professional ones. They claim to be one of very few manufacturers of Duduks in Armenia. They were very friendly and have offered to let me see them make their duduks. Unfortunately they don't do lessons in English. Thanks in advance.

Hello Sarkamler. I play guitars, drums, and a little piano, and have decided I would like to learn this beautiful instrument. Could you please recommend a place for me to buy one? I'm in Melbourne, Australia. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the lesson . It is a real privilege to learn from you. Thank you . I have just purchased a Duduk with three reeds ,but am having quite some difficulty to get the reeds to vibrate and emit a sound. I have to use a lot of force with my breath with just enough lip pressure to stop the air from escaping around the lips. Is it because they are hard reeds and will be easier to play the more I practice .
Great to hear! It's not only about the reeds, but also your embouchure is not yet strong enough. Keep practicing and the results will come. Good luck on your musical journey!
Good evening. Thanks a lot for the lesson. I noticed that while i play, the parda moves a bit closer to my mouth and loosens. Do you think this is a problem with the instrument? Is there something i should be doing differently?
Good evening! I received my duduk recently, and I have an issue with the highness of the sound. For exemple, when I want to play an A, it is a G# that is coming out naturally, and I have to press a little bit on the reed to reach the A. Is it normal for a beginner and I will figure it out with work? The position of te lips are very difficult, it can come from it. Thank you for your videos, it helps a lot!!
Hi Martin, thank you for your comment - it is quite possible. Many factors can play a role here: a) is the instrument professionally tuned or not, b) reed quality c) opening of the reed, d) lip position, etc. A professional instructor can help you resolve these issues.
Thank you for this series. I am wondering how do you store your duduk? In what kind of case? I'm worried that as the weather is getting hotter and more humid it may make my duduk become out of tune if I don't store it properly.
Hi Haleema, there is no need for special case to store duduk. Exposure to excessive humidity might sometimes develop mold inside of the instrument, so always keep it open air (if you have a case just leave it open) so the instrument breathes and dries as necessary. If your instrument is professionally made you should not have any problems with tuning because of humidity.
Very helpfull lesson thanks! I'm a beginner and when I play I also hear a lot of my breath when I blow in the duduk Is it normal or how can I work on that ? Thanks for your help !
@Bunnymane The most common is duduk in the key of A. Whatever you purchase please buy a professional instrument that is well tuned so you can properly play.
@Bubbymane contact dudukmastergh@gmail.com at GGA Duduks. He will give you an amazing professional instrument shipped to you directly from Armenia at great prices.
Hallo there, i bought two reeds. One of them is right on the tone of A, the other is on G (i took out the threads but nothing change) what else can i do?
Hi there, not sure I understood the question. You have two reeds, one plays A, the second plays G??? Generally, professional reeds don't give that much variation.
@@Sarkamler maybe they aren’t professional reeds, one of them is in the correct pitch on A as my Duduk however the other one is out of pitch on G higher than A, I’m taking out the threads 🧵 in order to get the lower pitch that of A but I can’t.. if you text me your email I can send you in a video my problem
Parev. I've had my duduk for years now, but have not had a lesson and was worried about how to play correctly, so this video is very helpful. I play clarinet and am fighting my embouchure, and also getting a bad headache. Should I assume the headache means I'm blowing incorrectly?
@@Sarkamler 🤔 I think what I'm trying to get at is that I think I might be over-blowing to try and get the correct sound out of the duduk. Or, blowing wrong. Since I don't get a headache playing the clarinet, sax, pennywhistle or recorder, I think I'm just not getting the mouth position on the duduk correctly, but maybe I am wrong. Oh, well.
Absolutely. Vibrato is one of the essentials. Stay tuned, we'll address it in the next lesson along with some important things missed in the first lesson.
I’m still learning Armenian (diasporan) so my ability to play duduk after this series will directly reflect how much I understand haha

Try to wet the reed with your mouth a little bit and then parda should stay where it is. Don't wet it under a running water though...
