I honestly am glad that Lynne never became a love interest. And while a bit jarring at first, was okay with Sissel being a cat. I however may be biased, as an aromantic I am tired of seeing “the main boy and girl have to pair up at the end” trope. I have also doesn’t the better part of last year playing through persona 5 for the first time, who has a similar “character with amnesia thinks they are human but are actually a cat” storyline so I was already familiar and comfortable with it.

I agree. It's nice to not have them together, especially with the reveal. That said, I thought the reveal was set-up pretty well.

God, yeah. I was shocked that the idea of the main character not having a love interest would be a deal breaker for some people.

Funny coincidence, the split personality thing was gonna be the twist I thought as well. Thought the foreign people had a machine powered by Temsik which could split souls in 2 and he was like the first test subject.

I thought something similar. I thought that it had split his soul in half or something. Like Sissel got all of his good natured traits and none of his memories, and Yominel got all of the memories but only the negative traits, and that’s why he was out for revenge..

I personally don’t see too much of a problem with how death is treated in this game, I can get the tone can be total whiplash, but it never felt odd or out of place to me. It felt pretty clear from the beginning it was gonna be a fun comedy while solving the mysteries of the game. I mean c’mon, it’s by Shu Takumi for crying out loud- Who made a game about solving cold blooded murders and sentencing criminals, with crazy, wacky and colourful characters! What was she expecting?
As for the plot twist involving Sissel being a cat, it never really bothered me and it makes a lot of sense when replaying the game. The writing gripes I can get, and admittedly I did think Lynne and Sissel were gonna be a thing, but the fact they weren’t is really refreshing, and one of the few examples where the main girl isn’t a love interest, and is able to exist without the main man. The assumption that she just *has* to be says a lot about how media has made us believe these things just have to exist in every story/must have a forced romance between two leads of the opposite sex together because they just have to.
And again- the cat part, I’ve seen a lot of contention for this twist, and honestly the more I see the push back against it, I’m inclined to highly disagree. The game loves to play with expectations and I feel that despite it, I don’t think it’s a detriment to it. In fact I quite like the risks the game takes in its story telling and honestly, we need more of and like it. Just from a creative and writing standpoint, I appreciate and love how it goes about its themes and how it portrayals death in this game. It’s not only unique, but also an interesting perspective of using death to understand cause and effect, which is reflected in the game’s story and gameplay- How we(as Sissel) manipulate the environment to help change the future for the betterment of everyone around us as opposed to ourselves, and how the impact of the Temsik meteorite impacted Yomiel’s life, and went on to manipulate and ruin the lives to those he believed deserved it. It’s a story about impact and what that does to a person and to those around em. How one deals with what’s in front of them because of it, and the actions that come after that. The way it’s executed here I feel strengthens these ideas and allows for a unique approach and understanding to be shown, which makes me appreciate how not straightforward it is. I feel like if it did, it just wouldn’t be Ghost Trick anymore, the charm of it would’ve been lost if it followed our expectations, and narrative decisions however absurd that allow for its narrative to happen, I don’t really see that as a bad thing in this case in particular. I think the writing is strong enough that despite the absurdity and odd directions it takes, it is able to make sense of it all despite it. Idk, that’s just my two cents.

Omg! I surprised this topic of off the cuff was ghost trick!
When I first got the game in ds rom I fell in love with this!
The concept of the game was amazing to me since it goes through rewinding time to change the events through subtle changes
And I was personally surprised by sizzle (or in this case cat) is one character that changes everything.
It really goes into how time can be affected by one different change.
Also whaaaat? I did not know about a ship thing 😂
I always just saw it as some guy (who we haven’t known is a cat yet) trying to find out how he dies and also saving the lives of others to uncover the truth

Shipping the Cat with The detective Girl makes Me feel Gross, giving Sissle a Human body? That doesn't Sound too Bad.

