Absolutely awesome! Can- Am, the greatest racing series ever. So glad that I still get to see these beasts at the vintage races at Road America every summer.
I'm go to the Hiatorics at Laguna Seca. I first saw saw the Can-Am at Laguna in 70, 71, and 72. Witnessed the dominant Chevy McClarens be defeated by Donohue/Penske Porsche turboPanzer. Most awesome racing I've ever seen.
I agree I went to Ontario 3 times as a kid my first race at Riverside was Jan 1980 after that I was bitten NASCAR twice a year 6 hour endurance race can am super v formula Atlantic Indy cars ....i met Bell..Holbert..Jim Trueman..Mario..R.Petty ...D. Sullivan Bobby Alison ..Mears..Big Al lil Al ..Johncock..Sneva..Waltrip Just to name a few.....plenty of history before I showed up U.S. Grand Prix 1960 Jimmy Clark raced a stock car in 67or 68 also drag racing
After watching this, I have even more respect for David Hobbs. I always hear about his racing history while watching Formula 1 in the US but actually seeing him driving and hearing the hilarious comments he has in this video is just amazing. He raced back when every time you got into the driver's seat could be your last. I'm not saying modern f1 doesn't have the same risks but these guys back in the raw, early, days of racing, had to have the balls to push these cars to the limit. Eventhough overstepping the limit could mean death. These racers that risked the most, will always be my heroes.
They don't think about the risks when they're racing. I grew up with a fellow who wanted to race, and though he never made it to the big leagues, he raced midgets until the day he died, at age 43. He had a heart attack while racing. He went out the way he wanted to; At the wheel. Luckily, no one else was hurt.
Was at this race. Peter Revson became Can-Am champion. Hobbs-Hawkins made a great team for John Wyer's Gulf Fords in the '60s. Always liked David Hobbs. Good man. This race was one week after Jo Siffert died in an accident at Brands Hatch in an non-championship F-1 race, thus ending the Porsche factory Can-Am effort and prompted them to turn it over to Penske
I am a big fan of the 60's- 70's Can Am series, so thank you for posting this fascinating film! Besides the interesting story about David Hobbs, I enjoyed seeing the details of his Ti 22 can am racecar.
Does this bring back memories. Loved Riverside. Was there in 71...one of the first races I attended, I was 14. March AFB used to send a B-52 for a low pass during the pre-start ceremonies. Been a Hobbs fan ever since. In 73 he drove a Carling Black Label sponsored M20...one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen. Sam Winston...he was all over TV in those days and well into the 70s. He was killed in a car accident in 95.
Had to have balls to drive these cars back then. Basically a death trap in a very serious accident. Loved hearing David Hobbs on NASCAR and F1 broadcasts for many years. Sure do miss him and the crew on Speed Channel.
Carroll Smith, one of the lead engineers of Ford's GT40 effort in the 60s, said of Hobbs that he was remarkably careful and sympathetic to the machine in a time when very few drivers were - as well as, a consumate gentleman.
Cool video, thanks for the upload. David has always been my favorite TV guy, he even did some NASCAR races. Ken Squier...great team. Impressive, and also impressive that he drove some serious monster cars.
Tom Jobe at 2:17! Master Fabricator and Machinist Extraordinaire who came from a Top Fuel Racing background. Long live Tom and RIP Bob Skinner and Mike Sorokin
This video shows the 1971 Can-Am season finale, during the last weekend in October. Drivers and fans would be feeling the tragic loss of popular Swiss driver Jo Siffert, who had been contesting the '71 Can-Am series in the #20 STP Porsche 917 spyder. Two weeks before Riverside, Siffert scored a fine 5th place in the day-glo red 917 at Laguna Seca, but he was killed a week later in a burning BRM F-1 car during a non-championship race at Brands Hatch in England.
I know....I was at both the Monterey and Riverside Can-Am that year. Two weeks apart and like you said, Seppi was killed the weekend in between. I saw him finish his last race. It was sad going to the Riverside race after learning what happened. I became a fan of his reading Road&Track articles by Rob Walker in the '60s.
I believe Bob Skinner is shown at 12:05. He and Tom Jobe usually worked on the same projects and teams after their "Surfers" drag days. Those guys made anything fast.
Good piece. Hobbs an ace behind the wheel and and seems to be a good fellow, but the little tantrum after he broke the car shows he was still quite young.

