How to draw geometric design - full tutorial

  • This is a full-length tutorial showing the stages in creating a continuous interlacing geometry piece. I learnt this from Eric Broug's wonderful book, 'Islamic Geometric Design' - it's a wealth of knowledge and something I refer to very often when working in this form.
    A few of my subscribers gave me feedback that my previous vid of this technique was too fast - and they were right! I always appreciate the feedback :)
    READING LIST: I can't emphasise enough how rich in information the below resources are - they're all available to buy online from good book sellers:
    'Islamic Geometric Design'
    Eric Broug
    'Islamic Design: A Genius for Geometry'
    Daud Sutton
    'Arabic Geometrical Pattern & Design'
    J. Bourgoin
    'Islamic Designs'
    Eva Wilson
    'Ruler and Compass: Practical Geometric Constructions'
    Andrew Sutton
    'Drawing Geometry: A Primer of Basic Forms for Artists, Designers and Architects'

    Thank You so much for the tutorial and the Reading list, it will be undeniably valuable. I am translating these patterns into embroidery and have been trying to find a tutorial to learn to draw them instead of tracing - which feels like cheating to me! Your tutorial is so clear and easy to follow.

    This is a great tutorial/ design. Thankyou! However, I found it so difficult! I'm surprised to see in the comments that everyone is finding it easy- it boggled my mind! Especially trying to figure out how the guides lines became the continuous line, I made so many mistakes, mine definitely didn't look like Lex's! But I'm going to keep trying.

    this is just...beautiful. You have a very steady hand!
    Quick question: when you use the compass to create the vertical axis(or rather drawing the crosses to describe the vertical axis), does the compass need to be opened to a certain width? Like double the radius of the original circle?

    • @tahreemakif1445
      @tahreemakif1445 8 лет назад

      +E Miers The width just has to be large enough for the arcs to cross. You can't really get too large - the point of intersection will get higher, but it will still be accurate. Just try to estimate a convenient width.

    Thanks for this excellent video! I cannot figure out how you choose the lines to keep in the final design. Are there rules you follow to figure out where to start, at which intersections you make an angle, and which intersecting line you keep in the final design? Thanks again.

    • @LexWilson
      @LexWilson  6 лет назад

      Thanks Sara! Yes - it has to be the exact intersections shown here - if not, the geometry *may* still connect but the perfect symmetry will be lost. To be honest - this is the most time-consuming stage in the whole process - identifying the right intersections to ink and not under- or over-shooting!
