Favorite secret for outdoor space? Building separate, but close destinations. You will always have subsets of people in the group you have at your house. Whether it is the guys hanging out at the bar watching sports, the women sitting around or in the pool, kids out in the yard on the playset or teens sitting around the firepit just chilling. Everyone needs a space for their group to hang out together away from everyone else. Watching your videos and participating in your design class has taught me a lot and kept us from making critical mistakes in our build. We don't all have the money to throw into the backyard to complete everything at the same time. Having a design that gives the vision from start to finish ensures the infrastructure gets completed for all phases before starting phase 1.
How to get started? I’ve been looking for a one-stop service, design & construction for an outdoor covered space, pavers and fire pit etc. I’m close to San Jose.
Super Easy - www.backyardlivingguyde.com/3d-design-process I want to help you. I flew down to to San Jose area last year to help multiple clients - I can help you with Design and beyond - Please check out the link - I hope it works out.
San Antonio Tx For sure we need a covered outdoor space in Texas. We are pivoting towards a detached structure. Probably like the video 12x16. Great information. Thank You!
What’s your suggestion for places that get a lot of rain? We are in the PNW and are contemplating an attached structure simply because we don’t want to get wet while getting in and out of the house. Just that thought makes me don’t want to step outside. I have seen several of your videos and get the idea of destinations, splitting up covered structures into separate areas and not having one right by the backdoor but I struggle to imagine enjoying it in the PNW weather.
I love this question because I live in the PNW - Portland Oregon area and as you know it is constantly raining. Keep watching and you will see my backyard with a full Destination setup (although I do have a personal setup right outside my upper deck too). I would love to help you with your Outdoor Space. Please book an appointment and we can go over your Outdoor Living Space.
Mostly with screens. Either fixed screen or automatic screens that come down and completely enclose the outdoor spaces. The last feature in this video shows some possibilities ruclips.net/video/E4FXoVwez0g/видео.htmlsi=1ZQ9agbFmYkbgnfs
Josh, I really struggled with getting a fixed screen or a retractable one. I initially thought that a retractable screen would be nice because I felt I would have a choice of when I could open and close them. My wife wanted a fixed screen because she did not want any possibility of bugs coming in to our outdoor space. She said that whenever we would pull back the retractable screens, it gave opportunity for pests to come in to our space. After a year of having our fixed screen, I have come to realize that she was right. First, it is impossible to keep pests out 100% with fixed or retractable. However, I realize that with the retractable screen, if you have them open at first to get that real outdoorsy feel, you give an opportunity for the pests to come in and if you close them up, the pests are inside with you. I find the fixed screen leaves less opportunity to come in. When we are eating in the outdoor kitchen, there are never and flies or mosquitoes nipping at us. I would recommend the fixed screens when people live in places with lots of pests such as Florida, the Carolinas and where I now live in the Houston area. However, I lived in Southern California for 35 years and never had a problem with pests the way I do here so I think retractable screens would be fine there. Just thought I would share.

I'm curious how you address insects and pest management in your designs.