I wish Riverside was still a race track...! Great Video

I sure do miss seeing David Hobbs on the F1 broadcasts.

Great vid! David was one brave dude, can only imagine how challenging and exhausting driving those monsters must have been..
Cool stuff !!!! Really love the cars hanging around the track too !!! David Hobbs is one of my favorite commentators on racing too !!
Love it !!!
I was at that race. I miss both Riverside Raceway and the Can-Am series!!
yeah you're right most interesting and innovative series ever! love it 👍💯🏁
Amazing that two future TV commentators (Hobbs and Sam Posey) were right together for a portion of this race.
So many great names in this video.. David Hobbs, Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Denny Hulme. It's unbelievable!
Love David Hobbs - such a brilliant mind and an incredibly versatile racing driver. And I totally appreciate that English wit...
I’ll never forgive ESPN for ending *Hobbes’* broadcasting career in *F1...* I miss hearing him !!

Wow! That must've been an incredible. This is why I ALWAYS read the comment section. Thanks for sharing!

I saw David Hobbs race the stunning Carling Black Label M20 at Laguna Seca in 1973.
The best racing series of all time.

What a great drive.
Yes, his commentary in NASCAR and F1 when I was a kid in the 80's was always brilliant and memorable.
Guy leapt up 22 places in one race. 22 places! Talk about a bender...
Truly phenomenal driving.
He was buried in traffic and still catching the leaders. And those leaders were no slouches.
Great shot of the smog in SoCal in 1971.
Yes stage 2 alerts were common. Last Stage 2 was 1988.
Hobbs is the best color commentator in the history of racing announcers. His humor and mannerisms absolutely KILL me! XD
Wakey, wakey! Eggs and bakey!
Damn racing was cool back then!

Real cars drivin by real men!
So true, you had to be a man to drive these 1200HP beast back then. Most drivers today are pussy crybabies and the cars are to regulated
Damn right.
And another thing..., real men also know how to combine great finesse with musseling these beasts around. It’s not all strength and guts.
RIP Peter Revson.
What a gem!
Great profile on Hobbsie!

AKA The Surfers.
Glad to hear he lived so many didn't.

Hard to believe David Hobbs is still kicking around. I remember him when I was a kid and now I'm an old man. How did that happen?
Can Am when auto racing was Not boring.
It was boring if you weren't a McLaren fan.
Can Am!
I saw Hobbs race at Riverside.
Turn 6 wall was flexible with many water-bladders inside to absorb a crash. Earliest use of a SAFER barrier.
I believe Bob Skinner is shown at 12:05. He and Tom Jobe usually worked on the same projects and teams after their "Surfers" drag days. Those guys made anything fast.
Tom Jobe was the tall mop haired guy mounting the wing
The heartbreak of defeat.
A clutch, no power steering, and a white line with no silly curbs.
What’s so bad about curbs??
Great video, wish he could have finished. Seems like quite the gentleman.
David Hobbs was a fierce competitor for sure. Can Am was not for drivers with any self doubt.
Hobbs, Matchet, Varsha, the best F1 commentators
5:39 NASCAR cars would keep going straight here , CAN-AM and formula 5000 turn right as he is doing here.
Good piece. Hobbs an ace behind the wheel and and seems to be a good fellow, but the little tantrum after he broke the car shows he was still quite young.
Hobbs had a great drive going on this day, his red mist must've taken a little longer to subside!
Hobbo rules
Is Hobbs' number 49 car Peter Bryant's old Ti22 Can-Am car?
I was 11
14
What happened? What the hell do you think, what happened? Are you blind? lmao
5:37 entering turn 6
Sound is messed up
We all see the fastest of those who can afford. I bet there is faster from the poor!!!
they walk past a 72 chevelle at the end?
Yes this was late '71. '72 model cars just came out when they ran this race.
@@Miatacrosser And a boat of a Buick Electra in the background! Man, I wonder what that would look like as a Low Rider.
I do hate shit that happens vs fast....
