How to draw geometric design - full tutorial

- This is a full-length tutorial showing the stages in creating a continuous interlacing geometry piece. I learnt this from Eric Broug's wonderful book, 'Islamic Geometric Design' - it's a wealth of knowledge and something I refer to very often when working in this form.
A few of my subscribers gave me feedback that my previous vid of this technique was too fast - and they were right! I always appreciate the feedback :)
READING LIST: I can't emphasise enough how rich in information the below resources are - they're all available to buy online from good book sellers:
'Islamic Geometric Design'
Eric Broug
'Islamic Design: A Genius for Geometry'
Daud Sutton
'Arabic Geometrical Pattern & Design'
J. Bourgoin
'Islamic Designs'
Eva Wilson
'Ruler and Compass: Practical Geometric Constructions'
Andrew Sutton
'Drawing Geometry: A Primer of Basic Forms for Artists, Designers and Architects'

Thank You so much for the tutorial and the Reading list, it will be undeniably valuable. I am translating these patterns into embroidery and have been trying to find a tutorial to learn to draw them instead of tracing - which feels like cheating to me! Your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow.
It's Moroccan rosette!!! Used in zellej and carved everywhere!!! So Pleasing to the eyes
He is Andalusian, I don't know how to attribute anything to you
@@oussamalarbi4412 hhhh this is moroccan babe stop and all the people know that
This is a great tutorial/ design. Thankyou! However, I found it so difficult! I'm surprised to see in the comments that everyone is finding it easy- it boggled my mind! Especially trying to figure out how the guides lines became the continuous line, I made so many mistakes, mine definitely didn't look like Lex's! But I'm going to keep trying.
Thank you! This was my first ever attempt at geometric patterns and your tutorial was great to follow :)
Thank you so much for the video! Your video tutorials are some of the most helpful on RUclips
Hi. Your videos are really good and I like the fact that it has no music and just your commentary; which I enjoy. This is great video and I really appreciate the time you have taken to help us out! Thanks!
That was awesome! My daughter and I watched it together - she is so pumped on geometry right now. Thank you!
Lex this is great, very helpful. Good to finally hear your voice too :) keep up the awesome work dude!
Thanks man!! More to follow I hope. Thanks for the continued support :)
Finally someone who shows how to do it! Thanks Lex!
This particular star design is iconic in Andalusi architecture. Nice video
Now, imagine carving this for a mosque. I really don't envy the Islamic builders at all!
yeah it requires a lot of craftsmen skills and patient, here in morocco all mosques have zellij, Moroccan plaster crafts and woodcraft watch how Moroccan Zellij is made

They didn't carve this pattern onto the walls of the mosque, rather the pattern was made of alot of small tiles
Moroccan craftsman to be precious
Thank you for this.
I was struggling with where to start and felt a video would be best; you broke it down into very simple steps so I felt confident doing it, really appreciate it. Will you be doing any more? I'd love to see more of your work!

I realize i'm a little late to the party here but,... i just finished this last night and as i was going off to sleep i started to wonder how many times you've already done this pattern to have such an amazing grasp on where all the lines go!?!
So,.. if you're still alive out there and vaguely recollect, i'd love to know!
Also,.. i got Eric Broug's book ' Islamic Geometric Design' - thanks for the tip, its pretty amazing.
Thank you. This was very generous of you. So clear and so well done.
Wow amazing, this is actually used in Moroccan zellij, its used everywhere here in Morocco

You're welcome! : )
thank you so much ! i will try this pattern as soon as possible
Outstanding! Thank you for producing this revised video.
Thank you for the all video
Thank you! So grateful for this!
this is just...beautiful. You have a very steady hand!
Quick question: when you use the compass to create the vertical axis(or rather drawing the crosses to describe the vertical axis), does the compass need to be opened to a certain width? Like double the radius of the original circle?
+E Miers The width just has to be large enough for the arcs to cross. You can't really get too large - the point of intersection will get higher, but it will still be accurate. Just try to estimate a convenient width.
جميل جدا شكرا للاهتمام بالحضارة الإسلامية
This is a world-famous Moroccan ceramic and wood design
Great thing Allah made geometrical art easy
Hi Lex, thanks a lot for this wonderful video
Thank you - really helpful!
Moroccan architecture always wins 😍
Very nicely explained I succeeded
thank you so much! this is so well done and good to understand!
Thanks for this excellent video! I cannot figure out how you choose the lines to keep in the final design. Are there rules you follow to figure out where to start, at which intersections you make an angle, and which intersecting line you keep in the final design? Thanks again.
Thanks Sara! Yes - it has to be the exact intersections shown here - if not, the geometry *may* still connect but the perfect symmetry will be lost. To be honest - this is the most time-consuming stage in the whole process - identifying the right intersections to ink and not under- or over-shooting!
Would you please make more of these videos , very useful and I personally need to practice more n’ more thx
Amazing..trying out today itself...half done
Masha Allah very talented. Fantastic work.
really helpful cheers! you should do a full tutorial on your one of your 3d typography pieces like this
It's islamic geometry ⭐🌙
I appreciate your work. Thank you!
Good work. Thank you for sharing
I DID IT! I WATCHED THE WHOLE VIDEO
Wonderful.
I've been studying an Islamic artefact and wondered how they got the 12 fold symmetry. The construction of the vertical and horizontal guide lines are crucial. I couldn't get any tessalation until I tried this way.
Its look so beautyful 👍

What is the radius of the first circle of this video?
I got all the way to outlining but I got confused and messed it up. I'll have to try this again in the future