I dunno, I think that’s valid but to also offer a different opinion as writer, I think they did a great job. Mostly because i dont think its a serious noire type genre. I thought it was a mystery/comedy type. I don’t think it ever claimed to be a serious noir style of a story from the beginning considering the saturated colours and fun character animations.
Although death is a serious topic, death in the game isn’t taken seriously and I think that might be because the main conflict isn’t about death or dying (though the deaths of certain people are the consequences of the main conflicts).
Yomiel and Jowd’s internal conflicts were about dealing with your mistakes and how you view and react to them. And the main conflict addresses this question, “What do you do when you make a colossal mistake?”
Yomiel decides to reflect blame to everything or anyone else but himself, even a child whom he victimised.
Jowd on the other hand decides to take all the blame himself to the point of self isolation, in which he ends up neglecting his own traumatised daughter (and then traumatises her further by asking to be executed, like dude what?)
Both of the answers these characters came up with, continue to cause damage and pain to the people around them.
And it’s Lynn and Kamila's trauma that are treated with the most seriousness. Why? Because when you make a big mistake, does it affect only you? No. And if that notion is refused, you’re ignoring the other people who will always be and have been affected by what you’ve caused and what you’ve done. Lynne, Kamila, and Fiansissel, are the main ones who come to mind. Lynne, though inspired to do good despite her kidnapping, can never forget the fear she had as a child. Kamila, refusing herself of her hobbies that she believed caused her mom to die, and now costing her father”s life. Fiansissel literally willingly following Yomiel in death.
Those are the serious parts of the game, not the on screen deaths, because death is inconsequential when you can reverse it. But the pain we cause others due to our continued reactions to our mistakes cant be changed unless we confront them honestly.
Like i think the game could be rewrote into a story without the ghost/scifi elements and still hold the same theme because death and dying isnt the cause of the main conflict
    -------------
Personally was really happy that Lynne and Sissel did not end up together in canon because (though i love her) Lynne was taking advantage of the amnesiac without being forthcoming and it didn’t really vibe with me when it comes to developing a romantic interest. And saving her 5 seperate times solidified that bec it started to make their relationship feel like a guardian trying their damndest to keep the main protag alive. And that dynamic was so fun and funny. Its like trying to keep your dog from eating coins. Its a good branch off from the classic damsel in distress. Because she's not a damsel, nor in distress. She's a detective on the case who jumps headfirst into any and all danger. Her luck stat is at 0. And we’re trying to catch our dog as she falls off the bed over and over again. (Which makes me laugh more bc sissel is a cat) My opinion on this is totally biased because i really enjoy friendships and found family (platonic) over romance though.
And I personally loved ghost trick because I could not have guessed anything at all. I also thought it was a split personality at some point and then when it was revealed that it wasn't but instead a cat who was loved by the antagonist??? It was like best friends turned enemies but more painful. Because??? In answering, “whose fault is this?” with “anyone but me,” he killed his only companion of 10 years. Because though it was Lynne”s hands that shot at him, it was Yomiel’s insistence despite Lynne resisting that killed Sissel. It makes me feral. I had to hold my cat for hours to get over it.
Love aus, aus are fun (and as someone who recently got into ghost trick, i'm very excited to check out the refined temsik au) but honestly Sissel has had foreshadowing about his nonhumaness through his dialogue. Comparing himself to the justice minister's wife when she whacks the rat instead of being scared, saying the microscope looks like a giant nail cutter (which it would to a cat), not knowing how to read. Theres probs others i didn't pick up on from my first interaction with the game too. I do wish that they did like a visual foreshadowing too, so that there was a distinct difference between Yomiel, and what Sissel thought he should look like. Idk maybe the tie is red when its sissel bc of the bandana but white when its yomiel.
Anyways i blacked out and suddenly i was at 828 words, i'm so sorry if this came off too strong, your art is amazing-and i was only word vomiting and expressing an opinion you absolutely dont have to agree with

The guy starts off dead and says, "I bet you're wondering how I ended up here..."? 😮 Isn't that the beginning of _Sunset Boulevard_ ?
