  • More at umc.org/videos. Pastor Russ Breshears says churches get lost in the color of the carpet or the style of music at worship and lose sight of what really matters to members. Vital congregations are places with dynamic worship, empowered and inspired lay leadership, and outreach that makes disciples of Christ. At a time when many older churches face closure, Oak Forest United Methodist Church in Little Rock is seeing a renaissance. Retirees run a free medical clinic, vision center, and food pantry. This vibrant outreach has brought new people to the church and reenergized longtime members. Breshears says any church can bring back the spark and he'd like to help, "We want to have those conversations with old churches in transitional communities and say, 'This is a way we have survived and you can, too.'"
